So, now, I'm trying to find the most inexpensive way to load it up with appropriate material for him. I did buy Angry Birds, his favorite, and now a couple of books.

Any body have ideas for appropriate/fun books for the third grade reading level on the Nook?

thanks,
Jodi

Does your public library lend ebooks? I am a librarian, and most libraries here offer ebooks for FREE! Hooray for that!

Awesome that he won the Nook. I thought I did well when I won a Kindle Fire HD for $90 at a United Way benefit auction this month!

I believe all the magic Tree House books are available on the Nook. I know I bought some of them for DS before he outgrew them. I've also bought Flat Stanley books and books written by Dan Gutman on the Nook.

I know you mention books but they have a lot of fun apps geared toward kids. Granted my dd who's also in 3rd grade probably has different intrests, like cake pop making and playing MASH (remember that game? manison, apartment, shack house). I was just looking at my Nook and they have mazes, hidden object, drawing, crafts and a piano and drum set. I just found a kaleidoscope maker for .99 that I might have to get. As for books, we borrow from our local library so as a previous poster mentioned, you may want to check that out.

Congratulations to him! I also recommend checking out what your library has. It's so nice that the libraries have kept up with technology and have ebooks. I hope your son enjoys his Nook.

magic tree house, judy moody, the boxcar children (this one is an older series), the hardy boys (older as well), a to z mysteries...

ugh, DD15 is in 9th grade now, so it's hard for me to remember back that far. i'll post again if i can come up with more.

I would suggest rooting it to make it an android tablet. That's what I did with mine. All it takes is a mini-SD card and the you tube video. There are a lot more free apps on the android market. You can still download the BN app and get books from their store, but you can also get things from other sources such as Kobo. I downloaded Overdrive Media Console and check books out of the library.

The neat thing about the rooting is that because it is on an SD card, when you take the card out, the Nook is back to being a Nook. I have never taken mine out though. I LOVE it being an android.

Here's the video...
