We've had several animals over the years . . .guinea pigs, cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, iguana, turtles, lizards . . .but never a mouse . . .

I can't see getting him a mouse . . .they are cute and all . . .but just like hamsters they will scratch at their cages and they are up all night and I'm sure DS will be asking me to take the creature out of his room . . .

I say NO. I gotta say NO sometimes . . .

The only rodents in this house wear red pants and white gloves! I say, buy him a goldfish and name it "Mickey".

How can you not??????

Okay, we have done hamsters and gerbils and I am not that excited. Several people have since recommended a rat. They are smart and more loving than gerbils. If you don't mind the pet idea, I would suggest this alternative. I know the daycare rat was very tolerant of all those kids and very friendly.

Truly, rats make much better pets than mice. I have owned both and the rats are much more social animals and love being handled. I prefer them to hamsters or gerbils.

I used to have a rat too, and he was great. Whenever he heard our voices when we came into the room, he'd come running out of his little house, to the door of his cage cuz he wanted to come out and play.

A RAT!!

Nooooo that's way too big for him . . . .I think he'd be scared of it.

He saw this cute little brown mouse in a pet store . . .it was all teeny and cute and looking at him (so he says).

I just did some pet Xmas shopping . . .got dog a new woobie (chew toy) and got the cats some toy mice and catnip treats.

Was looking at the mice and they were seperated in 2 categories (regular mice and "fancy" mice) Wonder what made them "fancy" except for their coloring and the $3.00 price difference.

I still have no intentions on buying a mouse . . .regardless.

I agree with those who have recommended a rat instead. If you get a baby (or two - they are very social animals) your son will get used to it before it gets too big. My DD's had two rats (rescued from a man at a pet expo who was going to feed them to his snake), and we found them to be friendly, tolerant, and smart. Our menagerie includes, or included at one time, a dog, five cats, a rabbit, fish, 2 mice, and the rats. With the exception of the dog (an absolutely wonderful Golden Retriever), the rats were the best pets we ever had. The mice had an extremely putrid odor, and weren't particularly friendly. We will never get any again - even youngest DD, the pet lover who wants to be a vet, was not upset when they eventually died. The only problem with rats - they are very susceptible to tumors, which is why we no longer have ours. They lasted about two years before they had to be euthanized due to tumors.

I had a pet mouse as a kid...that thing got loose in the heating system more times then I could count...we alays caught him though...oh and they kinda smell.

I've heard rats are better pets too, but I just can't get past that it's a rat. yuck.

its the tail thing. We have done hampsters and guinea pigs, but I just can't get over the tail thing with rats and mice. ewwwww.
