He will be just fine. DD had her first set of tubes at 9 mos. She had chronic ear infections due to her cleft palate.

Be aware that he may still have ear infections even after the tubes but you will be able to tell almost immediately because the ears start to drain and get him help. Having the tubes will keep him from being in pain if he does have other ear infections and will allow you to get him to the dr sooner for antibiotics. DD had them until she was about 2 and stopped putting her hands and other things in her mouth.

We lucked out with Devyn. She was one ear infection away from them doing it too, but by the magical age of 3, hers stopped alltogether.

I haven't had expereince but just wanted to give a and tell you your DS and family will be in my thoughts.

My dd had her 1st set of tubes put in when she was about 15 months old. The hardest part was handing her over for the actual surgery. I was in tears. We went to the waiting room. DH got me a soda and no lie - I had just taken my first several sips of the drink and out comes her Pediatric ENT - saying she did great and was in recovery.

When we were allowed to go to recovery we heard her before we saw her. She was crying so hard. I believe it wasn't the surgery or the pain, but the coming out of the drugs and not sure who these people were around her. It did take some time to get her calmed down. I wish I would have been better prepared for that part of it.

I am not trying to scare you - just telling you what I wish someone would have told me.

The surgery itself was awesome. We did have to get a second set of tubes at about 4 years old. It has really helped her.

I am sure you will see the difference in your ds. Good luck to your family.

I visited the ENT consultant with my daughter yesterday because of ongoing problems with her ears. She has reduced hearing again and there are concerns at this age because of schooling. She had her first op at 5 years old. Tubes put in(we call them grommits), tonsils out and adenoids out because on ongoing chronic infections since she was a baby.

Her doctor has put her on steroid nasal spray for two months and then he will see her again to make a decision. He doesnt have much hope that the spray will work and will most likely recommend more tubes when we see him in August.

I would say dont worry, but as a mum, I know you will anyway. You are being a good mum and doing the best you can for your child and I am sure he will be absolutely fine. As the others have said, the procedure is very quick and the results and benefits for most children are almost immediate.

My poor DS's have the worst genes!!
My husband and I both had tubes when we were kids, so I wasn't surprised that they needed them, but I am surprised at how not well this is going! My first DS still had 9 ear infections with the tubes in, but at least they were draining. After a year, he had new tubes put in, and he had much better luck the second time. DOC says because he was older(2 at the time).

My second DS has his first set in last September. Now we have been back 5 times in the last three months for shots of antibiotics because his ears are constantly draining and still hurt him. He had a shot two weeks ago, a second shot last Monday, and now his ear is draining again and he's grumpy again.

I guess it's back to the MD for another shot today!!<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_2_6.gif' alt='Sad' border=0></a>
