DS Left the gas stove on....

I had a natural gas detector and a carbon monoxide detector at my old house. I came home from work one day to the gas alarming like crazy and flashing red. I called the gas company, they told me to get out of the house immediately and not to touch any light switches or take anything. Just get out now, they said. They came and they brought the fire department. A gas line had broken under my home, they evacuated my whole street for the night while they dug up my basement and my street to repair it. My neighbors all blamed me for the inconvenience (as if I broke the gas line under the house? wth?!) but lucky we had the gas detector cuz I did not smell the gas that bad, just a little bit and the whole street could have blown up. The gas company said the levels in my home were an emergency.

Wow,wow, wow! I went out and bought a combustible gas detector for the house today. I had a hard time finding one. Maybe it will give me some peace of mind!

Problem with calling the gas company or the fire department is that they don't consider it an emergency. We've done this and waited hours before someone came. We couldn't leave the house until they came, so that meant sitting outside with no dinner waiting with a small child. It was nutso. I tried to call and cancel once we figured out the problem, but they wouldn't let us. It's a shame because it's always made me not want to call unless the house is already on fire!

Wow, I had to call our gas company because I smelled gas & nothing was on. They were at our house in 10-15 minutes. They searched all over & asked a lot if questions until the source was figured out. This was at 7pm on a Saturday nite.

I had a home energy audit done and while they were here they detected a slight gas leak at the meter- when they left I called the gas company and they were there in 10 minutes and had it fixed 5 minutes after that! My friend smelled gas in her house and called the fire department and they were there in 5 minutes- its considered a priority!

the gas companies website was down last night and no one answered the phone.

There must be a 24 hour staffed emergency number to call for your utility. And if you suspect gas, don't go on your computer, don't use your land line. Go outside and call from your cell. The fastest way to get the attention of our utility company around here is to call and say you smell gas.
