Out of nowhere, my son AJ (10yo) started out with a nighttime cough in late December. Docs thought it was asthma so we did nebulizer and a steriod for 5 days. Didn't help. He then thought it was a nasal drip so MD gave promethazine(sp?) for at night which put him to sleep and he did not cough. Since I didn't want him depending on meds and wanted them to figure out what was wrong and not to cover it up, they said he must have a sinus or adnoid infection so, on December 27th, they put him on Ceftin (antibiotic) for 14 days. We finished the Ceftin and he was getting better.
Still with me?
Last Monday school calls and says AJ has a fever of 101.8 and to come and get him. He has had a fever ever since then. I give him Motrin, but as soon as it wears off, the fever is back. The fever has been aroung 100.8F to 103.4F. I took him to the MD on Thursday and they did a Strep test, it came back negative. So I have an appointment to bring him in tomorrow morning (Mon) for blood tests. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY SON?
His symptoms:
-fever
-headache
-stomache ache (hurts more when he moves)
-coated tongue (looks like a baby/thrush)
-not hungry
-chills
The doctor on Friday said she didn't think it was appendicitis because it wasn't hurting that much at that time. I'm thinking it must somehow be related to the antibiotic in December. He has a coated tongue, like baby's have thrush which is a yeast-type infection, so I'm thinking....the antibiotic caused a yeast-type infection in my son. Maybe the infection is now in his abdomin/intestines. I don't know, I'm just trying to play doctor.
I know mono has been in our school and strep, but what else? If you can send my little guy some pixie dust I would appreciate it. I hate to see my buddy sick
.
Thanks, Felicia

QUICK UPDATE:

Last night AJ's stomache hurt terribly, he was in pain. I took him to the ER at 11:30 last night and the doctor on call felt his belly and thought appendicitis. AJ had a CT Scan done at 3:00am and the doctor and surgeon both came in and said the CT scan was negative for appendicitis, he said not 100% though since my son couldn't drink the contrast, and they think it may be a viral bowel infection. SO, right now he is being admitted so they can watch him. He is hooked up to IV and an antibiotic (which I thought was only for bacterial
) and they will watch him for a few days. DH is there with him and I am home to shower and sleep for a bit.
I'll check in when I can. Thanks for sending AJ some get better vibes!
