Out of nowhere, my son AJ (10yo) started out with a nighttime cough in late December. Docs thought it was asthma so we did nebulizer and a steriod for 5 days. Didn't help. He then thought it was a nasal drip so MD gave promethazine(sp?) for at night which put him to sleep and he did not cough. Since I didn't want him depending on meds and wanted them to figure out what was wrong and not to cover it up, they said he must have a sinus or adnoid infection so, on December 27th, they put him on Ceftin (antibiotic) for 14 days. We finished the Ceftin and he was getting better.

Still with me?

Last Monday school calls and says AJ has a fever of 101.8 and to come and get him. He has had a fever ever since then. I give him Motrin, but as soon as it wears off, the fever is back. The fever has been aroung 100.8F to 103.4F. I took him to the MD on Thursday and they did a Strep test, it came back negative. So I have an appointment to bring him in tomorrow morning (Mon) for blood tests. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY SON?

His symptoms:
-fever
-headache
-stomache ache (hurts more when he moves)
-coated tongue (looks like a baby/thrush)
-not hungry
-chills

The doctor on Friday said she didn't think it was appendicitis because it wasn't hurting that much at that time. I'm thinking it must somehow be related to the antibiotic in December. He has a coated tongue, like baby's have thrush which is a yeast-type infection, so I'm thinking....the antibiotic caused a yeast-type infection in my son. Maybe the infection is now in his abdomin/intestines. I don't know, I'm just trying to play doctor.

I know mono has been in our school and strep, but what else? If you can send my little guy some pixie dust I would appreciate it. I hate to see my buddy sick :(.

Thanks, Felicia

QUICK UPDATE:
*****************************
Last night AJ's stomache hurt terribly, he was in pain. I took him to the ER at 11:30 last night and the doctor on call felt his belly and thought appendicitis. AJ had a CT Scan done at 3:00am and the doctor and surgeon both came in and said the CT scan was negative for appendicitis, he said not 100% though since my son couldn't drink the contrast, and they think it may be a viral bowel infection. SO, right now he is being admitted so they can watch him. He is hooked up to IV and an antibiotic (which I thought was only for bacterial  ) and they will watch him for a few days. DH is there with him and I am home to shower and sleep for a bit.

I'll check in when I can. Thanks for sending AJ some get better vibes!

I sure have no ideas, Felicia, but a prayer with AJ for wellness. Hoping he is better soon.

And my prayers remain with you and your mom also, hope you both are well.

she ran a fever for 10 days. My guess would be something like that, especially if it is going around school. Mono (or epstein barr) can metamorphasize in different ways, and also make you vulnerable to other things. When my daughter had a blood test for mono, called a mono spot or something, it actually came back negative. But my pediatrician was still suspicious, so he sent her blood to Cal. for an epstein-barr panel, which was positive. Best of luck, I hope your son feels better very soon!

prayed for AJ, Im sure he will be alirght :D

It does sound like the antibiotics may have caused a yeast infection. It does happen. I hope he's better real soon.

Just prayed for AJ. It's harder on us parents when they're sick than it is on us when we're sick.

I hope the dr can find out what's going on.

Get a Monospot!! Very quick blood test that will confirm Mono. If its mono no antibiotics are needed(and can actually cause a rash) Thrush is easily taken care of with Diflucan(oral antifungal) or a "swish and swallow" antifungal.

good Luck

In you md's defense Mono can be tough to call since its symptoms mimic alot of other diseases.

Many prayers for your ds!!

May the dr's figure out what is wrong and help him to feel better quickly!

Sending your DS PD, and hope he feels better soon.

I'm hoping AJ feels better soon. No doctor advice. So many sick, sick kids this year.

Prayers and pixie dust for AJ. Please keep us updated. The poor little guy.

Felicia, my son was very sick last summer. It turned out to be a urinary tract and kidney infection. It was a very rare type of bacteria for a child to have. If they have not done a urine culture ask them to do one.

Awww poor little guy! :( I hope they find out what's wrong and he's feeling better ASAP! It's so hard when our little ones are sick.

One of the main symptoms of mono is a terrible sore throat and swollen glands. If he doesn't have these I wouldn't think it was mono.

 I hope you find out soon and that he's home quickly.

Aw, poor fella (and poor mom & pop, too!!). Hope he is better real soon!!!

A few years ago my oldest son (at the time he was 7) had similar symptoms, very high fevers (no thrush though) and the poor thing was so sick. They strep tested him, mono tested, did blood cultures, etc.

They never did figure out what it was that he had (it lasted almost 2 weeks.)

His pediatrician said that every now and then there is a viral infection that some kids get that makes them sicker than dogs that they can't really diagnose. It's "viral" and has to run it's course.

Hope AJ is feeling better soon!

I am sorry he's in the hospital, but hope that now they'll be able to find out what's wrong. Prayers and pd being sent. Keep us posted, k?

Felicia, I just now swa this. I hope that they will be able to find out what is wrong with him. I pray that he recovers quickly

I've said a prayer for your little one. I hope the doctors can figure out whats wrong quickly and have him on the road to recovery. Sending tons of PD to you too.

I'm so sorry! I just prayed for AJ (and his worried parents!).
Let us know when he's feeling better--I hope it'll be very soon.

Janet
