My ds10 is a chronic hand washer. He washes constantly, over and over again. If he gets the mail from the box he washes, if he combs his hair he washes, you get the picture. Its a good thing and Im glad he does it, but now his hands are getting really chaffed from the cold. I didn't have any lotion at all in teh house last night so I put some triple A ointment on them and today they are not hurting but still really chaffed. So, whats the best type of lotion or cream to heal these up?

I don't know that the OCD hand washing is a good thing but I would get something like Nivea or Eucerin if he has a major problem. You could put Vaseline on at night and cover them with cotton gloves too.

I would also try the vaseline & cover his hands at night. During the day try Eucerin, Cetaphil or a lotion that contains glycerin.

The glycerin based lotion I use is fantastic, but he probably doesn't want to smell like a cookie or a mango!!!

Instead of Vaseline use A&D Ointment.:thumbsup2 I slather it on at night and then put socks on my hands to go to sleep.

As far as the OCD part, that is not so good for him. :guilty: I can't imagine living with that type of disorder.

Thanks I will check out some lotions and stuff today and see what I can find with the glycerin in it or maybe the vaseline. I dont know if he will be able to stand having something that greasy on them all night.

As far as the ocd goes its really not that ocd I guess, he just seems to wash them a lot. Maybe im over reacting. If it is ocd then its the only thing he's ocd about, lol. He just doesn't like dirty hands. ;)

Use the A&D ointment. I am an excema sufferer for 30+yrs and this is the one thing that will help.

Yes it is gross at night but when your hands start to crack and bleed it will be very painful.

Once your hands start splitting open you will need to get steriod cream to help with the healing.

You know whats funny, I overheard a cashier at the food store a few weeks ago telling someone to use that for pimples. She said she used it all the time for that and it worked like a charm. I told dd I was going to get her some to try but she didn't want to because it was a "diaper rash" cream.

Get some udder cream. Esp if your hands are really bad. I believe you can now get it at wal-mart. Dairymen use it --yes on cows udders to prevent chafing after milking. It works really well.

http://www.amazon.com/AHAVA-Dermud-...sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1228829311&sr=1-4

It's not greasy, absorbs quickly, and though it's expensive you just need a little bit. I use Body Shop's Hemp Hand Protector when my hands just need moisturizing. Ahava's Dermud is something I use when my skin's really bad.

I do think if your son is washing his hands so often that they're chafed, there's possibly an issue there. If you really don't think there is, encourage him to put lotion on his hands after he washes.

My father has always had an issue with chapped hands and his doctor recommended udder cream. It's inexpensive, and you can get it at Walmart, I believe in the pet section, if not with the other lotions.

I don't mean to harp on the hand washing, but if I were you, I'd bring it up to his doctor. It might not be full-blown OCD, but constant hand washing is certainly obsessive, and not normal for 10-year old boys, especially to the point of chapping.

Mary Kay has something called Extra Emollient Night Cream and it's the very best thing for extremely dry skin. You can even use it on chapped lips. :thumbsup2

Try Glysomed hand cream. My daughter gets wintertime excema flair ups, mostly on the backs of her hands....this is one on the only creams that works. It is only a few dollars, and easy to find. Whatever you get, be sure it has no fragrance...it tends to cause a 'burning' sensation, and in some cases, will cause the problem to worsen.

I have this problem as well- I have been thru so many creams! The one that works the best for me is the burt's bees almond milk beeswax hand creme. If I am close to running out it stresses me! LOL really great!

Tell her we use it for chapped lips too...:rotfl: It is a quicker healer and relief to no end.

Creams and lotions don't work for me anymore, I have tried them all. My hands are just too chapped for them.

Burt's Bees works for my daughter (9), an obsessive handwasher in the winter only. As soon as her hands feel dry she washes them. She thinks the water is good for them. I've told her that while the water running over may feel soothing at the time, she's making her problem worse. She doesn't seem to get it though.

Oh yea...the kids are after me with that because when your hands itch non-stop "burning them" with hot water feels so good.
I also love hot showers.

All of this is very bad of course, and I have to try and keep the water on warm and not hot. I use rubber gloves for cleaning and food gloves.

Interestingly if you do have cracked hands that are bleeding you should not handle raw meat without gloves. So just passing this along as an fyi.
