I am so proud. DS, has been chosen as senior to recieved scholarship monies enabling him to go to WDW to lead the band.

He will get the lead the band down Main Street in the Electric Parade. He has been a few times and will also serve as tour guided for freshman (and his girl friend, who has never been). They will also be going to Universal.

Time to start some budget planning. He can really stretch his money for food. Like he said, he is going to lead band and ride the rides....his main goal is not to have fancy meals.

So excited.

Awesome. That is a very active marching band from your kids school. There must be a lot of fundraising going on. Last year they went to New York City, Orlando this year. What high school is this and what dates are they going to be in Orlando? I'm sure there will be some Dis folks there and they can cheer the band on.

That is so cool! When does he get he to go? How long do you have to save?

That's great! An honor for a lifetime. I was in the regular parade at Disneyland when in HS. It's a really neat experience.

Congrats! Next year we'll have 2 in the band marching down Main Street. I can't wait to cheer them on.

My cousin's son is in their HS bad's Wind ensemble and 60 of them are playing at Carnegie Hall at Easter weekend

Trip cost $2k PER kid, and altho they did do some fundraising, the parents payed the majority of it
And the whole family is going -6 of them! They lucked out in getting a 2 BR condo from his corporate headquarters for a very good price for the weekend.

$2k???? Ouch! Last year's Disney trip for my son's marching band was only $590 per kid and I thought that was expensive.

Congrats to your son.

Are you asking for assitance on ways to save money on the food budget? Your post is not exactly clear.

My daughter marched twice.

Heads up for your son, they really are not right before the parade they are by themselves about 30-45 minutes prior. They also sometimes march the opposite route of the parade. Just a few things to think about.

On our trips, we didn't have scholarships, but I would definitely make sure he budgets for the costs not included. Our trips only included a few group meals. The rest was on the parents.

We would always make few copies of different types of eating places off allears and give copies to the parents. They at least had an idea of how much to send.

As for being a guide, does he have to do this? Most of our Freshman went out as a group of 4 friends and just picked up a map. They would have been upset if they had to have an upperclassmen with them. Maybe he could group with his girlfriend and few students in his actual class, they will have a lot more fun, and I promise, what Freshman want is not the same as upperclass wants.

Congrats all the way!! It is a great time. I know during the day Photopass takes pictures and you can view them at the Photoshop. If they take them, he could go look and since he is at the beginning of the parade without an instrument there may be some good pictures of him (depends if you have a color guard who will overshadow him or not). The picture makes a great souvenier (sp).

Back to the food situation, most of our students all ate CS. They don't want to take the time for TS. It saves money and time.

In 1988, my senior year of HS my HS wind ensemble went to Russia and areas around there for spring break. We raised the money so it only cost each child about $250 to go. But my dad went along as a chaperone and it cost him around $2000. And think of how long ago that was! The trip was once in a lifetime and so worth the hard work, though.

When my daughters school marched, they marched before the 3pm parade usually around 2:30-2:45. I have never seen nor heard of a school marching at night before the electrical parade.

They were also given vouchers for food. But her school did the magical music days. I thought they had to do that in order to march. She marched in both WDW and DL.

I saw this happen when I was there at the beginning of December. First time I had seen it.

We marched just before the evening parade when I was in HS. No band technically marches IN the parade.

That makes sense.

It sounds like fun. How did they choose who gets a Scholarship? Did he have to audition or is it just grades?

They are going to Washington DC and NYC and seeing a Broadway play also
