What are your views on them?

Most of my friends drink and/or smoke pot, and some of them are smokers. I really have a neutral stance on things like that -- It's not hurting anyone as long as you're not out driving. And I don't buy into the whole "weed is a gateway drug" thing because the people I know who smoke weed have never gone on to any hard drugs. And I think that America should lower it's drinking age to at least 18.

Things like heroin, meth, coke, etc., I would could never be friends with someone who was addicted to those. Addictions like that, IMO, are disgusting and they hurt everyone around them.

Me.. I'm just a caffiene addict. *twitch*

Illegal drugs, TOTALLY against them. They're illegal for a reason.

Underage drinking same as above.

Smoking and drugs are disgusting. I know a lot of kids at school who come to class (when they actually come) stoned and they always look awful.

Drugs destroy the mind in so many ways; I don't get why people think it's fun to take them.

I'm not into drugs. Pot is okay I think, as long as you don't smoke and drive or smoke right before you go to work or school. It's been proven to be no worse than alcohol. Plus, it would stimulate the economy if they tax it. They could make MILLIONS of dollars by taxing it, nevermind reducing the chances of tainted pot because of the black market. It's a win-win scenario. The smokers get to enjoy their pot and the government gets to make money AND keep people safe.

I also think the drinking limit is ridiculous. If I can drive, get married, enter the military, go to college, build a family, and buy cigarettes, then why in the hell can't I drink alcohol?

It wouldn't really be bad to have pot legal. I just don't want to smell it and breathe it while I'm out and other people are puffing away. Smoking is illegal in public places here anyway but people still smoke on the street and around campus at my school. They would do the same thing with pot.

When you're high, whether it be from pain-killers, pot, alcohol, whatever, you just feel good. You're not cranky, you're not uptight, you can let loose and do whatever the hell you want as long as it's legal. Haha. I'm not supporting illicit drug use, but I understand the satisfaction of "feeling good". It's like that feeling you get after exercising when your body's released endorphins.

the other day in psychology, a girl sitting in the front row of a 600 seat lecture hall (right in front of me) was drinking alcohol out of a water bottle. the whole section smelled like it. i just don't understand why they COME TO CLASS and keep drinking. :confused3

The could use the same laws in place for cigarettes. How they enforce the rules is totally up to the state. I know they crack down HARD for anyone smoking in certain establishments in PA.

If I don't want to smell the smoke, I'll do my best to avoid it. People shouldn't have to be worried about me, I'm a big girl and I can take care of myself. If people want to ruin their health by smoking, that's their choice. If there's secondhand smoke, I'll do my best to avoid it.
Sorry, I kind of went off on a tangent there. It annoys me when people complain "ah bah wah I got sick because of secondhand smoke". Unless you're a child, you should have the common sense and will power to get away from the smoke cause you know it's bad.

the other day a classmate of mine came to school a bit loopy. i was told he had taken a pill....i assume it was illegal.his friends said he took and illegal pill. he was acting very weird. it got to the point that in homeroom when someone began playing music he began to take his close off.....we stopped him when he reached for his boxers. he was acting like an idiot and we were all making fun of him. He has been delt with by the principal already but i just dont understnad why he would want to endure the ridicule. some people just dont have common sense. like my geography teacher once said "if common sense is so common, then why don't more people have it?".

actually (gotta play devils advocate, i've had too many brain anatomy lectures) marijuana stays in the system longer than alcohol. (up to 48 hours after 1 use, the brain has not recovered from it and still exhibits symptoms of being "high" even though the user may no longer feel the "high")

and marijuana is also a teratogen.

if legalized, we would need a "field test" for police to preform to determine "public intoxication"

i'm completely for the legalization of marijuana, but its not fair to say that its not harmful to the body. if the laws concerning it were similar to drinking and smoking, i would have no problems with it.

a marijuana bar just opened in portland oregon, if i'm not mistaken.

I'm straight edge. I never have and never will drink, smoke, take drugs, or act in a promiscuous manner. It's not who I am.

I do personally think that people who choose do so are a little stupid. OK, a lot stupid. Drinking in moderation is the only thing I'm remotely OK with. I mean one drink a week or something like that. I don't mean as many drinks as you can handle in a night. Illegal drugs of any kind and the abuse of perscription drugs is the stupidest thing I can think of to do. If you do it, I don't hang around with you. Doing pot is the second most dumb thing you could do, IMHO. I knew so many people who did it in high school and they're going nowhere. All of them have ended up free loading or doing something they regret (one got pregnant and then lost the baby because of her continuous partying, sunk into a depression, almost killed herself, and is now living-- barely legally-- with a man 12 years her senior [she's 18, he's 30 next month]. She dropped out of school, has no job, and abuses her body still. Last I heard she was on meth). Smoking is basically killing yourself slowly.

I'm not friends with people who do things like this. I think they're really stupid. Needless to say, I wouldn't get along with your pot-smoking friends. They disgust me and I haven't even met them.

As for the drinking age, I think it should stay where it is. I also think that the age to buy tobacco and to serve in the military should be raised to 21. Studies have shown that the human brain doesn't fully develop until about then. In my opinion, it shouldn't be "I'm old enough to fight for my country, I'm old enough to drink", it should be "I'm not old enough to fight for my country until I'm old enough to drink". I know, it's the temptation that makes kids want to do it, but whatever. It just proves some kids aren't smart enough to make decisions for themselves. Penalties for under-age drinking should be stricter. It shouldn't be a night in jail or a call to your parents, it should be a court date and counseling (it might be in some states, it isn't in NH on a first offense I believe). Drinking's dumb.

And, like my flair on facebook says, "Drugs are for sluts and losers".

actually, the brain doesn't finish developing until a little after your 24th birthday.

The problem is, even though there's laws here, too to prevent public smoking, it's still there. It's a ***** on campus. You're not allowed to smoke within 20ft of a building, but people do it and they always stand right in front of the doors. I have no choice but to walk through their smoke. I can either walk through it or not go to class and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $24,000 a year and not go to class.

It still sucks. I can smell it still and it reeks to me. I know full well the effects of second hand smoke. I've got minor asthma because both of my parents smoked while I was a kid. I know that you don't have to be a kid to have no choice in the matter. Because until a few years ago it was completely legal to smoke in restaurants here. And I don't care if there's a partition or a separate room for smoking, you can still smell it. Smoke travels.

Legalizing all sorts of drugs would make the government trillions. We could pay off our debt if we legalized heroin and charged street prices for it. That doesn't make it right.

Taxes should be higher on alcohol and cigarettes. It may sound callous, but if somebody would rather slowly kill themself than eat, so be it.

I did say "about". ;)

well there's "about" a 3 year difference of smoking, drinking, driving, and joining the army and dying between 21 and 24. if you want the brain to be developed before you allow those things, "about" doesn't work. your brain is "about developed at 18 and 16 by that logic. :confused3

So I say raise it. Raise the drinking age, enlistment age, everything, to 24.
