Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson
may have known years ago about the deadly
risks of its birth control patch Ortho Evra,
according to internal documents obtained by
NBC News.

There are a lot of risks to any hormonal birth control. Some are fairly well known (clots), others are just coming to light , 40+ years after the pill was invented (environmental impact).

I suspect we'll hear more and more problems.

It is sad but I do remember my OBGYN discussing all the risks of the various pills, rings and patches - they all come with a risk of blood clot, stroke, etc. I know you are also not supposed to smoke while on these or else your risk is much, much elevated.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was on this for almost a year when it first came out. I got sooo sick from it. Everyone thought I was crazy. Nice to see I wasnt. That patch was evil.

Agreed. This is all on the sheets of info given with the drugs. It certainly was for the few months I was on OrthoTriCyclen over 10 years ago.

Now maybe they have a *higher* risk than originally thought...but it's ALL a risk that's been known (go figure, taking fake extrinsic hormones might mess with your body's endocrine system and other systems...) since pretty much when the first pill came out...

Still sad, but not a surprise that those risks exist.

I think its outrageous that we can put machines in space, men can walk on the moon, thousands of pound air planes fly through the air, and people are living longer than ever, but we can't come up with a safe, effective method of birth control in 2010.

The things you mentioned are not done without risk. I also don't believe we will ever be able to take any manufactured medication without risk, even in the future.
