Driving with 2 kids

For the heck of it, I just went to mapquest and put in my address, and the address to Pop Century.

Said it will take 16 hours, the total milage is 1072, and cost $600 in gas. Um.... Huh?!?! I don't know where they are getting that figure from, but thats just crazy! If I have to gas up ever 350 miles, that means I will have to do it about 3 times. I have a minivan, so its about $55-$60 per fill up. That means, the most it could be is $180 and $360 round trip.
Seeing that plane tickets for the 3 of us was just under a grand both ways, this is a nice savings. Even with their crazy math! LOL

You still need to factor in wear and tear on your car. And for us, there is no way we would drive 16 hours without a sleep stop. Plus I put a value on actually being on vacation in the parks compared to being on vacation, driving.

The amount they gave did not factor in hotel stops or personal views on what a vacation should be. ;)

And I just want to add - We enjoy the drive! We don't look at it as "time wasted getting to our destination" rather than the trip as being part of the vacation! Obviously not for everyone, but don't knock it!

For us driving was about $500 round trip with gas (my Accord does great on gas) and food. This is a significant savings on plane tickets that range around 950-1200 for our family. I haven't found $200 Orlando tickets in a long long time.

We pack sandwiches and stuff because eating 3 heavy meals and sitting in a car will kill our stomachs. :scared1:

We don't stop overnight. We drive early morning to night.

It worked for us in the past because we always stayed two extra days before WDW and two days after WDW visiting family in Orlando. So we were well rested before getting to WDW and well rested before our drive home. My XH loved to drive long distances. I drove maybe one hour each way.

My kids bicker A LOT now. 14 and 8. Next trip I am 99% sure I'm flying because listening to them whine and complain with the whole "he's touching me" "she's looking at me" "he's on my side" "she's breathing too loud" for 16 hours will just irk my soul and I don't want any loss of life before we get there.

And since I'm not with XH I won't be visiting family since they were his family. :sad1: So we will fly and use ME for the first time.

Wow excuse me for offering my thoughts. I thought that was what we were here for. The OP didn't just ask for a dollar by dollar break down.

You still do need to factor wear and tear in. That is a fact.

Oh goodness, it was meant jokingly :faint:
