We are thinking about driving down next year. We would leave on a Friday morning drive about 10-12 hour depending on how it is going. I am researching hotels along the way. Do none of the hotels along I-95 have bedrooms that will sleep a family of 5? All I can find is that I will have to get 2 rooms.

Many hotel chains have rooms with 2 queen beds which would sleep 4 and then allow you to reserve a rollaway bed for an extra charge for the 5th person. Try the Holiday Inn chain. Some hotels only have 2 double beds but many will have rooms with 2 queens. Also, Residence Inn has larger rooms to sleep larger parties.

We live outside of Philly, and were going to try to make it to Savannah (about 12hrs), with a family of 5. We were able to find a Springhill Suites (marriott) there that will sleep 5 in one room - 2 doubles and a sleeper sofa. We stayed at one twice last year, and liked the rooms. Their prices are not low, (100ish) but reasonable, and there is free breakfast. Not sure where you are in Jersey ( unless you aren't and are just a Devils fan!) but hopefully this info is close to what you need. Have a great trip.

I've had this problem before too. Try just calling the hotels instead of using something like Expedia or Priceline to find a room. The online searches don't usually allow for more than 4 people, but the hotel itself might allow it. You just need to call them to find out... Good luck! We are leaving Thurs. to drive down as well!!! First time driving, we always fly, but we are taking 2 1/2 weeks so it will be fun!! :goodvibes

I live near Lancaster Pa. Google maps said it will be about a 15-16 hour drive. There is two ways we can go, we can go the turnpike to I-81,I-77,I-95 or all the way down I-95. We are also planning to make it to Savannah before we rest for the night.

Will I need to make a reservation for a hotel or do they allow walk-ins?

We are planning to do the 81 route, as we will be traveling on a weekday, and wish to avoid rush hour along I95. Our "fall back" plan is Colombia SC. I plan to have reservations, as with 3 kids under 10...they get very cranky and need to stretch out. I would think you would do well with the same route, and your kids are a little older than mine, you may not have to make as many stops! We have a potty- trainer currently. We also have never driven, and have been thinking about this a good deal. Check out the 2000+ thread, there are a lot of good tips there.

Your question doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Your initial question expresses concern with the ability to find a hotel room to sleep 5 people yet now you're asking if you can just show up without a reservation.

Well sure you can show up without a reservation but how are you going to find a hotel room to sleep 5 when when it's not pre-planned? I would also warn you that front desk people will smell your desperation and quote you the highest price (rack rate) when you show up that way. You could also show up in an area where rooms are all sold out.

PS-I would go the I-81 route too as there is a lot less traffic and it's more scenic too. Please note that I-77 ends at Columbia and you need I-26 to get from there to I-95 for the remainder of your journey.
