Driving to San Diego

We arrive at LAX on a Friday at 1:09 pm. By the time we get our luggage and rental car, how long should it take us to drive to San Diego (Shelter Island area)? Will we hit the start of rush hour traffic? Thanks.

I think you'll be just ahead of the rush hour. All you need to do is get on the 405 south and go all the way down. It turns into the 5, and will take you about 2 - 2.5 hours to get to San Diego. So, figure 3:30-4pm.
