In a couple of weeks, my wife & I will be driving for the first time to OKW (always flew). Any experiences (positive or negative) on driving from upstate NY down to "home". Thanks

Depends on how long you are taking to get there. I have driven down 2 times to Florida. Once it was straight thru both ways. Once took a couple days there and straight thru back. The scenery is nice but myself I will never drive again unless I am taking at least 2 -3 days each way. Make stops check out other things, just enjoy the U.S. never will I drive to a place farther than 8-10 hrs. I will fly. If you drive straight thru your first day there you loose just to rest. I have driven other places also that have taken anywhere between 10 - 17 hrs. It has become wasted time to me. Would rather fly and spend extra time at destination than in a vehicle.

One area that is excellent to view is Virginia Mountains. Make sure you are in daylight at least one direction. How long are you taking to dive?

I would love to drive to Florida as long as I had enough time to really enjoy the drive, and wasn't doing a straight through kind of thing. I like making the journey part of the trip.

We now live in NC but are originally from Buffalo. We've driven down to FL three times since moving here and it can be a long drive even from here. We've also driven home (NY) a few times and I can't imagine adding those trips together. But some people are better road-trippers than I am :) :hyper:

From here, we pick up I95 in SC and it's a really straight drive. I find the driving tips from this site invaluable. It helps us to know what restaurants/service stations are coming up and to judge how much further we have to go.

Hope this helps! Have a hot dog from Ted's for me! :p

Hi Walter-
We drive every year to WDW from Southampton, NY (about 2 hours East of NYC) We leave at about 5 am and drive until Santee, SC (about 11 - 12 hours) (The Hampton Inn is brand new and clean and includes breakfast for about $65 per night) The next morning we try to get on the road again by 8 am and we usually check into OKW by 1 pm; get a cocktail and hang by the pool until our room is ready! We have 3 kids and have a DVD player with headphones in the Suburban so the drive is actually quite nice. Here is a link to a great I-95 website with lots of great info.http://www.usastar.com/i95/homepage.htm
please let me know if I can answer any questions for you!

Hello to my fellow upstate NY-ers!!

I would not recommend driving from here to Florida under most conditions. However, if you make the drive a part of your vacation (take a few days, stop at Gettysburg, etc.), it might not be that bad. I am NOT a fan of motor vehicles, under any circumstances, so my opinion may be a bit biased. Good luck, though, and enjoy your trip! :sunny:
