We are scheduled to fly on Jet Blue from Logan in 3 weeks. We have someone to drive and drop us off at Logan. With all the problems and closures resulting from the Big Dig disaster, will we even be able to get there? We will be coming north from Providence. Normally it would take us an hour. How much time should I add to this now? We are flying on a Saturday morning, returning on a Sat late afternoon.

Thanks for your help

You just never know with Boston traffic but I would give myself an extra hour.Better to be early than late.

Keep in mind -- You don't know what is going to be closed next.

I would say that at least one whole extra hour is a good bet.

I had to fly out of Logan on Wednesday and fly out again in about 5.5 hours. The traffic in Boston is real light due to summer vacations and the backups are sporadic at best. I would suggest you not come from the west on the MA Pike unless you check real-time traffic first (try http://www.thebostonchannel.com and click on traffic or tune to 1030 AM for traffic on the 3's). The detour from the west puts you on the central artery/93 north and then makes you loop around on surface roads near Haymarket to get to the Callahan tunnel. Many more savvy drivers get off at Allston/Brighton tolls and take Storrow Drive to 93S and the Callahan exit. As of right now, there is no Ted Williams eastbound traffic except Silver Line buses. No matter which way you go, you'll be taking the Callahan tunnel. 93N from Braintree gets you there without the drama and detours of I-90E and would be my recommendation given you're coming from Providence. Returning you can take the Sumner or the Ted Williams, but remember that the Sumner does not have a direct link to 93S. If the governor is to be believed, the 93N exit to the Ted Williams tunnel east will be open by next week and the westbound Ted Williams link to 93N and 93S the week after. Best of luck!!

We have a friend who drives from central Ma to Logan every day....according to him, there is no set time that is best. He has left his house at the same time in the morning, around 5ish, and it has taken him 50 minutes, it has taken him 2 hours...no one can figure out how the traffic is going to be on any given day. I would allow at least an etra hour for travel. Better to be wandering around Logan, grabbing a bite to eat for 2 1/2 hrs, than to be sitting in a traffic snarl as your flight boards!
Best of luck....here's hoping they get some roadways open to Logan soon.

Personally--since you are flying during the daytime, I would have your friend who is driving you, bring you to the Harbor Express in Quincy, and take the boat over. It's about a 35 minute boat ride across the harbor, and then you shuttle bus to your terminal. This would avoid ALL the Boston traffic, and all the current big dig hassle.

Here's the link to the Quincy/Logan schedule pages.

I don't work for them or anything, we've used this service numerous times in the past, and have always had great service. Plus it helps with the 'I'm on vacation' feeling!!!!!

I agree, I would probably add an extra hour onto your original plan. You may get there early but that would be a much better option than cutting it too close. As far as the traffic, you just never know. I commute into Boston 3X a week, all different times of day, and some days the traffic is horrible, others I sail right through. I love the idea about taking the boat over, sounds much more relaxing. Good luck!

Thanks for all the great info everyone. Debbie, I will definitely check out your suggestion as well!

What about the silver line -- I think that's the T that goes directly to the airport.

Silver Line are busses, that also have to travel the roads, and some of the potentially closed tunnels. Everything may be settled down by then, but at the rate they're going, who knows?

I hear the traffic's horrendous. It's MUCH easier to fly out of Providence. No traffic problems, easy to park at, easiest to come and go from. I will never fly out of Boston again..... but good luck!!! By the sounds of it, allow 2 extra hours. Better safe than sorry.... pixiedust:

Kelly, I still don't get that if your coming from ANYWHERE north of Boston? I forget where your parents are, but leaving from Salisbury the absolute most direct route is 95 south to Route 1; about seven or eight miles south to Route 60 East to 1A, and follow the signs to the airport.

The Callahan (and Sumner, same tunnel heading into Boston instead of out) was NOT constructed by the same twits that did the Big Dig. It's safe.
