Driving School or Home Training?

DD just got her permit last Thursday . . .(watch out CT drivers) :rotfl2: and I have taken her out on the "open road" all weekend . . .prior to that I started her last summer in parking lots, etc . . .she does do fairly well but there are some other things (parking, 3 point turn, parallel parking) that she still needs to do.

With driving school she'll have to wait 4 months until taking the driver's test and with me teaching her she has to wait 6 months. Personally I think that new drivers should have to wait 6 months anyways.

Is it better to send her to driving school or just to teach her myself? What discounts do insurance companies give if they go to driving school and is it really worth it?

Any advice from both experiences?

Thanks.

The law must be different in your state, but in MN if they are under 18 they have to take their behind the wheel through a certified program or they can't get their license. If they are over 18 they just need to pass the written test and the driving test at the drivers license station. We couldn't just teach them at home.

I grew up/got my license in Mass.
We got a discount on our insurance if we went through driving school.

I didn't know it was an "option" in CT (where in CT will she be driving? hehe) but I would reccommend her going through driving training.

In Pennsylvania, they have to wait 6 months to take their test, period. There is no requirement to have a certified driving school teach them, but parents do have to certify that they have supervised at least 50 hours of driving time.

DS actually had in-the-car training through his school. They contract with a local driver training company and the school district pays half of the $220 fee. To be honest, he took the in-the-car training just for the insurance discount because he had already passed his driver's test by then and had his license. We figured the discount on car insurance would cover our $110 of the training fee within 2 years.

Send her to driving school.

My opinion is that with home teaching not only does it test your nerves but she may pick up either bad habits (not to say you have them) or not all the skills she needs. At driving school they won't pass her until she can drive with some confidence and appropriate skill. They will also prep her for the vehicle test. Once she has her license then you can go out with her and build upon what she has learned.

My driving school days were long ago but what I do remember is that the second brake on the teachers side came in very handy several times. I'd hate to think what may have happened if it wasn't there. My teacher had nerves of steel with some students.
