Hi,
I have driven many times in the USA but I thought I'd check opinions on this:
As a general rule it's ok to turn right on a red light unless there is a sign stating not. So with introduction of red light cameras at many intersections can you still turn on red?

Mick

keep in mind that the right turn on red is only after you have come to a stop to determine that there is no traffic coming.
If there is traffic, you cannot turn right on red until the traffic has cleared.
In other words, when you are turning right on red you do NOT have the right of way.
When it is clear only then can you make the right turn.

And of course, if there's a sign saying no turn on red, then you can't.

(right turn on red is the general rule all across the US - with variations on what prohibits it).

I understand it is only permitted if there is no sign to the contrary and only if there is no traffic. But my point is if there is camera detecting red jumpers will it detect legitimate right turns?

a legitimate right turn has nothing to do with people running red lights.
However, if you turn right where it's prohibited, the camera will see it.

but the signs are very clear - just watch for them.

also, don't assume that just because the person in front of you has turned on the red, that there isn't a sign.
I've been behind a lot of cars that have turned right on red despite a sign. You have to look for the sign for yourself to make sure whether you can or can't turn. Don't depend on the car in front of you.

before anyone gets too positive about right turn, have a look at this article.

http://www.bradenton.com/2014/04/17/5106320/a-fuzzy-florida-law-on-rolling.html

it's from the city of Bradenton, but it can be applied to Florida as a whole.

Red light traffic cameras might pick you up for a red turn even where authorised, the law enforcement agency will determine if the turn was legitimate or not

have a look at this article from Osceola County (US192, Kissimmee area) where right turns on red have been ticketed (even though reimbursed)

if you want to know where the cameras are http://www.photoenforced.com
right turn cameras are also noted

That's a bit worrying isn't it. Particularly when you have drivers behind you beeping at you to turn!

you must come to a complete stop before you make that right turn.
That's the law. The first article is about "rolling turns".
A stop is a stop.
The same is true at a stop sign. You must come to a complete stop.
Do not "roll" through your stop.
You may get a ticket if you do.

If you come to a complete stop, you will not get a ticket.

So how do they know if you have stopped or not from a photo? If there is a camera detecting any vehicle moving on red then surely it will detect you as you turn right? As the sign on the link page states "includes right turn"
