When I hire a car in Orlando . Do I need a new style picture licence or will my old tatty one suffice ?

Both are acceptable. Even thouigh I have never been asked for it, I always take both the Plastic picture card and the paper one as well.
First time we went in 1989, I even took an International driving permit!!!!

How come you have 2 licences? Didn't you have to surrender the paper one to get the photo one?

AFAIK, it is illegal to hold 2 UK licences.

BTW, in answer to the original poster's question. My paper one was perfectly acceptable even though it was more sellotape than paper!

the "new" photo card driving licence is in two parts, a plastic photo i.d. and a green paper section which lists all your convictions etc.
You are supposed to keep both with you and should have both parts for international travel/car hire.

Sorry, the original question was about the two different types of licence and I had assumed from your post that you were stil holding your old paper licence as well as the photo licence and it attached A4 sheet.

The reason that I raised it, was that I had at one time lost my licence and had to replace it. When the old licence turned up I did not bother returning it and later we moved house and I sent the old one in for change of address -rather than the new one. DVLA got a little upset and threatened all sorts

when we went last year (with dollar) our confirmation specifically stated that uk drivers with new photocard licences must produce the green paper copy when collecting the vehicle.

I presume that still applies but to be sure I'll be taking both copies.
