Driving in the summer from DC?

Has anyone driven to Disney from the DC area during the summer months? We've done the trip twice in January, but never during summer traffic months. I'm concerned since 95 is so bad south of DC in spots between DC and N. Carolina. Are there are spots further south with heavy summer traffic or will we be okay if we can clear VA/NC early in the morning? Obviously Fri/Saturdays are the worst, but any other days to avoid?

I think you'll be fine. We drove from PA last summer and had no difficulties traffic-wise along 95 once we passed DC.

Yes, and the worst traffic is just south of DC in the evenings - mornings south are OK. Richmond can also be a bit of a pain at certain times. To be clear, I-95 is almost always fairly heavy traffic - not my favorite interstate, but a necessary evil. Need to be careful how you time passing through Jacksonville, FL also.

I've been driving from DC to SC/FL in late July for the past 5 years or so. We usually head out of DC on a Friday, hitting the road at 5 AM or so, with the intent of getting through Richmond before 8. I think its been a good strategy.

The main problem on 95 is between Richmond and DC, particularly DC to Fredricksburg. I'd say going though that stretch as early as possible is the key. South of Richmond the usual cause of backups is accidents, but those are random and unpredictable. Otherwise there really aren't any cities between Richmond and Jacksonville that have rush hours that clog 95.
