Driving in from Shreveport, LA

We drive from Slidell, La. It is I-10 all of the way until you turn south at Lake City, Fl. The last I heard is that they are still working on the bay bridge at Pensacola, so there can be a delay there. Don't know if this will help because you may take another route.

We just drove I-10 from Dallas in July 2006 and they were still working on the bridge at Pensacola. We leave Dec. 28th and are hoping the bridge is open at Pensacola! Other than the bridge this route is great for us. It takes us 18 hours from Dallas, that includes stops.

:moped: Sorry folks the I-10 bridge in Pensacola is still being worked on. They estimate it won't be finished until late 2007 or early 2008. Word of advice...Try not to use it during the rush hours in the morning or afternoon. :tinker: Here is a little pixiedust to make your bridge crossing a little easier.

We drive from Oklahoma to Dallas to Shreveport then head south on 49 to I 10. I do not remember traffic being bad at Pensacola. We took the I-110 through Pensacola to 98 then to Destin. That was in July 2006 on a Saturday night. Going home we took a route from destin west on 98 to a highway that went north to I-10. This route had a toll road and was before Pensacola.
was before Pensacola.

Destin has a very nice state park if you need somewhere to camp out before heading to Orlando.

I took the route that heads east from Shreveport to Jackson, Mississippi.

You then go south towards Mobile. I forget the highway numbers. It is a shorter route but the part going to Mobile has a lot of small towns to go threw.

Tigger

Just an added note: The Highway 90 bridge is an alternate route you might consider. Also it has kind-of nice views to boot. The fact is that they have repaired the old bridge as much as it is going to be repaired. They are building an brand new one. Going from west to east (which is the way you will be going on the way to WDW) is only one lane and it can get kind-of backed up at time. East to west is two lanes but once on the bridge you can not switch lanes so get behind someone you don't mind driving behind for a while :moped: :moped: :drive: Changing lanes is illegal and unsafe. Just consider the it part the adventure of getting there.

Is I-10 at Pensacola closed, is there a detour or are they just working on the bridge?

I-10 in New Orleans East is still grated. It is pretty nasty driving without a trailer.

No Cajun the I-10 bridge in Pensacola is not closed. The current bridge that was damaged by Ivan was just fixed so it can be used until they complete the new ones they are currently building. Yes, parts of it are grated. However the east bound is more grated than the west bound because the east bound bridge had more damage. They have done all the repairs they plan on doing to the current bridge, so what you see is what you get, but there are workers present because they are working on the new bridges. The "powers that be" decided that if they just re-did the old bridge that another hurricane would just destroy it again. Ivan was not the first hurricane to damage these bridges. So they are building new higher bridges they say should be a little more hurricane resistant. I hope this answers you question.

Thank you Poohbear. The I-10 in New Orleans was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina and work will continue for a very long time on that bridge too.

We are driving in from Houma, Louisiana (just SW of New Orleans) to stay at FW for the Mardi Gras holidays. We are going to be I-10 all the way to I-75. We were looking to stop somewhere between Tallahassee and Lake City for a one night layover so that we don't have to make the drive all in one day. Can anyone recommend a good campground in that area that you have stayed at. Doesn't need to be fancy or have all kinds of attractions since we will just be sleeping and getting up and leaving. My only requirements are clean, quiet and easy on/off the interstate. Any help is appreciated!

I just drove the I10 bridge and the new one is up and running!!

We have stayed at the Chattahoochee/Tallahassee West KOA which is right off of I-10. See http://rvparkreviews.com/regions/Florida/Chattahooche.html.

Also, there's a Tallahassee East/Monticello KOA just a little further down I-10 but I haven't stayed there. http://rvparkreviews.com/regions/Florida/Tallahassee.html

We drove from LA to Lake City for an overnight stop on our last trip. We stayed at Oaks 'N Pines Campground. http://rvparkreviews.com/regions/Florida/Lake_City.html This was nice for an overnight stop -- all pull-thrus.

Thanks iradi8! I was actually considering Oaks and Pines so it's good to hear from someone else who has stayed there. I think we are leaning that way so that we can do the bulk of the traveling the first day and arrive early and refreshed at the Fort the next.

We traveled all the way through last time and really regretted it.

Yes Grumpy is correct they finished the east bound bridge right before Christmas. It opened 12/23/06. Now there are 2 lines for both ways. The west bound is the one that will be open in late 2007 early 2008. But the east bound is so large there are 2 lines running both east and west bound until the west bound is complete. Fewer delays!!
