I've been looking at the photos of the I-10 bridge over Escambia Bay just east of Pensacola and I'm trying to find a way around this stretch of road. Any ideas? I'm not quite ready to swim across the bay with my luggage.

An Alabama Newsstation reported that there is a route 90 (I think) just north of I-10 that will be the detour route. Unsure of how much of a detour and as with all detours, probably very crowded.

Interstate 10 Bridge Washed Out Over Escambia Bay

PENSACOLA, FL (AP) - You can't drive across Florida's Escambia Bay on Interstate-10 because the bridge is washed out. Hurricane Ivan has destroyed a quarter-mile section of the eastbound section of the bridge.

The concrete was pushed up and is now partially in the water. The westbound section is still
standing, but is damaged. The alternate route would be U-S Highway 90, which also crosses the bay north of the I-10 bridge.

I heard today that 90 isn't looking too good either right now. So we'll take a northern route and completely bypass I-10 for this trip.

I would check with AAA. Rt. 90 is usually the alternate route when 10 is backed up but on the news they have shown areas of it shut down due to the amount of mud on the road.

This article was posted the day after Ivan--so I guess they found damage on 90--

In our paper today it said most bridges were having issues.

I also heard on the news today that I-40 was washed out somewhere, Tennessee, I think. We're driving in December, so hopefully they will have 90 or I-10 in good repair by then. BTW US 90 basically parallels I-10 from Texas to Florida. Both go through the town here in Texas where I live. Be prepared for delays, as US 90 is a two lane road, (1 lane each direction) in most areas.

Newspaper today said the detour to bypass the washed out I-10 is 300 miles (about 5-6 hours on a good day). Also stated that it could take about 18 months to rebuild I-10.

Additionally traffic is terrible--and gas is rough at the moment.

Perhaps those with some lead time, might consider air travel as an option if that big of a detour (which ultimately will cost more in gas and food and hotel) is too much to handle.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this as we're driving there from Houston via I-10 in December and I have a friend driving there in mid October. Sounds like this could be a real mess...
