I am driving on Friday, and am just wondering what is the best route.

I have taken 401 - Detroit, and I-75 right down. I have done this a few times in the past.

But I am now using Google Maps and my Garmin GPS, and they both suggest (a shorter route) of going through Buffalo - to Erie, and down I-79 and I-77. I have heard of this route befroe, and I know it is shorter, but I have been told the drive is not as safe, a lot more windy roads, and narrow highways on mountains.

Has anyone taken this before? Experiences? Recommendations?

Also do you know of any slowdown's along the way? current construction? etc....

I mentioned this in another post, if you go through Detroit, just note there is construction on I75 and you have to take 94 to 275 or 39 (I think). Make sure you double check that route as you do not want to get lost right there at the bridge! I have to check it myself as we are leaving Friday. We are leaving from Sarnia so I75 is faster for us. A little longer (about 60 miles or so) by Mapquest, but you can definitely drive faster on I75.

We drove last November through Buffalo taking 79-77. We went prior to leaving to CAA and asked them to map us the quickest route to Daytona. They did a map for us, giving us all the points that there was construction and speed traps. We were very happy haveing this and would get one for any trip that we go on. You should call and order it as soon as possible, as it takes a couple of days to do. DRIVE SAFE:moped: and have a great trip!!

My family and I always take Interstate 75 all way down because we think it's the most direct route and since you have taken it before you all about it, so I would stick with it.

That's our route to Florida.
QEW/I-190/I-90/I-79/US-19/I-77/I-26/I-95/I-4

Some people avoid this route during the winter because of the mountains.
When traveling during the winter it's imperative to see what the forecast is. I don't care if its the mountains of WV or the flatness of Ohio during a whiteout you don't want to be traveling during a bad winter storm.

When on US-19 approaching Summersville, WV obey the speed limits.

Also don't forget a real map if the GPS goes on the fritz.

Click on map for more info

We do this route too. From the GTA it shortens the drive by 3 hours.

A agree with HamHam. You must check the weather before you go.....a bad storm is a bad storm regardless for where you are.

The cops along US-19 will pull you over for even going 1 mile over the limit so be very, very careful though there. We just set the cruise for a little under the limit.

We prefer the 79/77 route. Beyond being shorter, we've found that it's a more relaxing drive because there is less traffic.

i have driven the route through buffalo several times.
the entire route is interstate highway. nothing narrow about it.
if the weather is good it is a very pretty drive through the mountains. this time of year the weather should be fine. if not there are four places to go east to I95 or west to I75. it is approx 150 miles fast than the I75 and you do not need to deal with the construction mess in detroit.
warning!!!!!
DO NOT SPEED ON HIGHWAY 19 there is a two hour stretch going into beckley west v that is crawling with nasty state cops.
have fun.

I am going I-79/I-77/I-95 route in a few days. First, do you know that you can print AAA Trip Tick from the internet? Go to aaa dot com, enter zip 12345 and then select tab "Directions". THis will give you info about all constructions and speed traps.

Here is info about some(!) of the speed traps on the way, if you will use that route. I made that list myself. This is for Garmin NUvi GPS, you have to find on internet how to load it on your GPS.

We've also done the I-77/79 route in winter. It's much prettier than the I-75, IMHO. You do need to be careful in inclement weather, but that's true anywhere.

We will be driving this exact route starting Saturday. We are going to try to hit Florence, SC on first day.

I'm wondering if anyone knows the total of tolls I will need to have available?

I've never been a good long-distance driver, but am curious as to how people find the drive. I would think it might be somewhat bearable if you're on vacation for a couple of weeks and will stop off here and there to see some sights?

I've done it a few times... but usually via I-75 (Detroit).

It's not so bad, especially if you have 2 drivers. It is LOOOONNNG! But you gotta keep telling yourself, every mile travelled is mile closer. Decide how long you want to go each day, and don't over do it. But if you feel you can last another 30 minutes, it makes a differnece in the end. Long trips like that should be taken calmly, no road rage. If you feel tired, don't kid yourself and say you'll be ok, GET TO A REST STOP and take a break.
