we are heading back to Disney November 28th and I have been checking the best routes for winter driving

this is the route I am thinking of as I have read to stay away from the 77 route in the winter.

QEW to Peace Bridge
I-90 to I-71
I-71 to I-75
I-75 to Florida

We have drove down many times. You can hit bad weather on any route. The Weather Network.com has a travel spot and you can check all US highways 3 day forcast. If there is going to be bad weather we alter plans then.

1) If you are going with the I-75 route, I would take 401 to Detroit and get on I-75, it sounds longer, but it is actually shorter, as you are not going around Lake Erie to get to Peace Bridge (about 100 km's less).

2) I would not worry so much about the I-77 route in winter, as long as you drive with care. It is still a major highway, and completley safe. It will also save you about 200 km's

I agree because it's about 4 hour drive to Detroit and from there just go straight down I-75 to the Florida Turnpike, then get off at whatever exit they have when going to WDW.

The other factor to include is time of day. If you're going to drive through a snow storm you want it to be during the day time.

All the routes have their issues. If you're going I75 the worst part can be in Canada. The 401 past London can be scary if a storm comes up. When we drove down in December 2005 we took the I79/77 route. The worst part, I90 right outside of Buffalo. It was covered in lake effect snow. Hardly saw another can and definitely didn't see a plow. Once we turned on to I79 everything cleared up. Interestingly the drive to I79 didn't take us any longer than it usually does. I'm not sure what that says about my driving.

Goto google maps and get directions form your home town to disney world. Click on the first option. I beleive thats magic kingdom. From the Toronto area it should give you a choice of 3 routes. In the winter I would sudjest printing off all 3 routes. Then before you go check the forcasts for all 3 routes and take the best weather route. All the routes are within a 2-3 hr window. So for bad weather it might be best to go the alternate route.

We are leaving the exact same time. We have scoped out all 3 routes and will do as many others have suggested, check the weather reports. We have settled on I75, but will cross over from Sarnia instead of Detroit (DH doesn't want to drive to Detroit :sad2:).

What time are you thinking of leaving? We are planning on leaving on the 27th around 10:00pm...DH works midnights - so he will do most of the driving at night while the kids sleep. We are planning on getting to GA before we stop for the night. Fingers crossed!!

Enjoy your trip.
