Driving from ME to WDW. Need advice!!

New to disboards and So glad Ive found it!

So, we are traveling to WDW for the first time with our 4 kids in December of this year!!!!!!

We do not want to drive the whole way without stopping overnight. I have looked at AAA and done a few TripTiks of stopping at either Williamsburg, VA then Savannah, GA to WDW. Or Maine to Gettysburg/Hershey, PA to Charleston, SC to WDW or Maine to halfway somewhere(not sure of this at all) then to WDW. We want to stop somewhere that will be fun and/or educational for the kids.
I prefer the first option of VA-GA-FL. But I am also thinking might it be better to drive to GA or NC or SC and stay two night sight seeing and then heading to WDW? I really have no idea.

What have been your experiences and where along the way would you suggest to visit?

Our kids are used to road trips and usually enjoy them. We once rented an RV and hit the road for almost three weeks. It was So very memorable. We are trying to recapture that!

What part of maine are you starting out from? ....this could make a big difference in the travel schedule and the advice you get.

Are you starting from the Portland area, Bangor, or Ft. Kent?

Considering your family's travel history, it seems as if the journey is just as important as the destination in this case. I think your first scenario (VA-GA-FL) might be the better option.

Wiilliamsburg in December has to be really nice.. We did our first Williamsbug this summer and had a blast, and my second I plan on visiting in December of 2013.
We will be driving our 9th trip to Disney in exactly one week and we are stopping again in Savannah. We have not actually toured Savannah but plan to another time.
I say if you have the time absolutely enjoy sites on the way down, weather permitting.

Williamsburg is a couple of hours out of your way if you're planning to drive I-95.

If you're driving a car (and depending on the day and age of kids), there are of course a number of attractions in Washington, DC- a RV in DC is a scary idea.

If you didn't want to go to DC proper, you can go to the National Air and Space Museum annex at Dulles airport. Depending on where you're starting from, and time, you'd get to DC in time to play.

Another good choice is Baltimore! The Inner Harbor is full of exciting ideas including the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center.
