We are traveling to WDW 10/3-10/13!!! We have decided to drive for multiple reasons so flying is not an option. For others who have made this trek...What is the best route - details would also be helpful? And How long did it take you? We are planning on leaving at suppertime 5-6PM and keeping going as long as possible. Will do the stretch 1 direct drive if not too tired but we are prepared to stop when and if we must as a safety issue. My inlaws are taking the kids that day so I can sleep in/rest till we are ready to leave so I will be fresh on the road (and I'm a night owl anyway.) My hubby probably won't be doing any driving until we are past DC as he is not good with interstate changes, directions, etc. Once we get to the point where I can say stay on this road for the next 4 hours he will take over :rotfl2: I'm also not a "big" bridge person so any heads up on the biggie's would be helpful too. Regular bridges are fine but which ones will I be on for more than 2-5 minutes?

Hello to a fellow Auburnite!

We've driven home from WDW (after 9/11) - the best tip that AAA gave us for that time period is to avoid I-95, and take the more interior route. I really suggest doing that for your trip - you'll avoid all of the stop and go traffic in and around New York, Washington DC and Atlanta.

Here is the route we took (reversed):

Massachusetts to Florida
I-90 to Sturbridge MA
I-84 to Scranton PA
I-81 to Wytheville VA
I-77 to Columbia SC
I-26 to Orangeburg/Charleston SC
I-95 to Daytona Beach FL
I-4 to Orlando, Tampa, Clearwater

Good luck!!

1st ... greetings from the MetroWest, nice to see another local on the boards.

I agree with avoiding 95 as much as possible until further south.

I did this trip non-stop (fuel and toilets only) and it was 22 hours or so.

Please make sure you do not push your driving too much!

We followed the AAA Triptik 2 years ago and had no problems. But, we left northern Mass. at 4 am and got to North Carolina around 5:30 pm. where we spent the night. The went on to Florida. If you have AAA, talk to someone at one of the offices to see what they can suggest and plan for you. We had a good time driving but the kids (teens) want to fly next time. Have fun!
