Driving - 81 or I-75

Hi - to those who drive which route do you prefer - I 75 or down 81. I'm leaving from Kingston ONtario so I have a couple of choices although across the border to 81 is closest to where we are. Also, how is the border crossing at Detroit? Does it take a long time because of the trucks?

There are quite a few threads around here on this very subject, with mixed opinions. I've done part of the "81-95" route, which is actually shorter for you. It also, IMHO, is more interesting and scenic, with considerably less truck traffic.

As far as Windsor/Detroit goes, you have two choices - the bridge and the tunnel. Trucks for the most part stick to the bridge, making it the much heavier crossing, but it is much easier to get to, runs right next to I-75, and has twice as many lanes, so traffic often moves faster. But if getting there quicker is your goal, go the other way ...

We just drove down and went the I-75 route. If you are worried about the crossing, don't be. We weren't delayed at all crossing the bridge at Windsor. If you decide to do the I-75 route I'd suggest getting "Along the I-75" a book by Dave Hunter. We actually had no delays at all on the I-75 all the way to Florida.

We drive down from Brockville and last time we stayed on I81 down thru South Carolina and really enjoyed it more that cutting over to I95 in Virginia.

Don't do I-75 from where you are- you will be wasting so much time. If you were going during winter that would be different.
