Tring to decide weather to drive or fly from Jersey Shore area. I am sure there are web sites out there to calculate the millage and approximate gas costs, But I can not find them. Can anyone help? Thanks

maps.yahoo.com or maps.google.com will give you a route and total milage. WDW is exactly 13 hours from my place in MD so figure 16-17 hours from NJ (assuming you drive 65-70 mph).

Divide miles by your vehicle's highway milage to get gas used. I'm budgeting $3.00 a gallon right now but that could go up or down.

Be sure you check your air pessure before you leave...it can affect MPG a lot.

Also, consider other factors:

-- Time. Do you have the time to spare or will it cost you valuable vacation time? (We're both teachers, so we could manage the time over the summer. For other people, it would make a real difference.)

-- Is your car up to the challenge? Is it big enough to give everyone the room they would need for such a long drive?

-- Are your kids up to the challenge? Or will they drive each other and you insane on the trip home? (I imagine that getting there will be relatively easy for them.)

-- Factor in an overnight hotel stay (and pre-plan it) and meals along the way.

For us, from Long Island, the better solution was still flying. But you're right to look at all your options.

that there is not a vehicle out there that cost less than 50 cents a mile to drive. The cost of fuel is small compared to the other costs.

Excellent that is what I was trying to find. Now just the big decision of which is a better deal. leaning towards flying time factor and all.

Hi neighbor! You should really check out Spirit Airlines out of Atlantic City. They usually have great deals. My cousing lives in Brigantine and recently got a great deal on Spirit. Good luck!

We drove from CT to Orlando Christmas week 2006...we found out early Dec that a friend of our's son was going to play in the Champs Sports Bowl Dec 29th. Of course, by then, we would have had to spend a bazillion dollars to fly to Orlando during that week. So we rented a car (to save wear and tear on our car) and drove. It was okay driving down because we were excited and we able to spend a night with DH's sister in VA. Once everything was over, I dreaded the ride home...it took us 19 hrs (which was actually great time) vs 2+ hrs to fly. Of course flying home was out of the question, but all I could think of was how nice it would have been to jump on a plane and be home in no time! To me, when a vacation ends, I just want to be home!

You are smart to consider all your options.

Good luck!

All good points. I'll add another one - driving is more risky than flying.
