I was wondering if anyone has rented a car and drove to WDW, then flew back home? We are planning a trip for Sept. and long story short - can take the time to drive to WDW, but worried about timing on getting back since the kids will have to return to school and can't afford to miss an extra day?

If you have driven, just wondering where and when did you drop off the rental car? TIA!

Before thinking much more about doing this, have you checked out the one-way rental charges? Agencies typically add a fairly hefty fee onto the total, when you're not returning the car to the original point.

No, I didn't know that they did that. Thank you for letting me know. I'll have to look into this. Just trying to find the best way to enjoy our time at WDW for as long as we can!! :goodvibes

It will probably be cheaper to fly round trip. We looked into a one way rental for a 3 hour drive. The one way fee was several hundred dollars.

There is one way that you can actually save money renting one way and flying back.

Certain times of the year rental car companies have too many cars either in the north or south and need them in the other area.

Last year and I don't know which direction or when, one company was offering one way deals of $1 per day unlimited mileage for up to I think two weeks of rental. So you would pick up the car in the North, usually at an Airport, drive it south and keep it for your stay and then turn it in.

Like I said this is for only certain times of the year and I think cars move north in the summer and south in the winter but I'm not sure.

Its cheaper for them to rent it and have you drive it then to pay a car hauler maybe $300 to ship it.

I found this story but I think someone posted a different one a while back.

to maximize your time at WDW, I can't see how driving down will do that. Unless you are planning to make the trip down a scenic, look-at-the-sights kind of trip, I'd just fly & get there.
