Drive-in movies

I got curious of all the suggestions/comments and checked the policies of the place I'm thinking of taking my family.

They recommend using a boom box if worried about draining the car battery. They'll also jump start cars that need it. This chain doesn't allow pets, but does allow service animals. They say no alcohol, but imply that outside food is allowed (but no grilling). They say no hiding anyone in a trunk to avoid paying.

There are two sort of in the DFW area. One is very old and one is fairly new and I love the old one. It's hard to find a pleasant evening to go though.

I love the drive-in movie theaters, especially when the weather is nice. They are great. The old style speakers don't always sound great, but our drive-in has a radio station to tune-in to.
We live near a family drive-in, they only show G or PG-13 movies and no alcohol. Never saw any inappropriate behavior. People seem to be coming to see the movies.

Don't hate me, but I was never a fan of the drive-in. A cramped car with mosquitos and the car next to you smoking wasn't a fun way to spend an evening. DH took the kids a few times, but I always stayed home.

Haven't been to a drive-in movie since probably the late 80's when the last one in this area closed. I went often as a child, and then later on in HS and college on dates. As far as I recall, they were only open in the summer. I had no idea they still exist anywhere in the US.

We have one near us and its so fun! Its 2 movies for $9, which is a great deal. :) We usually get something to bring to eat, whether its fast food or something from home and we almost always sit outside the car in camp chairs.

I think there are a handful of drive-ins within a 50-mile radius of me in varying directions, mostly for the nostalgia. Truthfully I think they're a terrible way to watch a movie, unless you're going for "something else."

We still have a couple in our area. We love it, and go a few times every year (ours are open from mid-April to Oct). DH brings a stereo and battery (portable jumper) so we get great sound. We like to sit in our reclining lawn chairs and add blankets if it's still chilly. Some nights are three movies and you pay by the carload ($20 for the car). The snack bar serves burgers, fries, pizza, plus the typical movie foods for decent prices. So, it's an inexpensive way to entertain the family. Halloween weekend they have trick or treating and a costume contest (adults, kids, dogs) between the features. It's fun.

DH would love to buy them out and run the place as his retirement job. :)

We rarely have weather nice enough for the Drive-In, but we have one that is packed on the weekends. I do not like to see movies for the first time there and will opt for an indoor theater with all the bells and whistles. It can be fun though to go to the drive-in to watch something with a group or they do these theme marathons of old movies and that is enjoyable, again, if the weather's not too hot.

We had 2 local drive-ins where I lived. Dating myself here, but I saw my 1st Disney movie, The Love Bug, at a drive-in. Some movies, like Smokey & The Bandit, are best seen at a drive-in IMHO.

Wish we had one where we live, but unfortunately the closest one is over 50 minutes away.

There are about 400 drive-ins left in the United States. We are lucky to have two in driving distance. We love the ambiance and the food, but honestly, for big budget sci-fi movies, we prefer going to an enclosed theatre, at least the first time we watch it. But we usually got a few times a year.

Also, you can bring your dog.

Also, also, double feature!

I remember going as a kid (and I think the town I lived in still has it) but I'm not sure about where I live now. I'll have to see if there is one within comfortable driving distance.

The one closest to me seems to have one admission price that admits to two movies. Its been a while since I've seen a double feature. Right now they're showing Boss Baby and Fate of the Furious. Kids aren't free, but it's something like $1.50.

Um drive ins have been double features since the beginning of time.

We love going to the drive in! The one in our area is about a 45 minute drive away. It's open from early April to mid November. We go almost every weekend if I'm not working. It is hugely popular, cars start lining up over 30 minutes before the box office opens. Last year they had to rework the entry to get the lines of cars off the busy roadway leading to the box office. They added another screen last year too. Now they have 5 screens! The small old concession building was knocked down about 3 years ago & a beautiful new one was built with more concession lines & bathrooms to handle all the crowds. They have typical movie snacks plus pizza, burgers, hot dogs & fries. You get 2 movies for $9, all first run movies. They always have the latest family movies & blockbusters right from the opening weekend.

You can bring dogs but they must be on leash. There are no poles & speakers, you use your car or portable radio, but the sound is great. There are a few rules: you can sit outside the car but must stay inside your own parking space, no sitting in the spot next to your car. Hatches on SUVs etc must be tied down to the level of the roof so you aren't blocking the view of people behind you, must keep all the lights in/ on your vehicle off, no leaving garbage next to your car & most. Importantly: no smoking! They have smoking areas set up along the sides of each screen area but no smoking in, on, around the car parking areas. It is great as a no smoker to be able to sit in my car without someone smoking 2 feet away. In busy times they pass out garbage bags & twine to tie down the hatches as you enter. And they have employees walking the lanes enforcing the rules & helping with tieing down hatches.

You can bring in food & drink but no grilling. They do have free wi fi, but it can be slow & sketchy. On summer weekends, the box office opens at 7, people line up before 6:30 & the movies don't start until after 9. There is a nice atmosphere, we've seen several families come together, set up camping tables with spreads of food. Kids toss balls or frisbees & there is a small playground & a really mini putting area open before the movie. People play board games & cards, lots of laughing & music heard.

The drive in has been in the owner's family for generations. He is passionate about drive ins . He is onsite all the time tooling around on a Segway making sure everything is going ok. Forgot to say, on weekends in the summer especially, all the screens sell out. Hugely poplar place!

So we went last night for a double feature of The Boss Baby and Fate of the Furious. Interesting double feature, but most cars actually stayed for both. A few just came for the first movie and left. My wife is a big procrastinator, and our kid wanted to check out the closest Disney Store for a Cars 3 toy. I thought we were pressed for time so we grabbed something at Burger King to take in. We got in about 10 minutes before the movie started and there was plenty of space. It was $7.95 for adults and $1.25 for our kid. It wasn't quite like the drive-in I remember visiting as flea markets. Those were sloped, but this one had an undulated lot so drivers could point their cars up or down to look over other cars.

I did bring some camp chairs, but forgot to bring blankets. It wasn't too cold, but a blanket and/or extra layers would have been nice. My wife stayed inside, mostly just staring at her smartphone during the first movie, but I brought a radio and listened from outside. My kid loved it outside. I started the car out of a bit of caution once during the movie and also for about the entire intermission. The place had a decent enough concessions stand although they allowed outside food. It also had a kids play structure that was as nice as you'd find in a city park.

Our kid loved the first movie but went back in the car for the second and fell asleep while mom and dad watched.

Strangely enough another car couldn't start (I think they left the auxiliary lights on) and I remembered the portable jump starter I brought. It didn't work though, even though I had charged it. It's over 10 years old so maybe it's time for a new one. They did have jumper cables and someone lined up to help. Our car started though.

It was pretty fun. We might go back, but this place only has two screens.

I was raised in Camden NJ where the drive in movie originated. I remember going to 1 or 2 as a kid but there aren't anymore in our area. I think my kids would get a kick out of it.

I believe it was at or near the Airport Circle on Admiral Wilson Blvd.

We lived close to a drive-in theater when I was a kid, but I only remember going once. Can't recall what film it was. Like someone mentioned, the first movie was a kiddie film, then the second was for adults when the kids presumably fell asleep.

The screen could be seen from the road, and people would sometimes park along the shoulder to watch, although they couldn't hear.

These days it's possible as long as the radio frequency is known. They told it to us when we paid and the frequency was on our receipt. They might rotate frequencies though. I'm not sure there was any convenient place to park and actually get a good look at a screen at this place.

There was plenty of external noise for anyone watching outside a car. There were plenty of chairs set up and one family just lied down on the hood. A fire truck went by with its sirens on, and we were also pretty close to a freeway.

I have a very nice one about 25 minutes from me here in Illinois. I try to go at least once per year.

The one I went to in High School was right across the street from a drive thru store that had the best pizza in town.we'd grab a pizza and a case of beer and be set for the night.
