Drive-in movies

Um drive ins have been double features since the beginning of time.

We used to go to one in the 80's all the time. It was never a double feature...3 screens and 2 showings, but you had to leave and pay again. No drive-ins left by us anymore. Wish there were!

The one I went to in High School was right across the street from a drive thru store that had the best pizza in town.we'd grab a pizza and a case of beer and be set for the night.

This place said no alcohol, although I don't know what they can do if someone claims they bought a case of beer to take home. I don't think there was a good place to park across the street.

There were also signs saying no drugs, with an outline of a marijuana leaf. I'll just say I didn't get a contact high.

I was only at a drive-in once, during college. The place advertised something like $7 a carload back in the early 80's. Somebody in our group had an early 70's Chrysler Imperial that seated 7 comfortable. I think we got 10 people into it with plenty of trunk space for folding lawn chairs.

There's still one not too far from here. We went to one of the Shrek movies there.

There was one along the highway that played adult films after midnight. It was on the path home from my parents' friends' house. We had to start leaving early LOL

I can remember going to a local outdoor theater a few times as a kid in the 70s. it was OK. That was a long time ago obviously, but if my memory is correct I recall preferring the indoor theaters. In doors was more comfortable.

I'm looking at the history of drive-ins in my area, and it was literally packed with them from the 40s to the early 80s. Many were visible from the freeway. I've looked at the closed theaters on cinematreasures, and there were lots of them.

Earlier I said I'd never actually seen a movie, but there's a chance that my parents took me to one when I was young. I certainly don't remember ever seeing a drive-in movie (save a glimpse from the road).

We are at the drive in right now waiting for the movie to start. We're seeing The Circle with Logan as the 2nd feature. The other screens have Fate of the furious with Get Out; Beauty & the Beast with Kong; Unforgettable with Chips & Boss Baby with Smurfs. The weather is cool, only high 50s but there are quite a few cars at each theater. There are at least 25 cars in our theater right now, movie starts in about 1/2 hour.

The place I went to was only two screens. There's another theater in the same chain in Sacramento and they have six screens. I'm not quite sure how they figure it out, but one is showing the same movie three times, and the others are showing different overlapping double feature combinations. Actually, the one in San Jose also has six screens and is showing the same combinations with exactly the same showtimes. Weird.

My boys are 16, 18 & 23. We still go to drive-in movies at least 2-3 times a summer. We've introduced the drive-in to some of their friends who have never been. We have fun. We stop and get some pizzas to take in, bring out own cooler, the kids usually toss the lacrosse ball or pass a soccer ball before the movie starts. We people watch, that's for sure! We like to see action movies when we go.

Just wondering what people though of them. Strangely enough, I've never actually seen a drive-in movie before in my life, and I was born in the 70s. I'd passed by a theater though while a movie was showing. My kid's favorite movie is Cars, which has a drive-in movie scene during the end credits, so I was asked about what it was. I think there's one left with 25 miles of where I live.

I've physically been to a drive-in movie property before, so I kind of get how it works. As a kid my folks took me to flea markets that was set up at one. I saw the little speakers that were supposed to be hung on the edge of a window. I've heard that newer setups use a car radio.

I also get that watching movies wasn't necessarily what everyone's was doing.

I miss drive-ins! They were so much fun.

There's one up where DH grew up. We talked about going up for a night and doing a date thing at the drive in.

Growing up our area had two drive-ins about 5 miles apart. My parents took us all the time. With 5 kids it was the cheapest way to get us all to the movies!! We loved it. My favorite memory was getting youhoo and crackerjack at the concession. There was a play area and also a small train ride that went around the screen. During high-school my boyfriend (now husband), sister and her boyfriend (now husband) all worked at the drive-in. We had such a good time. We sold the tickets, worked at the concession and my husband had the job of clearing the cars out when the show was over which sometimes included waking people up who fell asleep or knocking on fogged up windows to get people on their way. It was always interesting. On Sundays during the day they used the area as a flea market which was very busy. None left in our area anymore.....one property is a huge FedEx facility and one is garden nursery.
