Do I need to worry about the drinking water if I do a port adventure in Cozumel?

The hotels and restaurants in Cozumel do use purified water, and it is chlorinated. However whether it's purified to a standard that your tummy would be happy with is another question. I would recommend bottled water in Cozumel.

All water has some type bacteria in it -- it all depends on what your "innards" are accustomed to, and how sensitive they are to the different types of bacteria. A nephew lived in Spain for two years and thought he would be "immune" to water problems in Mexico. He ended up with Montezuma's revenge for the rest of our Mexican Riviera cruise.

On another trip on another side of the family, a cousin's DH (who's a world traveler) had similar problems with the water in Mexico.

Personally, I wouldn't risk drinking the local water when bottled water is so readily available.

If the excursion does not provide bottled water, you might want to pack your own reusable bottle to fill on the ship before your excursion or purchase some bottled water. I'm not sure where you'd be drinking water from on your excursion, but if they do not supply you with bottled water, I'd definitely bring my own. We've traveled to Mexico many, many times, and it is never suggested to drink tap water there.

bottled may be worse than the faucet ....

On a visit I drank nothing but bottled water outside the major resorts

got a bottle from a street vendor one day .....

DANGER WILL ROBINSON

I guess the bottle was dirty on the outside cuz I was down for 24 hours ......

street vendors get their ice from???????

and the bottle floats in??????

Sooooo...should I be worried about eating any of the food?

You know, i read somewhere that more people in Mexico and other latin countries would get more cases of food born illness if it wasn't for the chilis and spices they eat. I have never gotten sick in mexico(ironically have only ever gotten food poisoning twice from Rubios in CA). I tend to eat spicier things there like Camarones al Diablo, etc and put hot sauce on everything.

My dad tells a story of when he was on Shore Patrol in the Navy. The sailors had been warned not to drink tap water while they were in port. Only bottled water. There was a nice hotel where they were selling bottled water outside the hotel to tourists, etc.

One of my father's duties was to also patrol alleyways to make sure that none of their sailors were in trouble, causing trouble, etc. When he went down the alleyway behind this particular hotel there were kids filling up water bottles from the tap and using a bottle capper to seal them. They were then putting them in boxes to be taken to the front of the hotel to sell to the tourists, etc.

He drank canned Coke and coffee while in port the rest of the time he was in the Navy.

When were there in April on the Fantasy my son got an intestinal sickness from something in Mexico and it was definitely bacterial. We weren't being super careful because we were at a resort. He did have a soft drink with ice and also a virgin Pena colada.

We go to Cozumel 1-2 times a year for three weeks at a time. Restaurants, resorts and locals use purified water to drink, cook and make ice in their homes and businesses. We've never had an issue for all the years we have been going. We have local friends and also a friend who lives there but is from TX so I get the correct scoop from them.

The navy story has me a little worried.

A fifty year old story should not have you worried. No metal bottle cappers on water bottles. You'd be able to see a broken plastic seal. But if you're that worried, bring a bottle from the ship.

P.S. In all our seven trips to the different cities in Mexico we've been to, we've eaten the food and drank the bottled and /or purified water, and we have never gotten sick.

You know what, I didn't even click on those, but for the multitude trips we've made to different parts of Mexico and other places in the Caribbean, we've never had even the smallest issue with food or drink. I'm not into fear mongering, sorry.

I resent your "fear mongering" snipe. My main point was to be aware of your surroundings and what you're buying/drinking/eating and make sure it's reputable or trustworthy. If you have the slightest trepidation regarding things trust your instincts. Don't just assume that an unbroken seal on a bottle is proof enough. You cannot unequivocally say that you'll notice a broken seal and that will be enough to ensure the water is safe.

We recently did an excursion in Cozumel and the tour guide explained the old adage of "don't drink the water" by way of the minerals in the ground water not being something tourists are able to acclimate to. He went on further to talk about the precautions and processes they have adapted over the years and said the bottled water was safe to drink. And that the water that is piped into them are treated and chlorinated well to protect the systems of their tourists as well as their own locals.

I always ate in local restaurants down the 'backstreets' in cozumel with my fellow Mexican CMs. I didn't know what I was eating half the time, they just oredered/ kept brining food out. Never once got sick.

Now one time on an embark morning, I went to Ruby Tuesdays in Cape Canaveral...ended up in isolation that night thanks to eating there...
