I did this a couple times after graduating college. The first time my dad and I did it together, which was a truly awesome experience. There were three or four that we split, and we did it over a period of about 5 hours, so there were no issues.
This past year on a trip with some college friends I did it again, but solo this time, and in less time. I started around 4 and finished at about 8. Illuminations was getting started, and I made the decision that I would watch that as I walked out of EPCOT via the International Gateway, and caught a boat to go see the 9:00 Illuminations show. I remember getting on the boat, and my head feeling really good against the cold glass.
I also remember stopping at the Boardwalk... and the Yacht and Beach Club... and the Swan and Dolphin... and then I started to feel sick.
I also felt like we had been at Swan and Dolphin for an inordinately long time, so I decided to exit and catch a cab back to the All Star Movies where we were staying. I lurched toward the front of the boat, where the captain who had been apparently watching me for some time in my stupor asked nicely if I was leaving them for the night. I responded with 'Yeah... Where are we?' to which he replied 'Disney's Hollywood Studios'.
'Jackpot.' I said. I meandered my way in to the Fantasmic show and sat down in the very back row just in time for the show, which I saw about 20 minutes of before looking around and deciding being on a bus with all these people would not be a great idea. So I lurched once more towards what I thought was the exit, only to notice two cast members leaving behind me. They asked if I knew where I was going and if I was lost.
'I'm just trying to leave.'
'Ok, then you're lost. Follow us.'
They were very nice. Turns out they work at AK but pick up extra Fantasmic shows for more money. They asked me what I had been up to and I explained the whole ordeal. They laughed and asked me to invite them next time. Apparently I was somewhere backstage I should not have been, but I don't remember seeing anything really so I have no great stories of behind the scenes stuff.
I got on to a half filled bus and sat in a corner by myself, euphoric when I reached the hotel, where I admonished my friends for ever allowing me to be alone in the state I was in. They just laughed and took some embarrassing pictures of me. All's fair I suppose.
It was a great night. I would highly recommend it.
One tip... If you're going to have a margarita in Mexico (which you have to do if you are doing this seriously) then START there. Do not finish there. It will ruin you, if it's the last thing you drink. And make sure you have a big meal in your stomach. And try to avoid the summer.
Ok that was three tips.
Bye now.
