Dressing and stuffing

Are they the same thing? Or different? I never heard the term dressing until I moved south. Enlighten me please.

Stuffing is cooked inside the turkey while it's roasting in the oven.

Dressing isn't cooked in the turkey.

My granny had a separate recipe for each one. I hate stuffing because it's so greasy from the drippings of the turkey. I love dressing with gravy on it.
 
IMO, they're the same thing. It seems like the word "dressing" is mostly used in the south. I'm from western NY and we've always called it stuffing, whether is goes in the bird or not.

I use them interchangeably as well. Although, there is bread dressing and cornbread dressing, and those are very different.

Also, in the south, they will make dressing that is cooked in a large casserole dish with chunks of turkey or chicken mixed in. Not sure if this is done in the north as well or not. It is my favorite. I love it that way. I don't care for my dad's northern (bread) stuffing recipe. I prefer the cornbread dressing with turkey pieces in it.
 
Dressing around me is baked in a pan, it has a more solid, cuttable consistancy if that makes sense........but then again, i make "stovetop stuffing" so what do I know :rotfl2: But I always thought stuffing was made in the bird until I became a gourmet cook with Stovetop:rotfl:

I agree. It is just stuffing to us!

My mom makes it...stuffs some in the bird and the rest in baking dish!

I hate the term dressing. Dressing goes on a salad LOL. We've always called it stuffing regardless of whether it was made in a pan or stuffed in the bird. The Stovetop Stuffing makers seem to agree!
 
Dressing is always outside of the turkey, and stuffing can be either in or out of the bird.

To me, stuffing is more "deconstructed" - bread cubes, sausage, apples, onions, whatever - you could easily pick a stuffing apart.

Dressing, however, is more mixed & "set" - kinda like how you would think of a cake when you mix all the ingredients together & bake. Once it's baked, you can't pick it apart.

For Thanksgiving, we always have cornbread dressing - which is wonderful!! (And always outside of the turkey!)

Sometimes, we'll put some sort of stuffing inside the turkey just to make it look pretty, but we never eat that. LOL!

A couple of years for Christmas, we've had a crown rib roast & have put a Sausage & Wild Rice Stuffing inside the middle. It also has cranberries in it - very festive!

Anyway, I've served it at Christmas as a side dish as well (not inside the meat), & we've still called it stuffing (& not dressing).

Dressing = always outside & separate from the turkey & more of a "set" baked casserole

Stuffing = can be inside or outside of the turkey & is more of a looser consistency - like Stove Top

And do you put anything "unique" in the dressing/stuffing? Like oysters, apples, ham, hard boiled egg etc, seen that all done.

As for me, I grew up with giblet gravy, and stuffing/dressing with nothing unique in it.

No giblets at our house. Plain gravy made from the brownings and drippings in the roasting pan.

We use the traditional bread stuffing (my Grandma's recipe- so almost 100 years old) for our roast turkeys. But one year we had a duck instead of turkey. It was stuffed with a wild rice and sausage stuffing that was to die for!

I would agree that it is 'stuffing' if it is used to actually stuff the turkey!

However, I am from the South, and it has always been Turkey and Dressing, whether it is stuffed or not. Can't imagine saying that I would like a good 'Turkey and Stuffing' dinner on Thanksgiving!

Maybe just a regional or language, semantics, type of thing.
 
No Giblets!

My mother did use giblets.... I decided that I would skip them!!!!
I do make an old-fashioned, southern dressing/stuffing with cubed fresh cornbread, bread crumbs, onion and celery cooked in some turkey broth, salt, maybe some pepper, and SPICE ISLAND poultry seasoning which is wonderful. It has the sage and all the herbs that you want... but not full of other things like too much black pepper... (McCormick is awful for this reason. just not good at all....) Just carefully fold the broth and onion and celery mixture into a big bowl of the dry ingredients... Until it is very wet, but not 'dripping'.... dump into baking dish... bake at a hot temperature, hot enough to brown the top, but just solidify the dressing... not re-bake everything.

I live on the west coast (WA) but lived on the east coast (VA) until I was 8. We always called it stuffing.

I won't eat stuffing if it's actually cooked inside the turkey. Too much risk, and yes, just greasy and bleh.

I loooooove stuffing. I grew up with my mom adding minced giblets, minced mushrooms, and I think a very tiny amount of minced celery. Yummy! I really like it with the giblets (same with giblet gravy). I haven't tried adding the giblets when I cook a Thanksgiving meal, though. I'm scared I'll ruin it. :)

I"ve grew up using the term "dressing." My grandmother was from Massachusetts and our whole family said "dressing.":confused3 We don't have a stitch of "southern" in us. Her "dressing" was made with crackers and giblets and had a very wet and dense texture to it. Based on that, I assumed that "stuffing" was more "bread like". But I'm sure I'm wrong.

I've been living in VA for 20 years and it seems I've switched to using the term "stuffing" because most people around me say that so it's just a habit for me now.

But I will NEVER say "supper" over "dinner." Supper sounds "country."

lol. ON that note, I don't see where that boxed nastiness can make any type of decision on what that particular food is. :goodvibes
