We are going on our first Disney cruise on April 17th on the Magic. My husband and I have cruised before but this is the first for our kids, ages 4, 7 and 8. I was wondering if the "no shorts for dinner" applies to the children as well as the adults.

I also wanted to know if a jacket is required in Lumiere's on the casual nights. Do people dress up more in that restaurant than in the other two, even on casual nights?

Thanks for all the great info!

Hi there!! I have never been on a Disney cruise either, but just wanted to let you know we'll be on the same sailing date as you all!!
What are the sexes of your children? We have one daughter cruising with us, she is going to be 8 on the day after disembarkation (the 25th!).
Hope to meet you there!!

my children have always changed and put on long pants for dinner. However, i have boys and they can use zip off pants, so that all they have to do is zip on the bottom part to make pants from shorts.

The only time Dh has worn a jacket is for Formal night and when we went to Palos.

My oldest daughter will be 8 1/2 and my younger daughter will be 7. My son will be 4 1/2. My oldest will be in the lab by herself so I'm hoping she'll make some friends there. She's usually very social so I don't think she'll have any trouble making friends, but you never know.

A jacket is not required in Lumiere's if it isn't formal or semi formal night. We enjoyed dressing up every night of the cruise though. DS wore khakis to dinner if he wasn't in his suit but I suppose if kids are young enough for the knicker suit outfits that would fit in well. Just play shorts/outfits wouldn't be appropriate. However, this is a great debate on this board with some people wanting to follow the guidelines by the letter & others wanting to wear what they want no matter what.

On our cruise in November the only people I noticed weren't dressed up for dinner was a family I shared the elevator with. They were in Tshirts & sweats & made comments to the affect of it wasn't formal night & they didn't feel like dressing up.

Thanks for all the info. My husband and I have been on several cruises (without kids and never with Disney). We always enjoy dressing up for dinner. We planned on having the kids dress up on the formal and semi-formal nights, but I wasn't sure what most people did on the casual nights. We'll have to pack a few pairs of khaki's for my son and some sundresses for the girls. Thanks again for the help!

You'd be perfectly set that way. We sailed several times on the Magic when it was still doing 3 & 4 (pre-Wonder launch) and even though the other nights (non formal) are supposedly less formal DH mentioned that the one night he went into Lumiere's without a jacket he "felt" underdressed.

But as already mentioned this is an issue of HUGE debate.

On the 7 nighters, there are formal and semi formal nights where the dress is somewhat self explainitory. The other nights, polo shirts and slacks are great.

That being said, I (and son) where a dress shirt and tie to formal nights. You will see people in tuxes, suits, sport coats, shirts and ties, all the way down to tee shirts and jeans and sometimes shorts. I have taken a suit before and for the amount of room it takes to haul accross country vs. time wearing it, it just is not worth it (for my family and myself).
