Dress for Dinners?

We are taking the 4 day wonder cruise next May. I was wondering if anyone knows what the usual attire is for dinner? Do women usually wear dresses and guys in bottom down shirts with ties? What about the kids? I know PALO is dressy but I am hoping that we can get away with casual dressing for the other restaurants!

We saw all types of outfits in August including shorts. I think it is a personal preference but I know there are a lot of threads on the subject. I wore dresses or pants and a blouse. My husband wore Docker type pants with casual button shirts. We never felt out of place. Don't worry about getting over dressed. Just be comfortable and have fun.

Annae, there is a thread on the front page about dress code and what Disney requests.
I agree what you bring to comply with Disney's requests is personal choice, showing up to a semi-formal dinner (like at Palo's) in tee shirt and shorts, I feel, is rude to everyone else.
There are other dining options, like the buffer and pizzeria, where you can wear almost anything you want, but most evenings will be 'business-casual'.
Just my opinion.

I always wonder - why does it really matter what anyone wears to dinner.
You are on the ship, you have paid for the meal. Why can't you just dress the way you want to dress, it is your vacation after all. Just because you prefer to be casual you shouldn't have to forgo the meal that you paid for in the dining room and be relegated to the deck food instead.
If I want to have dinner in a tux or ball gown or shorts and a tee shirt why should the person at the next table care.
I don't care what the other people in the room are wearing, to me it is more important that they are quiet, well behaved and considerate of their fellow diners.

Hooray, Robin, my sentiments exactly. It's a vacation and everyone should do what is comfortable to them. I don't care what others are wearing. I just want to enjoy myself and hope everyone else is doing the same. I usually think of vacation as "casual".

Why can't you just dress the way you want to dress, it is your vacation after all.

It is about what your host, DCL, has requested. They have provided you beautiful resturants with certain ambviances that create moods and experiances. They have also provided alternative resturants for those who don't feel like getting cleaned up and dressed up a little.
I am sure that in your area there are resturants that would not allow you to enter in shorts and tank top. Maybe you do not frequent these places for that reason but they are there. But you would force your short and flip flop wearing self on others who have opted to try for a little class on a special vacation.
Maybe Myrtle Beach, the Redneck Riveraria, would be more appropiate. The last time I was there, about 6 years ago, they practiced the very style of dinning you mention.

Yes we do have all types of restaurants here and yes I do frequent all of them from the most high class to the more family style places. And no I am not a shorts and flip flop type of person
but I also do not tend to take note of what others around me are wearing or doing. I do not tend to care about those things, I say live and let live. I am there to enjoy myself with my own travelling party, as long as I am not loud, rude or obnoxious, and other people are the same, the outer trappings of cothing are not a priority.
To each their own and the two should be able to co-exist peacefully in the same room.

I would say, Triton's, you would want church outfits.. men in nice slacks and button-down, a tie a good touch. A girl in nice slacks and blouse, or a nice dress. Kids, I would say, just nice pants and a shirt would be fine for a young boy, and a nice dress for a young girl. Palo's is the same as Tritons.

The rest of the evenings, I say, khakis and polo's is fine for guys, and the same for girls, or a simple dress/slacks and blouse. The other restaurants are more casual then Triton's or Palo.

My rule of thumb is no jeans/shorts/t-shirts.. and you will feel comfortable and will blend right in, since there is a wide variety of attire worn on the 4 day. Some people get all decked out, others just show up casual.

It's a balance of what you feel comfortable in and want to wear, and what would be respectful to your shipmates. I wouldn't worry too much... if you use the no jeans/shorts/t-shirts rule, you'll be fine

I'm with you Ruvidu. We have been on countless cruises and we feel the same way. We don't think that someone elses need to be "comfortable" should override the requested dress code. People always have the option of changing clothes right after dinner should they so choose. The casual restaurant on board serves basically the same exact food and is set-up at dinner specifically for those who choose to stay casual at meal times. They aren't missing out on anything, they are just dining with like-minded cruisers. It's a great idea if people would just follow what Disney is trying to tell them in a subtle way. All would be happy and well and threads on this topic would just cease to exist!

Interesting. I was on the Wonder a year ago and I saw no casual restaurant on the ship except for the pizza and hamburger places for kids. Please tell me where this is. I'd be happy to go there.

I don't NEED to be cleaned up, I am clean. That was extremely rude. I don't wear bathing suits or shorts to dinner.

I've met a lot of nice people on this board who are very helpful and kind. I hope to NEVER meet Ruvidu or anyone like him on a cruise.

My DH and I will be dining in Palo on the Wonder in April 2004. My husband WANTS to wear a tux and I will be wearing a long evening gown. We will be celebrating our 5th anniversary. Personally, I don't care what other people wear. No, I would prefer not to see shorts and a tee shirt and would like to see some people dressed as we will be(so that WE don't feel out of place!!), but I would not be upset or insulted because they don't wear formal wear. As long as they are presentable, to each his own!!!

My experiences are solely from cruises on the Magic where the restaurant is Topsiders, (it's counterpart on the Wonder is Beach Blanket). It is my understanding, from this board, that at dinner they place white tablecloths on the tables, you order from a menu and you are served by a waiter. The food found there is basically the same as what is being served in the more formal dining rooms only in a more casual atmosphere. I believe that they set-up a salad bar also if I am not mistaken. It's suggested you leave a tip after the meal since you wouldn't likely have the same waiter there nightly like you would if you were on the regular rotational dining. This may be a new or trial thing they are trying since I read about this here within the last couple of months.

Michigander, sorry you have taken this so personally. If you choose not to post here again you'll miss out on alot of useful information. This is a discussion board after all and no one is going to agree on everything, every time.

The dinner option is not available on the Wonder, at least it never was offered on any of the 4 times we have been aboard. It was strictly breakfast and lunch buffets served there.
It would be a nice option though if they were to have it availabe at dinner too.
It is absolutely true that everyone has their own opinions on things and they are entitled to them.
Sometimes people seem to be deliberately rude though.
I very much enjoy this board because of the friendly, even playful at times, non combative nature of it. I would never let one bad apple keep me away from all of the good ones.

Just read the past posts and I had to put my 2 cents in. Personally I don't REALLY like to be told what to wear, and I may forgo a dinner in the rotation one night so that I can just wear my shorts, BUT I spent all this money for a trip, personally, I think it will be nice to get dressed up a little. As soon as dinner is over though, ITS BACK TO MY STREET CLOTHES. I absolutely do not care what anyone else is wearing. My first cruise, my hubby and I spent a fortune on dress clothes to find 95 percent of the people dining with us wearing shorts and tee shirts. So, whatever, you don't have to wear a tux or a gown, just dress like your going to a party (in a hall ). And I wonder what happens when people walk in with shorts, I bet they let them stay. Anyone know?

Correct, sillysmom. Disney doesn't practice height discrimination...

sillysmom, I have never tried to go to the dining room in shorts (and I never would) but I think that they will let you in if you do wear shorts. On a formal night at Tritons I saw everything from tuxes to blue jeans, so I think they pretty much let you in no matter how you come dressed.

Buckaroo's Dad, I just love your sense of humour. One of your posts is guaranteed to make me chuckle for a long time. I think you would fit into our family perfectly, you have a similar style.

michigander, don't let someone like that drive you away from something you like. They only do it on the boards to make themselves feel important and powerful, because they can't out in the real world.

Everyone else should just remember that THIS particular question will always be here and everyone will always have differing opinions and to each his own.
