Dress Code

I have heard that Disney is somewhat picky about what is acceptable to wear in the parks, and that they will actually ask people to change. Is this just for risque' type things, or is there a "dress code" for the parks that we should be aware of?

good rule of thumb is, dont wear anything you wouldn't wear in front of your grandma/mother:D

I have seen thongs at BB, not the kind that go on you feet, so I wonder it they really have a dress code or if it is urban myth

from what I was told by management, thongs are not aloud in the disney water parks.... I never saw it personal enforced, but i'm sure people have and will be asked to cover up.

For the most part, you just have to use common sence while dressing... be mindful that there are alot of children in the parks...

DH and I just returned from 9 day trip to Disney and were appalled at some of the pieces of clothing that people were wearing or allowed to wear in the parks. One woman, who was with her children, had a shirt that read "MOTHER F_ _ _ ER!" (completely spelled out) and another 13-14 year old had a shirt that read "Porn star in training". . .yet another strange siting - an older male had a shirt with a cartoon picture of a topless woman with a thong that was an advertisement for some stripper club. Disney should really have some strict enforcement of a dress code because I thought these were more than inappropriate; it was just plain classless. Apparently, as of right now, there is no dress code that I know of (obviously):

heh, well, I've never had a prob... I admit some things are too obscene, but I wear a lot of black, & punk & gothy-like things so It's not too bad.... especially with my blue hair.

Blue hair and black clothing is your choice....although I wouldn't wear it doesn't mean it's "tasteless". I have a problem with the women (they sure aren't ladies) who are wearing tops that their breasts are falling out of. Or shorts so short that their butts are literally hanging out. Or T-shirts with graphic "sex" acts or obscenities or nudity - that is completely tasteless and those are the types of things that should be prohibited. I'm not a prude and if someone wants to wear short shorts fine..... but when I'm stuck staring at their butt that's where I draw the line. I wish Disney did a better job of monitoring this.

I can't believe that Disney would allow shirts with profane sayings or pictures on them. DH owns several that are somewhat "raunchy". They would never be packed for a trip to Disney. NEVER. There is a time and place for everything. Disney is family oriented.

There was another thread awhile back where a man was a little aggitated because he was asked to put a shirt on his toddler while in the Magic Kingdom.

I completely agree with you all, I don't like standing in line for a ride with some half-naked chick right in front of me. I mean really, people should wear decent clothing. The saddest thing I've seen happened on my last trip... This lady (about 24-25) was wearing shorts so short her, well, cheeks were exposed. And what made it worse, they had "mickey" across the back side....

I went to WDW a time or two back when I was younger, prekids time. I know it was a long time ago but I still managed to remember some of it :D

It seems to me that the dress went down hill. I remember before we went for the first family trip almost four years, my husband was making sure the children were dressed appropriate. Nice clothes, not quite Sunday clothes but good clothes. Well, we were quite surprised once we walked into the park. Short shorts, flip flops, small shirts, half naked kids in the water fountains (now that was sometime ago), obscene gestures on clothing, and then some. I could not believe people would allow their kids to go dressed that way and then I realized that adults were dressed this way. I was shocked to say the least. We dress casual in the parks every time we go. I shouls probably say conservatively casual. Jeans, mid length shorts for the girls if they like, and a basic T-shirt. Usually a Disney shirt. :smooth:

I think it's just the lack of morals in our society. No one seems to have self respect anymore. And dare I say that it's NOT self expression. You should express your self appropriately, as in a time and place for everything. Disney is not the time or place for being half naked or for the obscene clothing worn by some.

May I also say that CM's play a part in this also. Example:
my DD who is 15 likes to express herself and went through a Gothic type period where she wanted to wear all black all the time. We were at WDW and she had an outfit on that was a comprimise. We were on Barnstormer and the CM who sensed, I suppose, that my husband and I did not completely approve had decided to hold up the ride to inform my husband and myself about the Gothic community. This CM was very insistant that I should encourage her rather than let the phase play out. I know the other guests were not happy about waiting while we had a discussion. I was outraged, but I have a high tolerance so I said little to nothing. We were soon on our way. I was quite mad but quickly put it behind because I was determined to have fun that day. MY DD is now onto other things and is in ROTC and wears cami's when ever allowed.

I really wish Disney would inforce the dress code. I'd sign a petition! I'd write a letter! People count, especially in numbers!
Hhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Gone Disney

Please do not flame me for this...but

I totally agree about blatant obscenities or thong bathig suits not being allowed.
However, teenagers & young adults are just following the fashions that are in style and those half shirts and low rise shorts and pants are what's "in" .
I think it is hard for disney to say exactly what is appropriate to wear in the parks ....because what some are wearing is what is in style.
Now, I'm not saying that I approve....but I think people should be allowed freedom of expression as long as certain body parts are not being exposed or they are not wearing obscene sayings .

Not intended as a flame, so please don't take it that way...

I think your last sentence perfectly illustrates the problem. EVERYONE has his/her own perception of what is and is not appropriate. We've all seen people, whether at WDW or elsewhere, that make you think to yourself "what is he/she thinking!!!"

The best solution is for Disney to publish a dress code and ENFORCE IT. Enforcement is the toughest part. Between bus/tram drivers, security staff and the CMs at the gate, each guest probably interacts with a half-dozen CMs before entering the park. And when in the park they are EVERYWHERE. Certainly they do have a policy against profane or grossly inappropriate clothing--it's just a matter of finding someone willing to address it.

Thank you for not flaming !!! lol

But that is exactly it....what is appropriate to one may not be appropriate to someone else.

I'm just making the point that it would be hard for disney to set a dress code that would make everyone happy

I don't see why. I mean if it's THAT hard to make everyone happy- then how do they enforce dress codes at school? At work? etc? I mean don't THEY have a right to express themselves or wear the cool "in style" clothes also?
Ofcourse not.
And WDW can also enforce dress codes if they wanted to also. Disney is a place for children, of ALL ages, not for hoochy mamas to show their butts or boobs or have profane language on shirts/etc. That's ridiculous and should be stopped. If they can do it at water parks here- they can do it there. If they can do it at Six Flags over Texas- they can do it there. Period.

OH and btw- I'm really looking forward to seeing a lot of "bodies"- not! I'm sure it will be quite different in Aug/Sept than it was on my previous trips in Dec and Jan. It's going to be hot so I imagine a lot of people will be practically naked. I'm so looking forward to it. (said sarcastically)

ok, here lies the problem

sorry...I didn't mean to debate this quite so much.

anyway...what may look appropriate on one person.....you may feel may not be appropriate on another.

for example....i am full-figured...not necessarily heavy just curvy...the same tank top a smaller girl would wear would just look cute....however on me...it may be considered a little sexy...

does disney then not let me wear the tank and someone else can?

how do they set up the rules???

As far as setting dress codes at schools and at work.....these are technically businesses...whether it be an office or the business of learning.

At wdw ...you are on vacation

To be honest...I don't want someone telling me what I can wear on vacation.

I like to wear tanks and shorts and mini skirts and sundresses.....but I don't consider myself a hoochy mama.

I also agree with previous posters about obscene sayings not being allowed or thongs at the water parks.....but to be honest I would rather see thongs than guys in speedos.....and you really can't ban men from wearing speedos

BibbidyBobbidyBoo,

I will be there around the same time you will be...and I honestly hope I don't offend you with my dress....however I do wear a bikini at the pool...and I do wear tanks and shorts...although you won't be seeing my butt in them

ok, I promise I won't post anymore...but that is just my opinion

Oh now come on. I live in Texas- you think I don't see bikinis and tank tops and shorts? HAHAHA Only about 11 months out of the year on shorts atleast. LOL That's all.....

That's NOT what I was talking about at all.

Oh and btw- I also listed water parks here and Six Flags- those would be considered vacation/pleasure places also- not a business or learning establishments- they STILL have dress codes at all those places here. I guess Texas has figured out a way to do dress codes and the people just have to be happy with it OR NOT COME... stay home with their vulgar language on their shirts or thong swimsuits. :)

Interesting thread here....and hopefully we can get through it respectfully and without turning it into a huge debate..

I do believe that some of you have made very valid points here.. I think a dress code could be enforced just as you would enforce someone wearing appropriate clothing to go to a fine restaurant.. You post the dress code and if you do not comply, you do not get in..

Personally, I love that Disney is casual. I usually wear shorts, tee shirt and sneakers or sandals unless going somewhere fancy for dinner than I dress more appropriately....I also think that is my taste in clothing so I cannot inflict my style on others.... Disney has to set the standards and enforce them if they do so..

I don't think shirts with obscenties should be allowed, however like others have said different people have different ideas about what is appropriate dress. You've got to remember that WDW is an international destination. What may not be acceptable to you may be perfectly acceptable in Spain...

I think expressing ones self or wearing most anything that is "in style" at the moment is okay. I think the issue really lies when you have people who wear t-shirts with blatant obscenities on them-- we all now which words are considered to be "bad". Any shirt that clearly depicts a sex act. Any outfit that is revealing a portion of ones anatomy that should be revealed. I mean if I can see the actual cheek hanging out theres a problem. If they are just short-shorts, then that is at that person's discretion. Same thing with low cut pants and 1/2 shirts. If the person want to wear them and I am not seeing a "private" part, then that is their right.

I think (personally), people should be allowed to wear what they want within reason. I mean you wouldn't wear the thong bikini to Church or hopefully to a family reunion (do you really want your male family members gawking!?!) Don't wear it to a family theme water park either. Save it for a friend's pool party or the beach in Daytona. Would you really wear shorts that resemble a thong going up your backside to your corporate meeting. No, not that you should wear a suit to Disney, but it comes down to being appropriate. Just like anyone with an ounce of dignity wouldn't walk into church streaming a mouthful of curse words.

It all comes down to exercising good taste and judgement.

I think people are forgetting that Disney is an "amusement park" for young and old. It is not church, or the boardroom. I think that any vulger language or images that depict sex acts should be banned and I don't think that would be hard to enforce at the gate.

We live in a free country. If and when (hopefully not of course) my 5 year old is standing behind a girl with her cheeks hanging out, if he inquires I will simply say that is her choice and that that is what makes each of us an individual, it may not be a good choice in "our opinion", but that is just that---"our opinion" and hopefully he will grow up to accept the world as it is, not perfect and we can't all agree all the time.

It is Disney- I will have a blast no matter what I see. And so will my children. Don't dwell on the little things, there is so much worse out there to worry about.

We don't have to like it, and I agree with all of you on this thread, some things are not appropriate. Just move on...........

IMHO:D :)
