Dress Code Question

Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill! Yes, people have been asked to remove t-shirts that say "Prepare to Die!" on a plane. Yes, people have been asked to turn around t-shirts in WDW. Could it happen to the OP's daughter? I guess it might. Given the types of t-shirts I have seen at WDW (and I did google the image) I would venture to say that she'll be OK. But I would say that the she should be ready for some Nervous Nellie to pitch a fit.

SqueakBC, I would lay it all out for your DD and allow her to make the choice to risk being asked to change or not.

obviously there are questions about the hoodie - while it is just an image from a TV show - it is an offensive image and to many - an offensive show - (although I watch it) but the question is would you let your toddler or 6 year old watch the show? if the answer is no - then why would you want to expose them to any images from the show? WDW is full of little kids - think of what you would want your little kid exposed to and then go from there

Sorry if this post is in the wrong section (couldn't find an area that seemed to cover it), but we have a question regarding dress code at the WDW parks.

I've found the WDW dress code, which reads:

Examples of unacceptable attire includes:

  • Clothing displaying offensive messages/language
  • Adult costumes or clothing that can be viewed as a costume (children under age 10 are excluded)
  • Clothing made with offensive material, (ie transparent)
  • Clothing that is excessively torn
  • Clothing which exposes inappropriate portions of the body such as string bikini tops, G-strings, bikini bottoms, etc.
  • Guests wearing wedding attire are discouraged from entering the Theme Parks.

Our eldest daughter is a fan of the tv show Sons of Anarchy and has zip-up hoodie with one of the logos on the back. If you've ever seen the show, you'll know that the logo is a grim reaper holding an automatic weapon. It is, however, a hugely popular program and it's merchandise is widely available. I've seen many t-shirts from various rock bands that I think could be deemed equally or perhaps even more offensive, but such things are obviously in the eye of the beholder.

Our questions are: does anyone think there's a chance that if she wore it she might be in violation of the dress code? Do you think she'd be stopped at the gate and not be allowed to wear it in? Has anyone seen any SOA merchandise being worn on at any of the parks or resorts?

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but it's her favourite hoodie and her teenage grumpiness comes out strong every we time suggest that she might want to leave it behind. Perhaps we're just being unnecessarily overly cautious?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I am pretty sure that would not be appropriate to Disney due to the automatic weapon in the logo. The show is not appropriate for young children obviously so it only stands to reason that material my be deemed that way as well. I would call and ask to be sure, but I would expect a no. Maybe you could find a different hoodie that she could break in before you go.

I know my DD is still younger, but she likes to wear Jack stuff from NBC. Would she consider that?

And what is she to do with the shirt if she is not allowed into the park with it? Throw it out? If the OP and her family are not driving to the parks (I'm unclear on that one) then that, or taking the shirt back to the resort, will be the only options. Which is why I wondered earlier if the daughter is old enough to go back to the resort alone, and then back to the parks. If not, it shouldn't even be a discussion.

the daughter is 18 and old enough to suffer the consequences if her choices.

Why take such a silly risk? Leave the sweater at home and offer her the option of purchasing a new one at the parks. It's better to be safe than sorry.

yeah- not a good choice for flying or Disney. And grumpy mood or not- if you tell her no, then the answer is no.

i'd be pretty upset if my kids had to stare at that while waiting in line if she was in front of me... we're at Disney for family fun and magic- not scary stuff and guns (and we are gun owners, but we don't flaunt guns or violence, etc)... I know that's not what it's about for HER but it still would be seen that way to young children.

Yeah, I agree. As well as the fact that Disney is all about magic and having fun, there will be people from all over the world there. We're from the UK and gun culture is more of a US thing than a UK one IMO. All my son knows about guns is that they are used for killing people with. I'm one of those unpopular parents who censors things my child is exposed to as much as poss and I wouldn't want him seeing that. We don't even allow him to have toy guns. People will say I'm wrong but it's my responsibility as a parent to do what I consider to be the best for my son. I certainly would NOT find that to be appropriate. Sorry!

Helpful feedback all. Thanks for the time. We've discussed it at length with DD and she's read the posts, and she really has no intention of scaring anyone or wearing anything inappropriate. She appreciates the different perspectives, and hoodie will be left at home for sure.

I think that was the right choice :thumbsup2. No reason to risk being embarrassed.
