Dress code at Disney...

There's another thread on the boards regarding dress codes, specifically whether adults can wear costumes, that reminded me of something that I saw during Gay Days so I thought I would ask here.

On Sunday, at DCA, we were walking down by It's Tough to be a Bug. I looked up and walking in front of us was an older couple pushing a stroller (obviously their grandchild). On the back of the woman's blouse, she had written with a magic marker "And God said...marriage is between a man and a woman".
The more I looked at it and the woman, the madder I got. :furious: I almost ran her down, but settled for just saying she was an ignorant bigot when we passed by them. She didn't say anything, but gave me a dirty look. I just smiled and walked on...I felt better.

Anyway, it was my understanding that those sort of sayings are against the dress code. I had heard that religious and political messages, along with profanity and so forth were against the dress code and grounds for expulsion from the park. Does anybody know if this is correct?
I should have asked a cast member immediately. It was quite obvious that she had written it by hand on her blouse, maybe even after she had already entered the park. I hope she had a truly wonderful day being surrounded by gays all day long.

I think that if you had mentioned it to a cast member she might have been told to turn it inside out or cover it up. No guarantees, but worth a try.

Rather than get angry with her, you could have used it as an educational experience. Ask her if she could show you those exact words from God. Because if she can't perhaps she would need the additional enlightenment that lying is against the 10 commandments. So she would be in real trouble.

I also get really peeved at ignorance and the people that think they are here to "speak the truth", no matter if it is true or not.

Oh, wait, you could have also said, well, that may be true in California, but it sure isn't in Spain, Canada and Massachusetts. (There is at least one other European country which allows gay marraiges, but I am sorry I don't remember which one.)

Good ideas...I'll have to remember them for next time. I don't tend to think that fast on my feet, so none of this dawned on me until afterward. :confused3

It just made me furious that this arrogant woman takes it upon herself to tell everybody what "God" said. She's probably also one of those women who gossips about other people incessantly.

Oh well...it's over and done with....now back to happy thoughts of WDW next year. :cool1:

I didn't realize there was any dress code which forbid religious or political messages. I don't like the idea of such rules. I say let the bigots where their bigoted clothing so we can spot them, and let the rest of us where our own political/religious messages if we so choose.

I've always thought having an inquisitive child around when people are acting as such might be fun. When my GF and I were in Disney on a bus we met these two kids who said everything that came to mind. The first words they said to us were "are you two married?" GF responded "not yet, but maybe someday" and they said, with a disgusted look, "that's gross!" Things went on from there with them asking if we were girlfriends and questioning whether GF was a girl or a boy. The parents just sat back and let them ask away. I've always thought if we have an inquisitive child maybe once s/he can read s/he will notice such things and ask about them. I think an appropriate answer might be, "Well Honey why do you go ask the nice lady why she thinks your mommy shouldn't be able to have any legal rights to you" and send her off so such people can be embarassed in front of everyone around them. (Of course, this could be horribly traumatic given anyone bigoted enough to wear that on their shirt isn't going to bother trying to be nice to a little kid.)

I think the parks only have a rule against profanity/indecency. I think the woman's hand written shirt falls under ignorance, and there is no way Disney can prevent that.

I wish all inbred arrogant mindless drone bigots would wear shirts like that. It'd be so much easier to spot them. As for educating them, I'm on vacation and there is a time and place for that. Much like there's a time and place for people like her with her idiotic message.

WDW used to be quite rigorous about "policing" the sort of sayings allowed on shirts, and not allowing certain ones to be worn in the park. They used to be quite blunt on bathing suits on adult women too. None were allowed. I saw them turn away a young woman in a bikini top and shorts one time.

I've seen them refuse entry to people wearing provocative sayings on their shirts until the shirt was replaced (directing them to the shop outside the gates) or turned inside out.

It seems they no longer do this with any amount of consistency, or perhaps at all. The only thing I do see them still do is request that men put their shirts back on, if they've taken them off. Shoes/footwear too.

I've seen some pretty objectionable sayings on t-shirts in the parks. However, I do recognize that "objectionable" is totally subjective and my version of it may not offend you at all.

I can't decide if I prefer the "old way" or not. I don't like over policing, and I'm guessing that WDW eased up because someone probably legally challenged them. :confused3

I think her punishement was that she probably got viewed as an idiot by other park goers through out the day.

I just want to put it out there that I think it sick and I have to agree with you as I was there during gay days with my mom, as I am bi, I did see somethings that really upset me. I saw in the Muppets 3d vision there was this little screen which displayed how much longer we had to wait for a show, and on the screen it started talking about how marriages were made to be between a man and a woman. I actually threw somethign at the screen and walked out. Obviously somone was having a bit of fun and it was really upsetting.

Like give me a break here, you dont see me going around and trying to put you down in other ways because your straight.

If I were you I woulda run that woman down or at least thrown some pop corn at her, or smacked her in the back of the head with a churro.

I was also in the womans washroom down by Cruella Du Villes trailor in DCA at the Hollywood back lot, and there were these 2 girls who came in wearing red jackets, but on the back of one girls jacket it said " I KISS BOYS", and the other jacket said "SO DO I". I started to grind my teeth and it took every ounce not to say anything.

what is it with the DCA park? No wonder its flopping. No one including employees can respect the people who walk the park.

Honestly, what did you see offensive about the red jackets? I would count that as similar to some of the clothing I've seen at Gay Day at WDW, "what gave you your first clue", "Yes, I am", or "My team needs a pitcher" (with an appropriate baseball player photo)...they are not attacking the person reading them, they as stating facts about the person wearing them.

If I saw that kind of message at Muppet Vision, I would have reported that to Disney guest relations immediately.

And "attacking" the elderly woman would have gotten you arrested for assault, like another poster said, her "punishment" would have been the rolling eyes and disgusted head shakes of everyone she encountered that day.

Maybe, with you being from Canada, you don't see that sort of thing often, but those jackets the shirt were pretty mild by US standards. If you are saying the two girls were Cast Members, and the jackets were part of their costume, I would have read their name badges and reported them to guest relations immediately. Disney does not allow CMs to alter/modify their costumes.

1. I did report about muppets as it was sick

2. I woudlnt have actually attacked the lady, but I woulda made a comment as im to blunt.

3. Just cause im in Canada doesnt mean we dont have our share of gay or lesbien couples. There are LOTS of them, and I think its just great, and the standards for clothing I agree was tame, but at the same time I dont walk around with my friends wearing something on if im straight or not, woopie your straight who cares? Im bi, who cares? I dont run around the streets screaming or making a point of letting everyone know it.

I didnt even wear red on gay days. Who cares if I am bi, or full out lesbien. Im proud of who I am anyways.

You misunderstood my point about being from Canada. GLBT persons have more equal rights in many parts of Cananda than they do in the US. I was saying, being from Canade, you probably don't see as many people protesting against gay rights as we do here in the US, and by "protest" standards the shirt and jackets were really quite tame.

What was your response from guest relations when you reported the muppet vision signage?

No im sorry you are definately right that we have more rights here. I just wish everyone was as lucky. Its such a battle over something so rediculous. I mean even the national anthem for the states talks about freedom and such, and its like well why cant I be free to be who I want? Same as anywhere really.... but anyways as for the guest relations they appologized repetedly and said that they would get onto it immediately and look into who was working in that area at the time I mentioned and would make sure that that person was delt with. I was happy! :) All I could do was make aware. It wouldnt have mattered if I got a verbal appology from the person who typed the message on the muppet vision screen, cause we dont know who did it number one, and second of all, he would have to do a verbal appology to all those who it implied.
