Dress Code a Poll for the Masses

I voted for door #2. I enjoy dressing up, but the cost of formal wear for myself, DH, DS & DD would certainly add up quickly. We are taking a 4-day cruise next month so I don't have need of formal wear yet. If we end up booking a 7-day cruise, I may have to reconsider.....

Definitely a number 3. Feel strongly I should wear what I want. We are only on the 3 night trip - 10 0f us - 4 kids. I will probably wear a pants suit to Triton - have no idea what the others will wear. Gave up cruising on big ships because of the formal nights etc. Have been on the Newport clipper ships which had an informal dress code. Everyone should be able to do their own thing - IMO. Of course I do not think shorts or bathing suits are OK but if a man does not want to wear a tie why should he on vacation. If it bothers you just don't look around.

A definite #1 - just off the Western and I was amazed how many people either chose to ignore the "formal" / "semi-formal" night attire or perhaps they just didn't know what those terms mean (although I seriously doubt that).

We dress up on Formal and Semi-Formal nights and dress in resort casual on the other nights.

I like the old-school cruise tradition of asking the guests to dress-up for dinner. It gives the vacation experience a dimension of civilized classiness, if only for a couple of hours, before we resume the psychotic craziness of cramming in as much fun and mayhem as we can get away with.

I am a definate #1 also. IMHO it kind of bums me out when I see people at dinner on semi formal and formal nights in shorts or tshirts, it ruins the ambiance . I understand its your money and your vacation so do as you please just please don't flame me.

I agree 100%... if you want to see Mickey AND wear your shorts or jeans to dinner, book yourself a room at Pop Century, eat in the food court, and enjoy yourself.

either way looks like dressing up is still the way to go for at least those 2 dinners and they only take place on the 7 nighters or longer. So a Tux and Jacket it will be.

I would definitely dress up if it was formal or semi-formal night, because that is what we are supposed to do. Do I enjoy dressing up? Not at all. However, I love seeing my girls all dressed up, plus it gives them another chance to wear those beautiful prom dresses that they never get to wear once prom is over (one of them has prom tomorrow night and her dress will be worn on our next cruise). As for my husband, he does not enjoy dressing up at all when he is on vacation, but he will wear what is expected of him. We are self-employed and he works anywhere from 12-16 hours every single day (7 days a week) and the only time he gets to relax is on vacation.

I will admit that the reason I hate dressing up, is that when I was growing up, my father was an executive with a big company. As kids, we were always expected to dress up and be the picture-perfect family. We were never allowed to wear jeans, and to this day, my mother has never owned a single pair...I personally live in jeans and would wear them everyday to work if I could. So in all honesty, my aversion to dressing up is probably some kind of rebellion from my childhood!

I definitely vote for #1 but I wish I had other occasions to wear what I will be buying for the cruise....It's so darned expensive! And the kids grow up so quickly that they end up wearing it once or twice and the clothes don't fit anymore.


DH doesn't really like to dress up, but he will in order to have a great family picture! I keep showing them to him and he thinks they will make wonderful souvenirs.

My DD's also love getting morer use out of their prom/social function dresses (me too!!)....my DD just had a dance the other night and plans on wearing that dress again on our cruise in June....they both have gotten great use of those "dressy" dresses over the years!!!

I voted #1 but only because we really enjoy getting all prettied-up and the photos are fab! It really doesn't bother me if other choose not to. To each his/her own!

Me and the DH being the country folks that we are, I would have to say that I definitely chose #1! I mean I do have to dress up for work everyday, but it's always fun to get DRESSED up!! I do love my jeans, but I also agree with some of the other posters about the fact that it's nice to have that "formal" atmosphere. I also don't mind doing the "resort casual" for the other nights. The only thing that I don't like about the dress code is just the fact that I have to pack more...but that's solely my decision and I chose to do that!

We definitely vote 1 - this is the whole reason we want to do a cruise. Dont get the chance at home to dress up. Really do not think it costs that much to be formal and if you look around can pick up some very smart gear at a reaonable price. I definitely would not spend a lot of money on clothes that would never get worn again so am shopping around.

We want to go along with DCL. Since they call it Formal Night, we'll dress formally. It's only for a couple of hours, and it creates the elegance that makes the night extra-special.

Also, I have two sons, and I want to teach them at an early age how to dress properly. If they receive an invitation to a Formal dance, they'll know not to wear khakis and a Polo shirt.

I hope your way of thinking is contagious. Years ago, my sister and her DH and two DS sailed on Princess when dressing for formal night was a REQUIREMENT to dine in the dining rooms. (Her sons were 10 and 7 at the time.) She complained that even though she enjoyed it, she wished the didn't enforce it because her DH and sons really disliked it. Well gee, isn't that too bad! Fast forward 20 years later, neither son and DH still don't own a suit. The oldest son recently married, and resented having to rent a tux! (Says something about how he's matured?)

I agree 110%! My family falls in the 3 category. We will dress nice and appropriate - no bathing suits, shorts or jeans; but we will be comfortable. We are there to have a great time and we hope everyone else does the same.
