Dreams come true...WDW 8/30-9/16

Great update once again. I am going to have to give Cali Grill another try. That Sushi looks wonderful. Our last experience was really bad. Must have been an off day I guess. Your boys are just adorable. I love the dessert creations. I would have signed up for the gift cards thing also. LOL.

:woohoo: we got video too! Great update jay, California Grill is on my list of places I want to try and your review just made me want to go even more. I'd also like to know what time your ADRs were, that's so cool to watch Wishes from there!

I was pleasantly (is that spelled right - it looks funny?) surprised to hear about the CMs at the Contemporary giving you a ride back to the GF - I thought customer service like that was long gone!

I know I have already said this about a million times but I am amazed at how many special and magical things have happened to you on this trip. WDW is just the best! :cloud9:
I was amazed as well! You should have seen me...I must have looked like a frog trying to catch flies with my mouth hanging open all of the time.

The number of awesome experiences doesn't surprise me one bit! What you "send out into the world" is what you get back; and jaycns' family sends the happy, loving family vibe out and that's what the world (in this case Disney World!) is giving back to them. :cloud9:
What a very sweet thing to say! Thanks! But we are no different then most families I would guess. I think WDW has a way with bringing out the happiest sides of people!! :thumbsup2

Scarey about the monorail closing but I suppose after the last one ran - they just shut the gate - it probably was at some station down the line at exactly the right hour.

You shall have your care package, Jay. I'll be at the world for almost 3 weeks in January. I always stock up - but ration the bombs to one a week as well, they're so expensive. We love Basin's shampoo bars, too.

When is the baby due?

PS. I so agree with you, Laura!
You are right Linda, I never even thought of that! They need to list the closing time as the time the last monorail runs...either that or I need to leave a better time cushion.:rolleyes1 ;)

SHAMPOO BARS?! Oh Linda, NOW YOU ARE IN TROUBLE!! I am gonna tell dh on you!! It is all your fault that I now need to try yet another product!!:rotfl: Do tell more about these shampoo bars...they sound intriging!

The little kicker is due Jan. 27...however, my doctor has warned me not to expect a late January baby...most likely he will be born sometime between Christmas and mid January. The later the better...but we shall see how things are going as the time draws closer.

I am so excited to have another little baby to spoil!! ;) I love little ones!! :wizard: Little ones "bring good things to life". ;)

PM me if you have a chance with an update about B.

Again fab post. I'd never considered the Califonia Grill before but it sounds and looks great. What time was your ADR for, just thinking along the lines of being able to watch fireworks after dinner?
Our ADR was about two hours before the fireworks started. I think it was a bit "too early" however, I had read that was the way to do it here on the DIS. They said you might have to wait a bit for a request of a table "windowside". They also warned that those who get seated before you might dwaddle over dinner (much the way our family did) in order to retain their window seats. Personally I think that about an hour and a half before fireworks time would be better. Time for a leisurely meal but yet you wouldn't feel like you were taking too long (at least I felt that way). Being as the nightly fireworks times can vary, it's good to check before making an ADR.

Also, if you don't get a window seat, you can always go out on to the observation deck and watch the fireworks from there. I think it would be a lot of fun to watch a MNSSHP, MVMCP or P&PP special fireworks from that vantage point. I am hoping to be able to plan that during our next trip. The whole being eye level with most of the fireworks thing was a real treat.

Cant wait to hear what happens next!
I will post another update tomorrow (or the next day) at the latest! Thanks for sticking with the report!

And the magical moments keep coming! It's nice to see that customer service is still alive and well in some places.
That was awesome service. I have NO idea what we would have done if they wouldn't have helped us out. It was NOT our brightest moment.

Our food was really good. I was surprised that we enjoyed it so much. I MUST return to have a serving of sushi for myself! I was so jealous of "Aladdin's"!! I want my own sushi!! I better watch out...no sushi for me for a few months yet...so I don't want to start craving it...uh oh...it may be too late!! ;) SUSHI!! YUM!

I had read about a few not so great meals there. I wonder if they have improved or if it was just good luck. I hope it's a real improvement for good. I would love to have another meal that is so off the charts delicious!

pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: This is certainly the trip of "magical" moments!! pixiedust: The boys & their hot dogs!! funny!!! :lmao: :lmao:
I know. Hot dogs...who knew they were the greatest food ever created?! I guess I missed out on that knowledge myself.

Dh said they probably looked at our account and saw how much money we had spent that day (between the cake, the dinner, the arcade and my Basin spending spree I would say we did a good job on the spending front) and figured they better get us back so we could get some sleep and spend like that the next day.:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

My guess is they just couldn't have guests sleeping in the lobby.

I was amazed as well! You should have seen me...I must have looked like a frog trying to catch flies with my mouth hanging open all of the time.

 You all seem to be having the dream vacation that we all strive for. I love how all the CM's have been so nice to you and your family and gone out of there way to make your experience and stay a special one.:goodvibes

A year or so ago, we were at Disney for 10 days, and DD ate a hot dog for just about every meal!!! She was hooked on them!

This past July, we were there for two weeks, and just about every day, she had chicken nuggets. She loves them!!!

Its so funny what kids will get hooked on while on vacation! I guess they figure to eat it while you can, since they won't get hot dogs (or chicken nuggets) every day at home!!!

Great pictures and a video too! :woohoo:

How fabulous that Disney took such good care of you and how lucky to have met such a sweet and fun CM! Your trip is just sprinkled with magic and goodness!! :wizard:

Just a quick question for you. Since you seem to have stayed at the 3 resorts we are comparing for next years trip which do you prefer?

CR - We are leaning toword this CL MK view
POLY - LV CL
GF - Sugarloaf

I reallly have no interest in GF but my DH does. I would love Poly but no hot tub again DH wants this. I think CR fits our bill but I am wondering if atmosphere is lacking due to being a convention hotel.

Thanks in advance for your input. Liz.

Hi Jay - by your posts, it seems like you've had some stuff going on so I hope all is well...looking forward to the next installment!!
:)

I really think if you go in knowing that no matter what happens you will have a special magical vacation...then you will. I guess I just keep going back every year knowing the magic will still be there alive and well...and it is. It's a lot like believing in Santa Claus...if you believe, he will come! ;)

 My two youngest boys would so admire your daughter's WDW menu choices!! I bet you are right...if they know it is not happening at home, they indulge much more on vacation (same with adults too). I guess two weeks worth of hot dogs never really killed anyone...however, I bet the nutrition police were a hot dog or two away from arresting dh and I for allowing the hot dog fest of 2007! ;) :rotfl:

Great pictures and a video too! :woohoo:

I am so glad they helped us out. I don't know what we would have done! Moral of the story...never leave your resort without at least cab fare back in the event it is needed due to unforeseen complications.

I am glad that we had the monorail mix up...without it, we would have missed out on meeting such a truly delightful lady, that CM totally embodied the word fun!
Hi Jay - by your posts, it seems like you've had some stuff going on so I hope all is well...looking forward to the next installment!!
:)
Yes, we have had a pretty rough few weeks of it here. Dh injured himself a few weeks ago and we thought he was doing better (it was his back). But the problem intensified last week and an MRI showed that he has a bulging disc in his back (and it's pinching his sciatic nerve). He has an appointment with a neurosurgeon next week. Hopefully, his visits to the therapist/chiropractor will help him mend completely! He is really hoping against having to have back surgery. However, at this point, that might be the lesser of the two evils as he currently is having trouble walking. Between him being laid up with that and me being on bedrest...you can imagine the state of affairs. :rolleyes1

The baby is still measuring small for his gestational age, so I have been in and out of the doctor's office more times then I can count. They think things are starting to look a bit better and that is great news!!:cloud9: Hopefully the lag in growth was due to a bout with the stomach flu and the stress as of late. We should know more on that count come Monday. Another round of blood work, ultrasounds and non-stress tests. Fun.:upsidedow

On top of all of that, my dad has had a few setbacks recently...but he is still hanging in there. It just seems like whenever he takes a step or two forward he has a few more he is forced to take back...but complicated recoveries are often like that, so we just keep looking at the big picture of how far he has come and that is an amazing feat!!

So, yes, things here have been a bit on the rough side...but we are pluggin' along! Not much choice but to do otherwise. ;) :thumbsup2 I figure when we make it through this period in our lives, I can surely wrangle another WDW trip out of it!!

Hope all is well with you and the family, Jay.
Thanks Linda!! The well wishes are very appreciated! I just have to brag on my little guys...they have been GREAT! I couldn't ever have asked for how amazing they have been throughout all of this. Whenever we need help (we being the two gimpy parents of the family) they are not only there...but show up with a smile. We are truly blessed to have such sweet, caring, helpful and good hearted boys!

Of the CR, the Poly and the GF, my favorite is the CR!! Actually the CR beats out all of the rest of the WDW resorts (just by a fraction of a hair with AKL...and on a different day I might say they were tied).

The Contemporary feels fun, "alive", like it's in the middle of the magic...at the same time...it feels very soothing and relaxing out in the pool or on the beach...the view of Bay Lake is exquisite. The rooms themselves are beautiful. Not over the top "themed" and they don't scream Disney, but they are gorgeous. The use of many textures vs. many colors is very relaxing.

I love the monorail running through the resort itself. The fun atmosphere of Chef Mickey's. The arcade. And if you go once the renovations of the food court are complete...you would have just as many food choices/quality as either of the other monorail resorts. Of course they each have their own specialty items (like Tonga Toast at Capt. Hook's YUM) but you can always hop a ride for breakfast, lunch or dinner if you like.

The pool area is nice. Again, not themed or over the top...but the quiet pool is right up to the shores of the lake basically. The pool bar is very easily accessible from either the main pool or the quiet pool (which are steps away from each other) and the hot tubs are both "in" the main pool area. One is tucked behind the slide area and the other is "out" in the pool itself (obviously still a different "pool" of water). Watching the nightly light parade on the water from either the beach or the quiet pool area) is very nice. They have hammocks and lounges on the beach. I also think the building itself is stunning at night. To pull up in a boat or look back from the beach, a hammock or the pool and see it glowing is amazing.

We stayed there for a week last year and had an amazing time. I wrote a trip report on our time there. Here is a link to that one: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1246511

The Poly was nice...but we didn't fall in love with it the same way we did the Contemporary...or even the Grand Floridian. I think it was more a case of personal taste and just having more "magical" times at the other resorts. It's not that I would "never" stay at the Poly again or that it wasn't a nice place to stay...I just like other monorail resorts better if that makes any sense. Maybe part of it was not having a hot tub to soak in! ;)

No matter which one you pick, I know you will have a great time. All three are really nice resorts. I think it's just more of a personal taste issue between the three of them.

And as far as the concierge lounges...the one at the Contemporary and the one at the Poly have much "better views". You can see the fireworks from either one. In the Sugarloaf Lounge at the GF you really have no view whatsoever (unless you count being able to see out the doors into the building). I think that lounge feels more like a bed and breakfast type atmosphere. Not bad. Just not "stunning" like floor to ceiling windows that are an MK view.

At the Contemporary you have to request MK view at the concierge level...so you might end up looking out at the lake...which honestly, is simply amazing in a more natural sense. I don't think you could go wrong with either view.

Let me know which one you end up choosing!! :cutie:

COMING UP NEXT: A day of relaxation at the Grand Floridian...with a surprise twist! ;)

I will try and post an update within the next few days. Things have just been a bit on the crazy side lately...but I think an update would be just what the doctor ordered! A chance to relive the magical times of our Disney trip!:goodvibes

Thanks for sticking with the report!!

Hey, I thought I'd chime in on the being pregnant and hubby having back surgery. I've been following your trips but have never posted. We're staying at AKL next month.

Anyway, my husband had back surgery four weeks before our third child was born. It really turned out nice as we got to spend two weeks together after she was born. But, anyway, he had to have it because of two ruptured disks and he has done excellent!!! I have to get onto him constantly about lifting way too much!! It was actually very stressful for me before he had it as he was in so much pain and couldn't walk. You should've seen me painting the baby's room when I was 8 months pregnant. Oh, and another pretty sight was us walking in the neurosurgeon's office. Picture me really big and him in so much pain!!! Instead of late 30s, we looked like 70 year olds. My husband had an MRI on Monday, seen the surgeon on Tuesday, and had the surgery on Wednesday!!! He was really bad off, had to have the surgery, but also we were trying to get him better so he could drive me home from the hospital. Thanks for writing such great reports. I feel like we're really going to enjoy AKL!!!

 Jay, I'm so happy to see you back! Being a mom, I can't turn off the mom-worry button even when it is an internet friend. Great to hear that the Little Prince is growing. I remember those non-stress tests well!! Hope you Dad does much better and that DH's back gets on the mend. Good boys you have!!

Exactly! Makes me want to hop a plane and fly right out to play grandma for a few weeks. You poor DEARS! :grouphug:

Your dinner at California Grill looks like it was amazing! I am seriously wishing that I had it booked for our December ADR's. I guess it's now on my "to-do" list......the list keeps growing! :rotfl:

That is wonderful that the CM was so kind to give your family a ride back to the GF. Only in Disney! :goodvibes

Looking forward to your next post...

Jay, I thought I'd chime in here with my families experience with bad backs. Several years ago I had a bulging disc that fragmented and was pushing on my sciatic nerve as well - I had a lovely pain that ran from tailbone down my left leg :scared1: Me, being the stubburn person that I am, put off surgery for months until I just couldn't stand it anymore - truth be told, I was terrified of surgery - anyway, I finally had it done and couldn't be happier with the results. It took about a week before it felt better, mostly because the nerve was so irritated, but once the pain went away it was gone. I haven't had any troubles since.

DH had a bulging disc in his neck so his pain was in his shoulder and down his arm. He had a single level fusion after the steriod shots didn't work, that was 2 years ago and he hasn't had any more problems.

Good luck to your DH, hope he gets to feeling better soon and doesn't need surgery, but if he does just know that both DH and I have had great results from ours!

Sorry to hear thing's have been a bit rough lately though it sound as if it's not taken the bounce out of you (maybe you should change your name to TiggerJay), your still sounding realy positive. I'll keep saying little prayers for the wee one, hopefully he'll soon be the big one (though not TOO big...:scared: ). With all that feet up time that the doc has advised for you and your DH you could start planning you next trip :surfweb: , maybe a wee pre trip report. I know that when things are getting a bit mental in our family I retreat for an hour or so of surfing and vacation planning and it helps cheer me up, it's kind of like the Dis is free therapy :rotfl: .

Anyway stay well and chin up  .
