Dreams come true...WDW 8/30-9/16

Sounds like you had a smashing day at Epcot, so sorry you hurt your ankle but I have a feeling that someone on high was trying to tell you something;). So glad you've backed up my idea about the Wishes Birthday cruise as long as we can get if booked it's now a definate.

You should come to Scotland at some point (pref in what we laughingly call the summer!!!). We have a truely stunning country and with all the castles and history you can't help but getting caught up in the romance of the place, if your boys are anything like my DD11 they'd be facinated with all the places to visit. I will take some pictures of my Scottish autumn for you....that is if it ever stops raining long enough:rotfl2:

Hi Jay!!
So sorry to hear about your ankle, but you KNOW it happened for a reason, right? As a former member of the "high risk pregnancy" brigade, I am SOOOOO glad you rented an ECV. That's karma for you, honey! :goodvibes

Love the CM with the hats. How special was that? Too cool.

Too bad you lost your memory card. (:rotfl: I almost forgot the word "card"! :rotfl: :lmao: ) Good thing it was a new card, but as a PP mentioned, those things are spendy!

Take care of yourself. Hope Dad's doing better.

I sure missed the pictures! Sorry you lost your memory card.

Jay, I can't believe this, but reading about you needing an ECV .... well, yesterday I went to my doctor for a check up after a huge amount of tests. As we went over everything, he told me that I would need a wheel chair or EVC while there. I felt a little bit bad about it, but after someone I "know" using one -- I think it will be just fine. Although adding $350 to our Disney expenses sort of sucks.

Those hot dogs are cracking me up! I remember my daughter ate hot dogs every day for nearly a year when she was four!! Kids are so great! :rotfl:

Sounds like a great day at Epcot (aside from that little mishap with your foot, of course!) What a wonderful surprise that CM gave your boys with the hats! It's like someone here said earlier, you reap what you sow and your family always takes the time to be kind and considerate to the CMs you come across and because of that good things befall you!

ETA: Too bad you lost your memory card - those things are expensive!! I have a little bit of memory on my camera, it won't hold a lot of pictures, maybe 20 - but it'll work in a pinch!
I think that "foot mishap" is the best thing that could have happened to me. I was SO stinkin' stubborn. What was I thinking? It was SOOOOO much easier on me with the ECV (most likely why the doctor told me to use one in the first place  ).

I have no idea for what reason that magic was sprinkled...but I will never forget that kindness. It's things like that interaction that keep us coming back year after year. I don't know of many employers who allow their employees to spread that sort of magic.

I just checked (after reading your post) I could have clicked a little button inside the battery/memory card slot opening area and I would have been able to record to the "hard drive" on the camera (but apparently there is only enough memory to store a few pictures...most likely just like yours. Of course, it would have come in handy had I known that then! ;) But, I am glad I know it now!! :thumbsup2 Thanks for the VERY HANDY clue!!

Oh boy! How NICE to come home to more installments! JAy, I don't know how we're going to survive once your trip report is done and we're not getting anymore updates on the progress of your family!

You mentioned your last vacation as a family of 5 which got me to thinking . . . what will you do as a family of six? Get two rooms? Join DVC?

Hope your dad weathers his latest crisis well. and YOU, my dear, take care of yourself!
Did you enjoy your girl's weekend? I am a glutton for punishment...once I finish the trip report, I will most likely start to plan our next vacation right away (I have this addiction, I cannot stop the planning *unless it is to reminisce over the last trip via a trip report/scrap booking*.

Well, lucky for a us, we have a few years to figure it out. Until the baby turns 3 (or is it 4?) he won't count toward the room count. So we will still fit "five and an infant" for a few more years. After that, I think it's adjoining rooms for us...unless I can trick dh into buying into DVC. He is against it on principal...if we buy in, he admits that we are going back. :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: Which we ALL know we are going back...but he likes to live the illusion that one day his wife and children will wake up and tell him that we don't want to go back to WDW.  That doesn't say much about his smarts.:rolleyes1 But we all still love him anyway!! :thumbsup2

My dad is still having more then a few issues. Today he had a port inserted into his chest and he will begin dialysis. We are hoping that will kick start his own kidneys. It sure is hard to live so far away when a parent is ill!

Sounds like you had a smashing day at Epcot, so sorry you hurt your ankle but I have a feeling that someone on high was trying to tell you something;). So glad you've backed up my idea about the Wishes Birthday cruise as long as we can get if booked it's now a definate.

Make sure you do a trip report after you get back. I would love to hear about a birthday Wishes cruise!! It looked like such fun! And I will need some "real person" advice about how rocky the pontoons get. Dh is very motion sick. I would hate to book something that will make him sick to the point of he won't be able to enjoy anything the rest of the night. Then again, he could always go and spend some time in the fitness center one night while the boys and I enjoy a little cruise and some fireworks!! :thumbsup2 I guess that will remain to be seen.

HA HA HA I am already caught up in the magic and romance of Scotland. The castles, the lore, the history, the natural beauty. Scotland really is a dream destination for me...although I am not sure how I would do in the "very" cool weather. Living in the southern US, it's mild most of the year. We get snow about once a year and even then, it's usually gone by the end of the afternoon. We have so few truly "cold" days that I am usually able to bundle up and hunker down in the house until the cold snap passes. How wimpy am I?! I grew up in Wisconsin. It is very cold there from late fall through late spring...I grew up playing in snow that was so deep that you could dig snow forts into the side of snow banks instead of having to build piles up yourself. I didn't mind it a bit as a child...but like I tell my family (when they make fun of me for turning into a weather wimp) I must have used up all of my cold tolerance in the first 25 years of my life. :rotfl: Now I am a fair weather gal. And please do post some pictures...I would truly love to see them! PS I send you wishes for a clearing of the rains!

I really do know it happened for a reason. I would NEVER have been able to enjoy the day as much or even do half as much had I not rented one. I should have done it at every park all vacation long...it's much easier to see that now that I am back home. ;)

I have lost my memory as well. I think that the baby sucks a few brain cells every hour. I lost my keys the other day and spent a good 20 minutes looking for them before my son pointed out that I had a big lump in my pocket...sure enough...the van keys. :rotfl: :rotfl2:

We had gotten the lost memory card for free from our neighbors. They just bought a new camera that took a different sort of memory stick so they gave us the two they had already. I am so glad I hadn't just spent money on the thing. I felt guilty when I admitted to our neighbors that I lost the card the first time we used it. Luckily they said they would have just thrown it out anyway had we not been able to use it...so they weren't upset. However, I still do feel a tad bit guilty. :guilty:

I sure missed the pictures! Sorry you lost your memory card.

Oh my! YES use the EVC. Do NOT be bull headed and stubborn like me. My day with the EVC was 100 times better then any other day as far as tiredness, wear and tear and sheer exhaustion setting in. It was a true miracle for me. I really do wish I would have been smart enough to get one sooner. But even with the OB, dh and a host of other people (including LindaBabe) telling me I would be better off using one/should definitely not try it without one...I thought I knew better. NOT!! ;)

I must say it was pricey...however the price was well worth the added mobility factor and the comfort/stamina issues.

Okay, so your daughter did survive...maybe my boys will not have any lasting damage done by their two week hot dog binge. I promise I did try and get them to chose something else (and every now and again I think they did dine on chicken nuggets and at the Coral Reef they did eat a baked chicken breast). Even now, back home, they are still on the hot dog kick (although I won't allow them to feast on them the way they did at WDW). If we let them, I think they would go on a total hot dog diet. I am not sure what that says about my cooking! :rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

I can tell you, the pontoon boats don't rock very much at all. It's rather more like sitting in your livingroom than on a boat. None of the lakes are very deep, so they can't get much good wave action going, anyway.

I suggest you rent your ecv from one of the off site rental places (Like Walker) for several reasons.

1. resorts are big, and bus stops are often a hike from the park entrance so you can save yourself a LOT of by having one before you get to the park.
2. it's less expensive on a long trip because you can usually get a discount on a long term rental
3. Off site ones have 3 wheels, which makes them far more maneuverable. Also, to back up, you need only push the left lever. On the Disney rentals, you actually have to flip a switch and then put your hand back on the lever.
4. Your companions will be grateful too, because the ecv can carry the load. There's a small basket on the front, you can hang a shoulder strap duffle bag on the back for a trunk, and self supporting bags will fit between your feet.
5. Disney rentals you can't stretch your legs out because the wheel covers are in the way on the platform, so they're rather uncomfortable.

I can't TELL you, Jay, how GLAD I am that you finally saw the light! There's no virtue in being in pain or putting yourself at risk.

Did you enjoy your girl's weekend?

Oh yes, despite the fact it drizzled, rained, and deluged for most of the trip! ALL my runners / walkers finished the race and got their medals - I was so proud of them! In fact, here are some of them now! Thanks for letting me share them with you!

Awaiting the next installment . . .

Aww Jay, I am sooo sorry you slipped and fell, but like some others said, it was a true blessing in disguise. Things really do happen for a reason, don't they? I am just glad that you did not get hurt more than you did and that the baby was okay. You are right, Disney's First Aid really is amazing. We had to visit them on our last trip.

I have to agree that those crocs really are slippery on wet surfaces. I almost ate the pavement a few times but luckily for me I was pushing a stroller so I was able to save myself. Pheww.

Wow, I think you guys must have had Tink on a leash because Pixie Dust was falling on you all over the place!! How wonderful that you ran into such a sweet, thoughtful CM...but he obviously thought the same thing about your adorable family. How fun for the boys to get to pick out their new Disney hats!

Reading all about your meals is making me VERY, VERY hungry. Hahaha. I am so glad that you loved Kona too. I think that is my favorite place so far. I do love Le Cellier too, though I have only been there once. I have to laugh about the two younger boys eating all those hot dogs. My little one is on a PB & J kick right now! I gues it doesn't matter how old you are...when you are on vacation you want to eat what you love! I see no harm in that! Hahaha.

That stinks you lost your memory card! I miss the pictures in this last post. You know what that means though, right Jay??? That means you have to post DOUBLE the amount of pictures in your next installment!!!! Hehehehe.

:rotfl2: :thumbsup2

Another great installment. I will be sad when it is over. I am glad to hear the ECV's are readily available. My sister has a bad knee and is being stubbon about getting one next week. I cant wait the hear the rest of the trip!!!

Jay, I will definitely use the ECV. I know I don't really have a choice. Chemo saved my life but wrecked a lot of other things in my body. I'll only be using it for distance -- I can still ride everything and walk through queues. My daughter and I walk a mile to two every night, but we all know Disney is just a bit bigger! :rotfl: :scared1:

It makes me feel a bit nervous -- when people can't see anything "wrong" with someone using an EVC, are they rude or mean, like I've heard?

Lindababe, thanks for the thoughtful advice!

Now Jay, please get back to your update!!! And I agree with MouseTriper -- double the pictures!!!!!

HA HA HA HA Yes, he lives by that company motto! ;)

You were right. 110% right about renting one. I think my ego was more hurt when I did my graceful bathroom slide then anything else. I must have looked an awful lot like an uncoordinated pregnant penguin on a very slippery piece of ice. :rotfl2: And you all are right, in the end, it was the very best thing that could have happened because it did force me to listen to reason.

Nah, I don't think we did/were anything special, just took the time to say hello. Actually, I think (according to dh since I was inside getting my ankle fixed up) it all started with my boys hounding him to pin trade. ;) They have become little pin trading maniacs. Which of course, I am so proud of them! :cutie:
Hmmm...double the pictures? Well....OKAY! :) Coming up the next installment with PLENTY of photos! ;)

It's hard to give in and admit you need the help when you aren't used to asking for it...BUT it really was the best thing I could have done for myself all vacation long. I should have the next installment up tonight! Thanks for sticking with me!:grouphug:

I was worried about the same thing, the whole EVC for healthy looking people thing.

Not a soul was rude or mean to me there...although I have seen more then a few threads with people giving out their 2 cents (not about me of course, just about healthy looking riders in general)...however, whatever anyone might have silently thought as I was able to glide past and actually enjoy myself instead of spend the day trying to minimize steps and not over do it to the point where I would be unable to make it back to our room at the resort, well those thoughts in their heads didn't mean a thing to me. Forget the judgmental and think about how many more magical memories you will get to make with your daughter if you allow yourself to take what help you need!!

I sure missed the pictures! Sorry you lost your memory card.

Day 12...Relaxing at the Grand Floridian and a special surprise!!

We spent the morning hanging out in the lounge (still pretty crowded, but we did find a table). We ate breakfast and then we broke out a deck of cards and played Go Fish. Yep, we are the family who at WDW sat down and played Go Fish. A bit cheesy but we had fun. After our late light breakfast and card game we were up for some exploring. So we headed out to prowl the beautiful grounds of the Grand Floridian.

First stop was the marina. The views were amazing!!
Disney2007135.jpg

The boys enjoyed the telescopes. We fed a few quarters into the slots and kept them busy for a good long time.

Disney2007137.jpg

Disney2007138.jpg

Disney2007140.jpg

After about a half an hour of taking in the view, we got a bit hungry, lucky for us, Gasperilla's was right behind us! So we turned and walked (or in my case gimped) in.

Dh and "Aladdin" each enjoyed a pizza plate while I dined on a grilled chicken sandwich with fries. I chose a blueberry muffin for dessert while dh and "Aladdin" had soft serve ice cream (which they loved). **TIP, pay for your meal and tell them you will come back up after your meal to get your ice cream...they didn't mind a bit and dessert was still frozen by the time they got around to enjoying it.**

Of course my two most diverse eating sons went with something totally off the wall and each of them ordered a hot dog with fries and a cookie.

After our meal, we played games of a different sort. We loaded some arcade cards for the boys and dh and I watched them go crazy with happiness. We let them each have $10 on a card and they had a great time spending it. If we would have been up for it, they would have gone through at least double that amount. But after a few rounds of games it was time to head back outside.

We stopped at the sundries shop and I picked up a few paperbacks and a bottle of water. Then dh and the boys walked me over to the beach area and helped me settle down on to a very comfy shaded lounge chair and then they left to get pool ready (change and do some pool ball shopping).

As I sat on the beach, I didn't even crack a book. I just enjoyed taking it all in. I was surrounded by beauty on every side. As I sat there, I snapped a few pictures so that I would have something to remember that perfectly sunny, breezy, amazing moment in time.

Disney2007144.jpg

Disney2007145.jpg

Just as I started to get a bit warm (read overheated) my men showed up. And we were off again. This time we headed over to the pool, the quiet pool that is. We had a surprise for the boys the next day at waterfall pool so we didn't want to make use of that one this day. As the boys and dh took the plunge I put me feet up at a table in the shade of the pool bar's overhang. I ordered a soft pretzel and a lava smoothie and sat munching and sipping while reading my book.

We spent hours out by the courtyard pool that afternoon. It was such a fun and relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Of course, I took some pictures to commemorate that portion of our day as well.
Disney2007146.jpg

The pool was so empty!
Disney2007150.jpg

I passed the camera to dh and he snapped a few underwater shots of our little fish.
Disney2007147.jpg

Disney2007148.jpg

Disney2007149.jpg

The boys really made good use of the water balls they bought at the poolside stand. They had a great time playing catch. They threw those little soggy spheres back and forth and back and forth. Who knew cheapy pool toys could be so much fun?!

As the afternoon wore on, it was time to head back to our room for a special surprise for my little "Goof".
Disney2007154.jpg

As I gimped the short way back to Sugarloaf (it's right across from the courtyard pool, the perfect location actually) I was so excited I thought I might burst. For MONTHS I had been talking with one of the private dining planners about getting a special cake for our little snorkeling fool, "Goofy". Not only would it feature his favorite pastime but also his favorite character, Pluto. As we made our way upstairs we stopped to grab a few drinks and then we opened the door.

As that door opened I held my breath...would the cake be there as planned? Would it be everything I had hoped for? Would "Goofy" like it? Would dh go looking for a divorce lawyer if he found out how much it cost?! HA!

I rushed into the room ahead of the rest of the family and there it was...in all of it's glory...the coolest snorkeling Pluto cake this side of out of this world!!
dis006.jpg

dis008.jpg

dis009.jpg

Every single decoration on the cake was edible! The sea horses, the starfish, the shells, the seaweed, the ocean creatures, the coral, even the sand!! The detail on the decorations was flat out amazing!! **Ignore the nasty little fly perched on the edge of the Pluto picture...ICK, I am glad I didn't see that then!!**
Disney2007156.jpg

Disney2007157.jpg

"Goofy" LOVED the cake! He was happier then I had ever seen him before!! He was beaming...glowing...floating on air! I think that every penny we spent on that cake was worth it! To see his smile shine and his eyes grow big as saucers in amazement was one of the best things that has ever happened to dh and I! It was a priceless moment...to help your son have his dreams come true. That cake was everything he loved rolled into one. Snorkeling, sugary sweets, ocean creatures, Pluto and chocolaty goodness.

Disney2007159.jpg

Disney2007160.jpg

All of the boys thought this cake was out of this world!!
Disney2007163.jpg

We carved that thing into gigantic pieces and sat around smiling at each other and stuffing our faces with sweet cake goodness.

That surprise was everything I had hoped for and more. I didn't think that he would be "that" happy. It was such a great moment for our entire family! Especially the birthday boy himself...our little 8 year old ray of sunshine...."Goofy"!!

Up next dinner at the California Grill.

To be continued...

:goofy:

Oh my goodness Jay...what a BEAUTIFUL, YUMMY and DELICIOUS looking cake!!! Your secret surprises, both little (cakes) and big (extra week at GF) , never cease to amaze me!!!! I just LOVE the way you come up with all these incredible ideas!!! I like the way your mind thinks!!! Hehehehe!

I can't wait to read more......!!!!

P.S. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Disney could send us cakes like that via air express???? My little ones' birthdays would never be the same!!!

That cake is amazing, I don't care HOW MUCH it cost it was so worth it:love: . I've shown it to DH, who's response was "Wow, I didn't know they could make cakes like THAT!". I then casualy directed him to the Birthday cake thread and pointed out Prices, Sizes, Flavours, my personal preferences and telephone numbers for ordering.....yes I even amaze myself with my subtlety at times:rotfl2:

WOW, what an incredible cake!! Jay, you have the most wonderful ideas and surprises during your trips - I think you need to become a professional Disney vacation planner! Just think, extra money to feed your Disney addiction! ;)

What a cool cake. It is nice that your family takes days away from the parks to just relax at the resorts.

What a beautiful cake.

Did anyone else notice the "Hidden Mickey" made by the platter & the smaller plates?

So glad you all had a great day.
B

Skygirl you don't have to rent one from disney you can rent one from an outside company and have it delivered to your resort I think it is like 15 or 20 dollars a day. If you call your resort they will give you the name of the place that rents them and they deliver it to the resort.
An ECV runs about $30 a day, but you can often get a 'break' on the price if you are renting for a week or more.
Check out the disABILITIES FAQs thread (look for the green arrow near the top of the disABILITIES Board thread list). There are phone numbers and website links for a number of companies recommended by DIS posters.

Thanks, SueM, that was a great place to go!!

Jay, wow, that cake was just amazing and worth every penny. Isn't it funny how money means nothing when we are making our kids happy? Goofy looked so thrilled -- little fish. :thumbsup2
