Dreams come true...WDW 8/30-9/16

Jay

Thanks again for all of the help. I am so into your trip report I can't wait for more updates I am constantly checking the computer my husband thinks I am some sort of sicko he just told me that he is worried about me HA HA

Sorry to hear about your trip change, but glad to hear you're feeling well & following all of the doctor's orders! You sure did meet up with a couple of "strange" families on this trip! I love watching Miyuki "create" her candy. It's amazing! I have not seen that storyteller. It did seem like a wierd story! :confused3

I am so enjoying this, Jay! I love the picture of the boys (all four of them) walking together. Heartwarming to see Goofy holding Daddy's hand.

We are also having dinner at Le Cellier! Our first time there and we can't wait.

Although it is sad that you had to cancel your trip it is for a wonderful reason -- the newest prince! You're still in my prayers every night and we can't wait to meet him through your pictures.

Another great update! What a magical day you had!!! :thumbsup2

Where is Miyuki's stand in Japan? I'd love to see her at work! Her creations look incredible!!! :goodvibes I want to add that to my to-do list for December! Sorry to hear about yet another "bad encounter" with the family at the stand. :sad2: It never ceases to amaze me about some of the things that I've heard about or witnessed myself. But, I'm glad to hear that your boys were "rewarded" for using their manners. :yay:
Her stand is right in front of the big department store in Japan. If you arrive about ten minutes before the time listed in your daily entertainment guide, you will see an empty cart in front of the main doors to the store. Just wait right in front of it or to one side of it. You can also walk up later, but you will be further back. She is GREAT at what she does and a real sweetheart on top of that!

Thankfully we didn't really directly encounter the other family, more like watched them unravel. The glaring they did was all for Miyuki. I just had to laugh though, they were so full of spit and venom that they forgot to enjoy what they did have. They got picked for a special lollipop creation...something many families did not get at all. They also had a beautiful flamingo to keep (had they not fought and broken it) and even after it was broken, they had candy slivers to eat (had they not thrown it away). BUT, instead of being happy about any of that, they were so into what was done wrongly to them (or so it seemed from their actions). It in no way impacted our day, other then to leave me scratching my head over the things some kids get away with and like I admitted before, I had to laugh out loud when they stood casting daggers with their eyes at Miyuki giving out tiny little scraps of unshaped candy for a small taste. I mean, we did appreciate those little tastes but it wasn't like she gave them something "big". I cannot imagine glaring over a sliver of unformed sugar. :rotfl:

Hi Jay!

I just read about your meal at the Garden Grill, and I'm jealous! You had such great character interaction! I hope when DH and I have little ones we will get the same. Being two big kids, we don't always as much interaction as your reports are famous for documenting. Hee, although, it's pretty priceless to see my 6'2" 350 lb DH just up with open arms and yell "MICKEY!!" when he sees our favorite mouse. Mickey is always there with a hug then. :rotfl:

Hey, have you ever stayed at SSR? DH and I were going to stay at a value, but discovered we could rent points at SSR for only a little more. Yay!

Anyways, can't wait to read more. Keep up the great work!
How fun (the BIG Mickey hugs)! We do love characters. I am hoping my boys NEVER outgrow their love of them.

We have never stayed at SSR, but I have a dear friend who LOVES it there and is trying to convince us to vacation there with her next year. I know that won't happen next year (I am already torn between the CR and AKL as far as that decision goes). With a baby, I want somewhere we already "know". Hopefully that will make things a bit easier. ;) Thanks for sticking with the report!

Great update Jay!

Sorry I can't help you on the meaning of that story - it's like she skipped an important part or something :confused3

I can't believe you had another encounter with a self absorbed family! I just don't get some people. Their children were rude and unappreciative, why should they be rewarded for that?

Sorry Stich had a little accident on your way out of the park, but glad it wasn't too serious.
Okay, so it's not just me. I don't get that story. Someday when I have oodles of spare time (and find myself not obsessed with DISing...fat chance ;)) I will have to try and track that story down online and figure it out. It still bugs me. ;)

Like I said, I couldn't help but laugh at the family. They were all so angry. Our family just got the same treat and we were over the moon excited about it (as were all of the other families I saw around the stand who got a candy treat). Miyuki really does amazing things with candy!

I was so glad he was okay too. I felt so badly for him. But he is one tough critter...so he was up and back to himself before very long at all.:thumbsup2

Jay

Thanks again for all of the help. I am so into your trip report I can't wait for more updates I am constantly checking the computer my husband thinks I am some sort of sicko he just told me that he is worried about me HA HA
HA HA HA you just have DISitis! Sadly, I also suffer from that. Dh told me I was sick with DIS disease long ago!:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Oh and thanks for being so nice! I cannot wait to hear about your trip! Make sure you report back! I will need to take my WDW holiday trip through the eyes of others this year! :)

:confused3
I am so glad it's not just me and the story. I was starting to feel a bit ummm...well, dumb! ;) I just don't get it at all. I could watch Miyuki for hours. It just amazes me how fast her fingers and scissors fly! She is very talented!

I am so enjoying this, Jay! I love the picture of the boys (all four of them) walking together. Heartwarming to see Goofy holding Daddy's hand.

We are also having dinner at Le Cellier! Our first time there and we can't wait.

ENJOY LE CELLIER!! And don't forget, dip your pretzel bread in your cheese soup! *YUM!!* I love that picture too. Maybe for just that reason! :)

OH! Another WONDERFUL installment! Thank you :)
Thanks Linda!

Hi Jay,

Guess what?!? I found the turtle story!! Here's the link:

http://www.occc.edu/bwise/Turtles/Turtle_Stories.htm#Japaneses Tale

I hope this helps!
THANK YOU!! It is the same story! Other then the turtle returning at the end to make him young again (a Disney ending if ever there was one;)).

I am still scratching my head over the whole thing. :confused3 Why would the turtle/queen repay kindness by inviting him down and then letting him stay so long that his entire family and all of his friends had grown old and died/moved away? Doesn't seem like a very good reward to me! :rolleyes1

BUT THANK YOU!!! I am happy I at least got most of the story right. Now I can rest easier! :rotfl2: :thumbsup2

:thanks:

I just found your trip report and it is absolutely fantastic!!!! You are a brilliant story teller. As many times as we have been to Disney you just gave me about 10 cool new things to do. Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your families adventures in the world.:thumbsup2 I cant wait to hear the rest.

Once again our morning started with breakfast in the lounge. After we filled our bellies it was time to head out to Disney's Animal Kingdom. We once again ventured down to the bus stop (and gasp, this time, I didn't even have cab fare in my pocket, I trusted the buses at WDW!!). We were careful to avoid the smoking area right outside of the front door by detouring through the gift shop (DANGEROUS for a shopaholic like me). I wonder if Disney put the smoking area there to drive the nonsmokers into the marketplace? I wouldn't put it past them. ;)

On our way through I pointed out some beautiful animal figures (Raku clay figures painted by hand in Africa) I "really wanted" to dh. They were sitting in a domed locked case near the front of the store. I do this all of the time and I NEVER get whatever it is I pointed out. Dh is not a shopper. He is not big into giving gifts you buy in the store. He is just not the gift giving sort. However, he is very dear and romantic in many other ways. Just surprises are not his style. **I promise this impacts our story later**

Within 10 minutes we were on the bus and heading to DAK. Upon arrival I got worried, it looked really crowded. BUT, looks can be deceiving. I think Animal Kingdom is just one of those places that feels crowded even when it's not. It is just laid out so that congestion is apparent more so then at the other parks.

Our first stop was going to be Rafiki's Planet Watch. This is something we had skipped on all of our other trips to DAK so this time, we didn't want to miss it. The train ride there was a short and pleasant one.

Disney07467.jpg

Upon arrival, the boys were my modeling captives. I kept stopping to make them pose. And you know what, I hadn't planned to do it that way on purpose, but falling behind the others who had gotten off of the train when we did, made for a very private stroll. It was very nice.

I love this picture of "Stitch". I wish I would have snapped the same sort of shot of both of the other boys.
Disney07469.jpg

Disney07470.jpg

Disney07471.jpg

Because we had fallen behind, our boys were the only ones at the kid's fun stop (what are those really called?). They were able to search out wildlife in the area (it's a fun activity) without anyone else yelling out where things were before they could find them. So, lingering once you get off of the train seems to be a good plan. If you want some photo ops without people in the background and if you would like to be able to let your kids do the fun stop without that many other people around, linger! ;) But be warned, the next train will arrive about 15 minutes after yours gets in. So don't tarry too long. ;)

Next we came to an open area in front of the main building. As we started to walk across the paved entry area, a recycling can started to follow us!! All of a sudden we hear, EXCUSE ME...HELLO!! So we stop and look around. Then start walking again. Then we hear, I SAID HELLO!! Looking back, dh and I catch on. So we point out the recycling can to our boys and we go and take a seat. The boys had so much fun visiting with the can!
Disney07472.jpg

After joking around with the boys for a bit, the can asked to be taken to their parents. He then requested that we get up and stroll with them. Finally he asked me to take a picture of them together. Which, of course, I did!
Disney07473.jpg

Then the can told them that before he would let them leave, he wanted to play a game with them. There was an animal mosaic set into the walkway and they played "what animal is this" on top of it. The can rolled over an animal and had the boys take turns telling him what they were.
Disney07474.jpg

I am happy to report they got them all correct. Toward the end he tried throwing in some questions along with the animal IDing for "Aladdin". He (the can) told "Aladdin" he was mighty impressed with his scientific knowledge. That had "Aladdin" beaming with pride!

All told the boys spent about 15 minutes playing, talking and joking with a recycling can. It was a very fun and unexpected treat.

Once in the building, our family had a lot of fun exploring the different areas and learning new things. What the area reminded me most of was the educational area at the zoo. For us, this was great. We love animals. We love science. We love learning. I did however, hear more then a few people saying it was boring there. So, before you go, just know what you are setting off to explore. However, I think everyone should try it at least once. We really did have a ton of fun!
Disney07475.jpg

Up first the boys saw a CM at a small stand. She was holding a big brown plastic ball (you can see her standing with the ball in the background of the above picture). It was made of hard plastic. It looked like you could take a hand saw to it and maybe make a few dents. It was heavy duty. It was also all scratched up and had few holes in it. The boys got to guess what animal had done that to the ball. After a few guesses, the boys got it right. A tiger had clawed/bitten the ball up. The CM then let them guess why tigers needed toys. In all the boys spent about 10 minutes learning from the CM. She was a wonderful CM. Another one of those people that really exemplifies what it is that makes Disney special...the CMs!

We then spent about 15 minutes watching a mouse have a tumor removed. Sounds sort of ishy, but it was actually very interesting. We could have and would have stayed longer, but we got there at the tail end of the surgery.

Then it was time to look at the foods they use to feed the animals. Our boys had a great time guessing which animals ate what. Another great CM explained that and a lot more to them.

And then came the animals...the big ones! ;)
Disney07476.jpg

Disney07477.jpg

Disney07478.jpg

After spending quite a bit more time exploring the different displays and talking with various CMs we headed out and grabbed a train back to the rest of the Animal Kingdom.

Our first stop once back at DAK proper was lunch at the Flame Tree BBQ. Dh had the ribs while "Aladdin" and I ate the smoked half chicken. All of those plates came with beans, corn on the cob and some really tasty cornbread. Dh and I also split a side of cole slaw. The younger two boys opted for (surprise, surprise) hot dogs.

I know we ordered dessert with this meal, but being as we didn't have any room to eat it...I cannot remember what it was. We had never had Flame Tree before as we were huge Tusker House fans. In comparison, I still liked Tusker House's food more and the outdoor seating areas at Flame Tree were shaded, but shady doesn't equal air conditioned. ;) However, I would definitely eat there again (happily).

After our lunch I was feeling mighty tired. The long day at EPCOT prior to this one was really catching up with me. But I had one thing I was absolutely not going to miss, the new Nemo musical. We made it to the theater with only 10 minutes to go until show time. Even though it was packed "down front" we got great seats in the middle of the theater in the front part of the back seating area. I am glad we didn't get there the recommended 40 minutes early just to sit up front. Our seats were great. The show was a good one. Although, I have to admit, I still miss the Tarzan show. One of my new favorite Disney songs (The Big Blue World) made another appearance in our vacation (they sing it in the show). I really need to see if I can download that song!

By the time the show ended, I was at my end. I had no more energy left to keep exploring DAK. So my sweet boys walked me to the front of the park and I made my way back to AKL via the bus.

While I was napping back at the resort, dh and the boys had a blast at AKL. They hit Everest and it's Tough to Be a Bug once each. Then they took 4 rides IN A ROW on Kali River Rapids. Dh said they didn't even have to get off between rides! Nobody was waiting to get on! Amazing! I think they hit it during the parade so the crowds were drawn else where.

According to dh they had tons of fun. And that nap really helped me turn back into a human being again! As did the surprise that awaited me when I awoke. Dh and each of the boys had gotten me one of the animal figures I had been fawning over earlier in the day. I was over the moon excited! In fact, one of the very first things I did upon our return home was to clear a shelf in the family room that is now home to my very own African animal herd. I have a giraffe, zebra, hippo, lion and a meerkat. I adore this special surprise...made even more special by the fact that dh is not very likely to repeat it any time soon. ;)

To be continued...

HOW cool is THAT?! You'll enjoy them for ever!

You know, I've been thinking . . .maybe the way we 'are' attracts what we 'get' out of Disney - you and your family are joyful and interested and all those good attributes generate positive energy and so you have positive experiences with cast members and the candy lady and so forth.

I think those two "other" families attracted the experiences they perceive as negative by their own negative "vibe".

So glad to hear you are taking care and all is well! That photo of Stitch on the ground is precious :)

Day 8 continued...

Their gifts presented (and me still in oh-so-happy shock) the males in my family needed to change, they were still more then a bit damp from a 4-peat on Kali River Rapids. As I took dh hung his shorts up to dry, our camera fell out of his pocket and the screen cracked. For the entire rest of the vacation, all of our pictures will be taken on a camera I had packed to take underwater pictures. THANK GOODNESS I had splurged on a digital camera for use in the pools!! Without it, we would have had to waste time shopping for a camera or worse yet, have missed out on some priceless vacation photos.

Having our camera broken was a big bummer, but I am having fun cyber shopping for a new camera for every day use...so that is my silver lining! :cloud9:

Back to day 8 of our vacation, having changed, it was time to head to one of the bead activities (music of the savanna) in the Sunset Lounge. They played drums and talked about conservation. At this activity the boys received their second to last bead. One more to go and they would earn their totem beads. Between the last two bead activities we had time to head up to the lounge once again. This time we were going to try some of their evening appetizers. The lamb on a stick was a huge hit with all of us! YUM! And dh and I were happy to once again dine on some of the breads and dips that we had enjoyed at Jiko earlier in the week. I know most people say you cannot make an entire meal of the offerings, but at least on this night, our family did.

Some pictures from in the lounge:

Disney07449.jpg

Following dinner and games we went back to the Sunset Lounge and the boys took part in their final bead activity. It was an animal identification game. When we arrived the boys were the only kids there, so the guides got out their drums and let the boys help them announce the start of the activity.
Disney07459.jpg

Disney07460.jpg

Disney07461.jpg

Disney07462.jpg

Those drums sure do work! Within a few minutes a small group of kids had gathered round and it was time for the game to begin. Everyone (even adults who wanted them) got a laminated card with different animals on it. The guides would read clues and once you knew which animal they were giving you clues about, you would hold put your finger on the picture of the animal and hold your card up over your head. This activity was surprisingly fun. All of us got really into trying to be the first in our family to get our cards up above our head.

When the activity was over, the guides collected the laminated boards and handed out a bead to each participant. With this last bead, our boys had completed their AKL bead project. The guides were super excited for them. And our boys were VERY excited themselves. Their totem beads were given to them with a small ceremony. The guides asked them each to name their very favorite animal and to make it their personal totem. "Aladdin" picked giraffes, "Goofy" picked parrots and "Stitch" picked turtles. The boys were then each given a bead and told it represented their totem. They were also given the responsibility to go out into the world and learn about their chosen animal. They were told they should also use that knowledge to help protect their totem animals and the earth. All of our boys took this very seriously. Since we have been back home, the boys dragged me to the library to find books about each of their totems. After the beads and the promises to learn about and help protect their chosen animals, the boys got to play the drums again with the guides as a treat. The guides were amazing. They really took the time to make the boys feel really special. They went way above and beyond what was needed and made this a very special time for our boys.
Disney07465.jpg

The three very proud totem bearers (you can see that "Aladdin" is holding up his string of beads):
Disney07466.jpg

Totems now in hand, we went over to sit around the fire pit in the main lobby.
Disney07454.jpg

We sat around talking about how fabulous our stay had been so far. We were very happy soaking up the moment. BUT...the boys wanted to go and swim so we were off to the pool (after snapping a few more photos).
Disney07456.jpg

Disney07455.jpg

Disney07458.jpg

After a nice long nighttime swim we grabbed a few desserts from the lounge and made our way to our rooms and settled in for an early night's sleep. We had a fun day planned tomorrow.

Dh was going to be taking "Aladdin" and "Stitch" to Blizzard Beach while I took "Goofy" to Discovery Cove (he had asked to go snorkeling as his birthday gift, so snorkeling it was).

TO BE CONTINUED...

Awww...go on... ;) THANK YOU for those super sweet words. I love finding new things to do every trip. I don't know how it would get old. Every single trip we discover something new that brings the magic alive and we have such a long list of old favorites that we never manage to fit in everything...there's always something exciting left to look forward to on a future trip.

HOW cool is THAT?! You'll enjoy them for ever!

I really will. Getting a special gift from the boys and dh was the icing on the cake. :thumbsup2

And thanks Linda, I don't know that we are a ray of sunshine family or anything...but we are always "stopping" to smell the roses so to speak. It seems like a lot of great surprises and magical moments arise from just taking the time to relax and let them happen. If someone is always rushing from place to place expecting something special to happen then I don't see how they could end up very happy. I mean if we had been running around set on finding the dream team to win something, then we wouldn't have had the time to stop and play with a recycling can or talk to any one of the many CMs who made our trip so enjoyable just by sharing themselves with us. I am sure you know just what I mean.:goodvibes
I know that the Finding Nemo musical is available on itunes.
:woohoo: I will have to download that (whenever I find my iPod, I am ALWAYS losing that thing).

:cloud9: How sweet of the "men" in your life to surprise you with one of those animals you liked! As always, your update was just great! I love reading about your family's adventures!

Another great installment. We never did finish all those bead activities. Kudos to you and your family. Your pictures are making me miss AKL CL lounge it holds some special memories for us too!!! But we are off to try the WL CL next month. We will see how it stacks up to our favorite. I cant wait to hear about Discovery Cove.

***On a side note. Can I ask where you got the pins for the boys that look to me like cast memeber name tags. I think this will be our first year of pin trading, you have inspired me to give it a go****

Thanks Liz.

I will take a picture of them and get it up within the next few days. I just have to find my camera first...I am forever losing important things.:rolleyes1 Right now, I am using the poor baby-to-be as an excuse...however, truth be told, I do this on a regular basis, pregnant or not. :rolleyes1

I cannot wait to hear about the WL CL. That just may be in our future (sometime). That lounge is a very special place indeed!

***On a side note. Can I ask where you got the pins for the boys that look to me like cast memeber name tags. I think this will be our first year of pin trading, you have inspired me to give it a go****

Thanks Liz.
We got the name tags at the Christmas Store at DTD. They engrave them there as well. We got a replacement one at MGM (cannot remember which store, but one of the front stores) and had it engraved there as well. If you do plan on pin trading, make sure you buy some traders on eBay before you go! We have saved SO much money doing that. On eBay you can get a pin for about $2-$3 a pin depending on how many you buy, the seller, etc. When you get to the parks, they are much more expensive. About $7.99 each. Sometimes they have multi packs of pins which brings it down to about $5 a pin. But those pins seem to be the ones everyone is trying to trade so the CM lanyards are full of them.

It's true that you cannot trade for every single special pin you want but you can get tons of ones you love through trading and saving so much on your traders, you can allow yourself to splurge on a few very special ones in the stores without much guilt. At least that's the way we do it. Hope that helped. :)

When DD was really big into the trading (between ages 6 and 10), we'd use a new lanyard each trip. The way her lanyard was at the end of the trip, that's the way it's preserved today. :cloud9: Each is in its own ziplock, with the dates and resort (or, resorts for our split stays!) clearly marked. We have 8 or 9 of them (one was from a DCL cruise!) She's 14 now and into "other" things (looking out for "cute" boys at WDW!! ;)), but she still loves to reminisce about our past trips and special moments we shared! :goodvibes
