Dream jobs as a child which you wouldn't want to do now as an adult?

Veterinarian, could not handle it if I made an animal feel scared or be in pain even if it were to help keep them healthy.
I feel bad enough when I have to take my pet.

I always wanted to be the "checkout girl" at the grocery store when I was little. I thought it would be really fun to key in all the prices (showing my age on that one) ! Really important job and I'm so grateful for all those who work in the grocery store - especially with COVID. I'm not sure I would want to be on my feet that much.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a teacher. I did it for 20 years, I cannot even imagine trying to do it again.

I still literally have nightmares about trying to teach again

I always wanted to be a teacher, I even went to school for it and basically only had field experience and student teaching left. However after working at an after school program and youth center, I realized I didn’t really have any desire to be around children all day.

I wanted to be a Zoologist. Took 2 more grades to realize I hate science. Then I wanted to be a 2nd grade teacher. I can teach my kids, I don't want to teach other people's. In high school I wanted to go in psychology. After I worked in customer service for over 5 years, I realized I do not have the temperament or the empathy to deal with people's actual problems.

I wanted to be a teacher or a librarian. I was a teacher. However, when I was done - I was done. So I got a job in a library!

As far as something I really wouldn't want to do... my sister and I used to play "travel agent." (My dad used to collect maps and brochures so we had the materials.) My sister became one. (We were nothing if not consistent in our transitions from play to real life.) Anyway, as much as I enjoy doing some of my own trip planning, that kind of sounds like a nightmare of detail work without the fun of the travel.

When I was very little I wanted to be a garbage collector. I thought it was cool when the truck would come through the street. I wanted to be the guy who hung onto the back of the truck and got to yell, "Hey!" and "Go!" to the driver. I used to look out my window every trash day and watch them work, so much so that they sometimes waved to me. :cutie:

Now that I'm an adult and one of my household jobs is to take the garbage out, I don't know what I was thinking. I have a very strong stomach, but when you go to close up the trash bag and that little *whiff* of garbage smell floats up, it makes me gag every time. Can't imagine being around that smell every day.

Teacher - did that for a while and won’t go back

Rollerskating waitress- never did that and probably won’t LOL

For a small amount of time I wanted to be an astronaut or a vet. Can’t do physics to save my life and could not handle seeing sick and injured animals-I don’t know how you all do it.

Doctor.

I spent my entire childhood convinced I wanted to be one.

I am SO glad I had a reality check in college and changed my mind. You couldn't pay me enough to be one nowadays with all the bureaucracy of insurance, the paperwork, etc.

And the average pay is barely $200k, which is not even close to worth it, considering the loans you end up with.

Police officer. People call you for help and then get mad because you can't help. People you don't know trying to hurt you or worse.

I wanted to be an orthodontist. No interest in being anywhere near peoples' mouths - ew. But the money would be good, I'm sure!

Wanted to run a bed and breakfast.....watched a lot of Newhart on tv. Love to bake and make breakfast casseroles. But hate to houseclean.

A chef of my own kitchen.

Now, I don't want those crazy hours. I like spending time with my family.

Once I did a volunteer thing (while in college) at my old high school where I was assigned to a high school chemistry teacher. She knew who I was but I was never her student. I found out that my HS chemistry (and physics) teacher had requested me but somehow I got assigned to her.

I went for maybe 6 weeks, but I was doing some mundane things like grading papers and mixing chemicals for a chem lab. However, the most terrifying thing I remember was the teacher asked me to go up before the class and try to explain electron states/spin without any preparation. I could manage grading papers since I could look all that up and I had all the answers, but in front of the class was just terrifying. And I hadn't even thought of it in maybe 3 years. I'm not even sure I could have done it properly with a day's preparation.
