Hi,

I was wondering if there would be any problems taking a cruise right before or right after a dry dock. The Dream is going into dry dock in October 2020(as many of you know already) with one 3 night cruising in October right before the dry dock. Then in November coming out of dry dock with a 3 night right after the dry dock. Would you be concerned if your cruise was one of those 3 night cruises right before or after? Any help would be appreciated. 🛳

We were on the cruise preceding a dry dock for the Magic one year. By the end of the cruise a lot of things were starting to be torn up, with storage boxes on the pool deck for storing things.

I'm leery of cruises just after a dry dock (especially a major one), there's lots of "new" stuff that the crew (and the ship) has to learn.

Avoid them. As was mentioned, sometimes work starts early and areas or attractions on the ship may be closed before the cruise is complete. As for after, they may have to finish up work into the cruise after the dry dock. Worst case, they encounter a major problem during the maintenance and they have to cancel a cruise scheduled for right after the dry dock. Ship cleanliness may not be back to “normal” right after a dry dock as well.
You might book one of these and be just fine but there is a higher risk of something going wrong.

The first cruise after dry dock is a 7 day cruise November 1, Eastern Caribbean. We're booked on it and are really looking forward to the trip. My only concern is to make sure we run water in the sink and shower as soon as we get into the room. I had read, forgot where, the water in the trap can evaporate while the ship is in dry dock, allowing gasses to back up into the bathroom. Running some water restores the barrier and keeps the gasses out.

I hadn't thought about other issues related to the dry dock. It was the schedule that was right for us. If there is an issue, there is an issue. A positive note is it's DCL.

Does anyone have any information regarding what is being updated? It would give us an idea of where to look for issues.

Personally, I'd like to see the menus changed, but that's just me, and they don't need to dry dock the ship for that.

Yes, I would avoid them. I’ve seen nothing that makes me think its a good idea. I may be wrong, but I don’t even think those cruises are discounted for the inconvenience, maybe cheaper for time of year.

While running the water in the sink & shower for a time is not really a bad idea, the issue with the dry pipes is eliminated by pouring water down the drain in the floor (usually located near the toilet). That's where the piping is that needs water to seal the gasses.

We were on the Fantasy in 2017 after it came out of dry dock. It was a 3-night double dip. We didn't have any issues with our room or any areas being closed. On the way back to PC the ship had issues with one of the engines and we had to be towed back to PC. So we were several hours late getting back to port. We had driven so it was no issue for us, but others were scrambling to get their flights changed.
