We want a dog. We have wanted a dog for about a year. I have researched and researched and settle on either a Corgi or a Doxie.

Which one?

Also we live in a complex that allows small dogs, however even though we told them we were interested and planning on getting a small dog they moved us into a no dog building without telling us. The girls across the way have two, a pit bull and a chow, both breeds not allowed even in the dog buildings. DFIance and I are goody two shoes and law abiding citizens and though it's obviouse no one really cares and no one would probally know we are too chicken to "hide" a dog for a few months.

What would you do?

Either way we will get a dog when we move... which breed would you get?

It's just us and DFiance works out of the house.

Even though there are only you and DF now, Are their kids on the horizon one day? I would probably choose a Corgi. Doxies, Alot, not saying all, can be snippy and nasty. Though all breeders need to be researched, because with improper breeding and socialization any dog can be nasty. Make sure you get the dog around kids ALOT. So if and when you do have children, the dog knows what to expect. I would wait until I moved out of that complex. What if your landlord found out and made you get rid of the dog? Good Luck!

I wouls not choose the Doxie . I have a 11 yr old VERY Spoiled 7 lb mini Doxie . I work at a vet clinic and so I am around them alot . They are very snippy and always choose 1 person to be close to , Tommy only tolerats other being around me . He WILL BITE . Even my own DH , I love him and I really do spoil him way toooo much maybe that is alot of it . When I ask clients how thiers is around other people outside of thier home I always get the same answer " Well sometimes he/ she bites "

Corgi's I would not own one myself ( Not to offend anyone with one ) they smell bad all the time ::yes::

I vote for dachshunds since I have one. I got him when he was 8 weeks old. He is not a biter. He is very gentle around small children and he was not raised among them. Very affectionate and loving animals.

Only problem is that he likes to dig in my flower bed, but then they were originally bred for badger hunting and that required dachshunds to dig.

Corgis are short, but not really small. Very smart dogs though.

I only know a few doxies and they were plagued by back problems - but I think that can be the case will all long backed dogs.

I can love any dog, guess I'm no help!!

I've had several Corgis and they were terrific dogs with my kids. The corgis I have owned have been the smartests! I've had German Shephards, a Dalmatian, cocker spaniel, catahula cow dog, and right now a black lab and I've loved them all but none of them were as smart as my corgis.

Why would corgis stink? Mine never did. The only stinky dog I had was the catahula--for some reason she had stinky feet. My friend does have a stinky dachsund though. I don't think it is the breed though.

Thanks for the responses!

I think we have decided that through all the research the Corgi is the best breed for us...

We have a deposit on a litter that is due on July 22 from a breeder I have known for a while. We will be able to get the puppy in late September but are leaving October 8th for our two week wedding and honeymoon so the breeder is keeping him until the end of October for us... I don't want to bring him home for a week and then put him in a kennel!

We went to the apartment complex and are on a waiting list for a Dog building apartment. Anytime within the next few months we should be able to get into one!

I have had both breeds. The corgi unfortunately, had to go to another home. She was constantly herding the doxies and DH and were always joking that they were plotting against her. However, I found corgis to be wonderful dogs and highly intelligent. Dachshunds come in three coat varieties. There are smooth, longhair and wirehair. Smooths do tend to be the snippy ones of the breed. Longhairs are generally known to be lovers of the breed and the wirehair are the clowns. Back problems can be an inherent problem in dachshunds. But, if you limit there jumping and watch their weight carefully many doxies do not have any problems with their backs. Dachshunds also can be found in different colors. There are black and tans, reds, dapple, brindles and piebalds. All of ours are of the longhair variety. With the exception of Isaiah. He is a longhair, but has the personality of a smooth. Dachshunds can be extremely stubborn dogs and suffer from convenient (sp?) hearing loss. If they see no reason do to something, they won't do it! So, I guess I would have to vote for a longhair dachsund. Wirehair do have some grooming that comes along with this variety. Their coats requiring stripping from time to time.

However do research on any purebred dog. Research the breeder before you buy from them. Ask them questions about their breeding program. Ask them how the puppies are raised. When we were breeding all of our puppies were kept with the family and not kept away from the rest of the household. Ask to see the pedigrees on both parents. This will insure that there is no inbreeding going on with their program. Most importanly ask them what kind of guarantee comes with the puppy.

We have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi who is six months old. We just got him about a month ago. He is WONDERFUL around our 6 and 10 year old and was never brought up around kids. He has the sweetest disposition, very playful and very loving to everyone in the family. He also does not smell and we live in Florida where in the heat you would expect him to. We do bathe him every two weeks with a deoderizing shampoo and we also brush him once a day. You dont need to brush them once a day but we do because he loves it.
