Any tips or suggestions for things to do (or not do) in Downtown Disney?

We are trying to go on the cheap...but some things I am planning to do (I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old, so the trip is centered around them) are:

the Lego store (and let them play with the legos and check out the lego statues)
Play in the splashpad area
Catch a movie at the AMC fork and screen theaters (where you sit down and they bring food to you)
$3 train rides and carousel rides

And, I recently learned that there is a Groupon for the Characters in Flight tethered hot air balloon ride. It will save you a good amount for this very unique experience. If you can, read about the company...

There is a store with Mr. Potato Heads. My 3.5 year old loved building them last year. We spent a while in there! We love the atmosphere of DTD. We browse in the stores. We usually do one souvenir at the end of the trip so they can get an idea about what they want. It also keeps them from asking for stuff along the way. DTD also has performances at times and if you are going at Christmas they have a Santa that you can visit.

I would be very cautious about getting the Groupons for the balloon ride. It 'does not' operate in winds, and it is possible to miss out on the ride your complete trip - depending on how many times you are willing to go to DTD to check.

Wait until you are there and 'then' check for a Groupon on your phone!
