I don't know about anyone else, but I really enjoyed this segment. I love DTD and a visit there is planned on every trip....mostly on our first day. I don't know what it is about it, but it really starts our vacations off very well, and we really enjoy doing some shopping and having dinner there. This year, I will introduce my girls to Earl of Sandwich (my new favorite). We rarely go anywhere other than The Marketplace as that has enough to keep us busy for the few hours that we are there.

Anyway, it was nice to hear Tommy talk about it and hear his thoughts.

Glad you enjoyed the segment. I'm hoping it goes over well in general. I have followed every development at DTD since the closing of PI, some things leave me scratching my head, others make me go THANK YOU, now GET THE REST RIGHT. What you indicated is exactly the problem though - MP is packed, the rest for many isn't worth the walk to get there.

Tommy,
I thought it was a great segment as well. I look forward to hearing from you in the future!
As a former CP myself, I was fondly remembering cast member night at PI as you talked about it. Too bad they let the island go completely. I hope it comes back to life.

I really enjoyed this segment too. One thing that I wanted to chime in on was the question posed about why the Boardwalk (specifically Atlantic Dance Hall) is so underutilized. I think it may have something to do with the fact that it is part of a resort hotel. It falls under the responsibility and control of a general manager who is most likely not interested in attracting a late-night rowdy dance club crowd. I was a professional intern in 2008 and my roommate was a Fairy-tale Weddings intern. She managed a lot of weddings at ADH, and I think that is the primary source of revenue of the facility.

yes, that's exactly it, they are there to service mainly the Swan/Dolphin, not the entire WDW resort. The other issue is if ADH is busy and people are leaving at bar time, they are loud on the Boardwalk and there are rooms RIGHT THERE so security has to try to hush people. Gosh if only there was a section of property with no hotel rooms in the immediate vicinity of dance clubs...

Excellent segment, Tommy. This is the kind of feature I enjoy on the podcast. You and the team showed a lot of knowledge of the history of DTD, and a lot of insight and philosophy, speculation and predictions of the future, and the like. I can only speak for myself, but WDW fans like us eat this stuff up, and love when people go beyond the typical "what's your favorite ride/attraction?" discussions and beyond the "it was cool" comments. Great job, can't wait to hear more of your stuff.

You're exactly right....we have walked through Westside and PI but we didn't find much of interest to us...ever since, we just stick to MP...it would be great if they could develop venues in those places to intice people to go there

Agreed! I was grateful for the update and input. I can distinctly remember being a teenager and listening to a band called Island Breezes perform live at PI sometime in the 90's - I was hooked on PI and hoped it never changed. I've kind of ignored Downtown Disney since they changed it (my own little protest). But I think those days are over. Excellent episode, thanks!!

I'm just catching up on the show after being away and was REALLY pleased that this segment was done. The demise of Pleasure Island and parts of DTD is something that I have always been upset about. Tommy, I remember our having conversations elsewhere on the DIS (and I think a few Save the AC/PI blogs??) about this for years now. I couldn't agree more with your perspective on the entire situation.

In my opinion, Pleasure Island was a unique experience for WDW guests without children. I would frequent it at least twice during my vacations and always enjoyed the atmosphere and offerings there. My favorite, of course, was the Adventurer's Club, but I also spent time at Comedy Warehouse and at some of the activities outside the club walls. It truly was the "Disney for adults" experience that really is absent from the World now-a-days.

Unfortunately, I feel that Disney truly destroyed Pleasure Island when they took the gates down. From what I remember, Lansberry claimed that it was due to low revenue, something that I still do not believe to this day. In doing so, the entire image and feel of PI changed. It was not uncommon to see families with strollers walking around PI at midnight or later while couples were on dates, friends were drinking, clubs were hopping, etc. I thought that this was highly inappropriate. Similarly, taking the gates down brought in some local traffic that did not add to the revenue and, instead, caused some safety concerns.

Since the closing of the clubs and Disney's attempt to revive the area, I have found it more and more aggravating to even venture over to the West Side or Island. The last time I did so, I had a bad taste left in my mouth after seeing structures of the old clubs still there, but desolate, some signage visible, etc. PI was a ghost town and the attempts to make it come alive again were/are truly sad. I also find it irritating when specific programming from clubs like Motion or 8-Traxx are played during the little dance parties now being held. Similarly, the release of PI/Adventurer's Club pins and Vinylmation figures is just another stab in the heart of PI fans everywhere.

If Disney has failed at anything, it was definitely what was done to PI and DTD. Although the Marketplace is consistently busy, the rest of DTD has so much potential. For years, PI enthusiasts have been watching development in the area, writing online articles, sending petitions (do you remember the online radio shows and phone calls to Lansberry's office?), etc. to have it returned to what it once was. However, I can't see Disney putting its "tail between its leg," so to speak, and doing so. The phrase overzealous pride comes to the forefront here. And, for what it's worth, I think that's a very sad testament to the mentality that led to the complete annihilation of an area loved by so many which now sits in the proverbial black hole of adult entertainment options abyss.

Agreed! Excellent segment. Really enjoyed Tommy's insight into the changes over the years. Thanks a bunch. Bring back The Adventurer's Club!!!

I loved the segment as well but I enjoy hearing people speak passionately about things they really enjoy but then I think that's why I love the podcast in general. :goodvibes

I was really bummed that they closed PI especially since I thought City Walk was my favorite part of my Universal visit and I felt Downtown Disney was too crowded and lacked...something..maybe it was PI that it was lacking? Although last time I went to DTD I think most of the clubs were still open but since it wasn't closed off I couldn't 'find it'. All I know is I visited City Walk and spent more time there than I did at DTD.

My Disney trips with my family back in the early 90s we would see commercials for PI and I told myself when I was 'grown up' I would go do PI, it seemed so cool! So sad future generations won't get to experience it ever again. :(

That's another aspect that really gets me. They used to advertise it HEAVILY on resort TV, the monorails, the list goes on. A lot of people were not old enough but wanted to go, but then when they reached the age required, either it was gone or they took away much of the atmosphere and it was only a shell of its former self.

In my opinion, they could turn the existing clubs into more of a destination club therefore reducing the need to club hop and thus preventing the problem of people drunk down the street with families. This wouldn't have worked when PI was open, but now that 2 clubs are demolished, I think they could allow traffic between CW, 8-trax, and MDP on the back walkway, close that off to guests, and there you have it. That solves the foot traffic problem. They really harped on the club hop idea when PI was open. That has to go away now, but doesn't mean something couldn't be done to encourage people to stay in basically one club all night. Of course, they don't ask me for my opinion :rotfl:

All I hope, at this point, is that SOMETHING is done to the place. We were promised a bold new vision of restaurants and shops. We have gotten NOTHING since the closure. Nothing that has opened has replaced any of the clubs. That's what irritates me the most.

But Tommy, that bold new vision was a giant balloon and dinosaur restaurant. :rolleyes2
