downtown disney car rental question

We plan on renting a car for the day to go to legoland. This same day we are checking out of GC Hotel and checking into DL hotel.

How far is the walk from GC to Downtown Disney car rental? Something doable with all of us carrying luggage? Or should I go by myself to get car and pick family up in lobby afterwards? Is it easy to find your way back to the hotel parking lot after leaving car rental place? Where are the rental cars? Does downtown disney have aparking lot?

Also, any advantage in checking in early in the morning after we get our car or should we just wait until we get back from legoland which could be around 9:00p.m. Will they give our room to someone else? We are staying DVC.

You could walk with your luggage or go get it by yourself. It is do-able. But if you have small kids and lots of luggage I would go by yourself. We walked by there yesterday and the Alamo in DTD had to Pontiacs out for rentals. You can get there 2 different ways. The first way, walk out the main entrance and cross the street to the parking lot and continue walking along the backside of the buildings of DTD and turn right when you come to the end were it shows the movie posters for the AMC. It is right around the corner on the right side. The second way is to enter DTD from the Grand Californian and take a left and go all the way to the end of DTD and take a left at the Compass Book store which is opposite of the ESPN Zone Restaurant. It will be on the left side next to the Walt Disney Travel Agency.

Depends where your room is in the GC, that can make a difference. I would say once you enter into DTD it is probably a five minute to seven minute walk. We used Alamo for our one day trip to Legoland too and it worked out great, however a light kept coming on in the car about the air pressure in the tires being too low. We called and let them know we stopped and checked them and they were all at the limit so we kept driving...

I think it's always best to check-in early to increase your chances of getting the room you want. It may also make your night a little smoother after coming back from SD.
