Downton Abbey

I have been hooked on this show since season 1 when it came on netflix and remember being ecstatic that there would be a season 2. With that said it I am starting to get why British show only go for a couple of seasons. (for the record US shows without a doubt should do the same. CSI anyone? lol)

Last night for me was rather boring. I kept thinking this is really how it probably was back then. Nights and days that dragged on. After the past 3 episodes I think the story line is starting to get an unrealistic soap opera feel to them. JMHO

The fact that this show airs months after BBC does not leave much in the way of hiding spoilers. We knew he was leaving when they were filming season 3. Why do actors always choose to leave shows at the height of their fame? Like they think here is my chance to still be noticed by hollywood? Does that usually work out for them? I am curious.

First of all I did not realize the show would open up being a YEAR later.

And then end with us losing Matthew. :sad1:

What a packed episode.

Sybbie, I love that they are calling her Sybbie. I am so glad they have the baby looking so much like Lady Sybil. :goodvibes

All in all I love the show. 2014 seems like such a long way off to have to wait until Season 4. :sad2:

In an interview, the creator said that the guy who plays Matthew wanted off the show and that he (the creator) asked him to consider at least making some token appearances in a couple of episodes. That way he could have shipped him off on business or something, but the actor flatly refused and wanted totally out. He didn't want to do any more at all. Had no choice, really, but to kill him off.

Well, Jessica Brown Findlay (Sybil) is getting some major movie roles, and Dan Stevens (Matthew) has three movies coming up. So I guess they are pretty busy. It doesn't always work out to leave a popular television show for a movie career, time will tell. I really thought Matthew was kind of flat this season anyway.

So now we've got an extra footman, and a niece. And I suppose Lady Mary will get a new suitor. Maybe they will do another skipped year or so before season 4. They were trying to make Rose more sympathetic in the season finale. Jimmy too, it seems.

I saw a little of the show last night. I liked it. I'd tune in again.

The funny thing is I thought it was DowntoWn Abby!:upsidedow

you know you are watching a good show when the episode goes by and you HATE the leading character and by the very end, you end up wanting to give her a huge hug. Mary was so condescending and snobbish the entire show, but by the end....POOR MARY!:sad1::sad:

I do feel bad for her circumstances now, but I haven't liked the character of Mary throughout the entire series. Occasionally I like Edith, but she has her faults. Of course they bump off the "sweetest spirit under this roof" Sybill -- the one sister I liked!

From what I've read, Lady Mary will have a new suitor as they've hired someone to play a Lord something. I think it would be interesting to see Mary and Tom get together, bonding through their grief and single parenthood. That's too American soap opera though ;).

Mary has never been my fav sister. Sybill was my fav, then Edith...love her gumption.

I kind of feel the same way about Thomas after last week's show. He is such a devious manipulator, but the actor made me feel bad for him and actually feel happy when he ended up as the under-butler at the end. And this week, coming to Jimmy's rescue, then talking to him and agreeing to be friends was nice.

I agree with you on that! I actually enjoyed watching Thomas in a relax state. He was actually smiling.

Oh, and he was very handsome in this suit and fedora hat. Wow.

I had read it before, so I knew it was coming, but still didn't want to believe it. Just so so sad.

I am really disappointed that PBS couldn't get this show to the US any sooner. On top of the long wait, they have aired 3 episodes in 2-hour formats. So our "season" was even shorter. If I understand it correctly, the season starts in the UK in September and the finale is on Christmas...so roughly 3 months??? Yet ours is barely 2 months, and we have to wait 11 more for the next season.

I'm not really complaining. I love this show. I just want more of it!

Season three actually lasted 7 weeks in the UK. One episode was aired every Sunday starting from mid September. The Christmas episode was a bonus and not actually, I believe, part of season 3. So there was a large gap between the end of season three and the Christmas episode. :)

I get you on how frustrating it is! I watch many American shows that take months to come on air in the UK after being shown in the US. And movies. Brave comes to mind. Despite the fact that the main cast were pretty much all British and it seemed to be a rather British movie, we had to wait months for it to air in the UK after it aired in the US. Bleh. :( ;)

I feel bad for the writer. Downton Abbey made Dan Stevens (Matthew) famous and then he just flaunts off and refuses to even make a few appearances in the show. That is gratitude lol. But I guess it has affected the whole brand because many people were bitterly disappointed in his death so soon after Sybil's.

I didn't really like Mary before - She was such an opportunist. But after she showed up at the train station with her little good luck charm - she totally won me over! After the proposal, I was totally on her side. I think she grew up quite a bit and I like how she's recently been fiercely loyal toward her family and giving everyone a fair shot. For example, encouraging Tom to invite the whole family to the christening, "give them a chance to do the right thing." And my favorite line from her - Tom says "My brother is a bit of a rough diamond" and she says to him "I'm very fond of diamonds."

The end of the season finale - when Matthew said he wanted to spend time with MY family - Just how they have been with each other since they got married - I loved Matthew and Mary's relationship, the love they had for each other. (ugh, I'm talking like they're real people!!!)

The one thing about Mary - I don't know why she's SO hard on Edith. She's such a B to her. If my sister said half the stuff to me that Mary says to Edith, I'd have told her to go to H-E-double-hockey-sticks.

I also like the relationship between Bates and Anna. They were so cute on their little picnic!

Why do actors always choose to leave shows at the height of their fame?
I think there are often a couple of common reasons:
1) They sign on to a new show for a more "average" wage and when the show becomes a hit and it's time to renew the contracts suddenly the actor finds they can command higher dollars elsewhere that their current show cannot, or will not, match.
2) They fear that if they stay in a popular role too long they can get "pigeonholed" in that role and it can hurt their chances of landing other roles once their hit franchise ends because everyone associates them with their old role whenever they appear on the screen. My guess is that we aren't likely to see people like Daniel Radcliffe land major roles in future films because whenever everyone sees him they think "Hey, it's Harry Potter!"

I just watched the show.:sad::sad::sad:
Before this season aired I heard that Matthew would die but I didn't want to believe it. I do spoilers for daytime soaps but when it comes to my prime time shows I don't want to know. I loved being surprised! I can't believe it. No more new shows till 2014!

I felt the same way, I was hoping it wouldn't happen. I really liked Matthew and was really upset last night.

Oh I know! I heard that Matthew would die, but I just brushed it off after Sybil died. But the moment I saw Matthew with that HUGE smile on his face speeding down that road, before I even saw the other car, I knew something bad was gonna happen. Honestly, babies are the kiss of death in Downton.

Just finished the Season 3 finale with DD - a day late and a dollar short!

We got all 3 seasons on DVD, and we've only been watching since Christmas. Here are my thoughts:

I do love the show. In general, I think the entire world and stories about Downton are fantastic, but I have a few bones to pick with Jullian Fellowes, the writer.

I think 2 major deaths in the same season was a bit much. I understand that the actors wanted to leave, but there must have been more creative ways to end a character than always having them kick the bucket. It just seems to be a bit lazy on the writer's part to use the same device twice, in such a short time.

Also, DD and I noted that he "borrows" themes and stories from other sources. For example, Ethyl's story sounds a lot like Fantine in Les Miserables, no? And Michael Gregson the newspaper editor/Edith's new boyfriend - I suppose he has read "Jane Eyre"? If the newspaper offices get burned down and he goes blind, I'll really be suspicious.

And a minor issue, but did he have to give the under-butler and the former chauffer such similar names - Thomas Barrow and Tom Branson? Completely different characters, but sometimes, in speech, we get them confused.

Now, as for Thomas, I am liking his story more and more. Yes, I did almost feel sorry for him when he was about to get fired without a reference, after being set up by that awful O'Brien. And bailing out drunk Jimmy at the fair only shows that he still loves him, even though he knows that love will never be reciprocated. The fact that he DOES love someone, other than himself, almost redeems his other badness - stealing the wine and locking poor Isis in the shed.

O'Brien, on the other hand, seems to have no discernable goodness. Zero. Other than being almost sorry for the soap incident - but that was only because she thought she would get in trouble, rather than any real remorse.

Not sure I like the new characters. It is getting hard to keep track of who likes who - I think Daisy likes Alfred, who likes Ivy, and Ivy likes Jimmy. Not sure who Jimmy likes, but we know it is not Thomas. But at least they are friends now - that was nice.

As for the "upstairs" folks, of course, I love Granny. Loved Mrs. Levinson (Shirley MacLaine) too, but I was sad she was only in the first two episodes. I was hoping we would see her again at Sybil's funeral.

I also thought that Mary would be nicer to poor Edith after Sybil's death, but that only lasted a short while. Maybe she will be a little softer around the edges, now that she is both a mother and a widow. Edith needs to find just ONE boyfriend that will actually work out.

The major beef I have with Lord Grantham's character was his "where-did-that-come-from" affair with the maid Jane. That came completely out of left field and made me wonder why Fellowes put that in. Also, I'd like him to be a bit more remorseful about both the affair and his loss of their money and almost losing the estate. With Matthew gone, I hope Tom will keep Lord Grantham from making more bad decisions - did you all catch that reference to "Charles Ponzi"? ;)

I used to like Cora, but she's getting a bit annoying - she always seems like she is talking to a kindergartener.

Anna and Bates seem almost boring now that all their dramatics are over. And a bit too lovey-dovey - I'd like to see their first fight!

And Carson - well, the scene with him holding baby Sybie was just too cute.

All in all, I still love the show and can't wait to see Season 4, but I do hope the writer stops with the cheap plot twists - Mrs. Hughes has cancer! No, she doesn't! - and comes up with more original story lines.

So I just watched and was loving the entire episode, until. The end:sad1:

I didn't know who was going to die, I just knew someone, so in the beginning I thought o'brien, then Thomas, then the drunk guy, then...... Oh Matthew. I can't see Mary getting on from this. Strange to have 2 babies with one parent on the show. I wonder how this will pan out.

So will Mary marry Tom now?
