Downsizing unit under 30 days, would excess points still go into holding?

I'm assuming they would but don't know for sure?

We're flying from the UK next week (departure tests pending... fingers crossed), we're due to come out with friends and have 14 nights in 2 x dedicated 2 beds at BCV and GFV.

Our dear friends have heartbreakingly had some very bad news, at this point we don't know if they'll be able to still come on the trip, hence I'm very guiltily thinking through our options.

I know it's pretty unlikely anyway that we'd find a 1 bed for the entire trip at this stage, but on the off chance that we did, would those points be salvageable or still be subject to holding as we're under the 30 days.

Any other advice very gratefully received, if they're not able to come along with us then it will just be DH and I so we don't need a 2bed and they've covered the dues for half of the points, so I'd also love to be able to save the points as we'll obviously refund them.

Feeling so incredibly heartbroken for them and also incredibly selfish for even thinking about points when they have so much more important things to worry about.

Thank you

Yes they would. However, it is worth a call to MS. They have been making some exceptions with holding.

Sorry to hear they may not come.

Thank you both, that's what I'd assumed but wasn't sure, tbh I think it's pretty unlikely that we'll even get a 1 bed at this notice without moving every few days, but you just never know so good to know where we stand.

We're meeting with our friends tomorrow so will have a better idea then and can speak to DVC afterwards if necessary.

I'm so sorry about your friends.

I hope you find something and that you're able to get the points fully back. It's not really that selfish to worry about yours and their travel, especially since you want to refund them. Sometimes someone has to do the day-to-day stuff when someone else is having troubles. When my mom died, my sister-in-law (who was grieving, too) was able to jump into action and get me across the country the next day. I wouldn't have been able to make those calls, and I'm glad she had the bandwidth.

Well I asked the question and no, nothing. There are no smaller units available for our 14 nights straight, she didn't ask about splitting across different resorts (whilst I'd be happy with a 7/7 split, I was surprised to not be asked if we'd be happy moving more often), just got told that there are no smaller units available and if there were the excess points would go into holding.

I'm a little fragile tonight anyway as it's was just more devastating news for our friends today and aggressive treatment will start the day after they should have flown out to meet us, but I had hoped for at least a 'I'm sorry to hear that, I'll see if there's anything I can do'.

Ah well, we didn't expect them to be able to help so have lost nothing, just disappointed that she didn't even appear to try.

One reason why they may not have even mentioned the split, is that they cannot hold what you have as they try and change and you could end up with nothing. It would be too risky.

Well I phoned up today and the lady I spoke to (Louise) was absolutely lovely, she really tried to find a solution for us, she said she'd have no problem taking excess points out of the system under the circumstances. Unfortunately as we knew, there are no smaller units.

She really restored by faith in MS.

 I understand that feeling. My mother passed away just prior to a trip we were all supposed to take to WDW. When I called in I wasn't expecting nor asking for any exceptions but of course was hoping something might be offered as it would have been one less thing to have to think about. As with you there wasn't even a sorry to hear that. What I did get as the call was ending was "Have a Magical Day". That in particular I will never forget.

I'm sorry your friends are dealing with what sound like some very serious issues and hope that treatments go well.
